SN to stop serving BCN on its own metal

Post by tolipanebas »

In order to optimize our capacity in Europe, SN Brussels Airlines is planning a few alterations to its network. A first step in this direction has been taken by reviewing the operations to and from Barcelona. As from the summer season (starting on 27th March), SN Brussels Airlines will continue to offer Barcelona to its customers by placing its code on the 3 daily flights operated by our codeshare partner Iberia only. This means the late afternoon rotation operated by SN will no longer operate.

The new schedule looks ike this (all flights operated by IB and in local time) :

SN5237 07.00 08.55 daily SN5272 09.00 11.05 daily
SN5271 13.05 15.00 daily SN5278 16.15 18.20 daily
SN5277 19.10 21.05 daily SN5268 20.15 22.20 daily

SN Brussels Airlines and Virgin Express are both continuing to review their leisure operations and more changes will be communicated.

It seems that the BCN service is going down. Two years ago, SN BA still had two flights to BCN with its own planes. A codeshare with IB means that you'll have to pay for your meals and drinks!

Finally the winners will be VEX and Vueling on this route. They give same service for same prices.

well it does make a lot of sense, doesn't it?

-) SN pulls a plane off this route for use on other more profitable routes (e.g. charters during the summer months).

-) The daily capacity on the BRU-BCN route is reduced, so the loadfactor and thus ultimately also the average ticket price can go up again, which is good news for SN too, since they still sell tickets to BCN through the code share flights on IB (and make money on every ticket sold)

-) They do their partner airline IB a favour by reducing the direct competition on the route.

-) They also do the same favour to VEX, which is fully owned by SN.

-) It is a step towards the integrated SN/VEX route structure, which is aimed at reducing direct competition (VEX giving up CPH, SN dropping BCN as destinations served with their own metal)

Expect some more reshuffles like this over the comming weeks.... leisure routes will predominantly go to VEX, business routes will go to SN.

Really, too bad!! I flew SN A319 to BCN last summer and VEX 737 on the way back, and loved the SNBA service, meals, seats,... . Would not fly Iberia for the same price but the same service as VEX (pay for meal and drinks)! (BTW, the flight on the A319 was full)

Let's compare prices (I don't care the departure or arrival time, I will take the lowest price)

Random date: 18 march until 21 march

Virgin Express: 118,37 EUR
Flight TV 814: 61,00 EUR + 32,93 EUR = 93,93 EUR
Flight TV 809: 7,00 EUR + 17,44 EUR = 24,44 EUR

Vueling: 129.33 EUR
Flight 1025: 63.00 EUR + 20.93 EUR = 83.93 EUR
Flight 1024: 40.00 EUR + 5.40 EUR = 45.4 EUR

SN: 139.00 EUR + 46.37 EUR (+10 EUR fee) = 195.37 EUR
SN5267: 70 EUR
SN5268: 70 EUR

IB: 267.00 EUR + 52.09 EUR = 319.09 EUR
(I hate this website)

I do not consider BCN as a tourist route. I go there for business and I deeply regret that SN abandons that route. I had excellent service on their A319 when it was still flying the route.

I'm not sure about that.
For the start of easter vacation,26the of March ,Iberia flights will be all full booked in economy class.
Virgin has still some 180 places left for the flights on that same date.
Iberia is doing quiet good on the BRU-BCN route.

This is terrible..
Can't believe we have to be up to the mercy of IB inflight service! If this is the case, I would certainly change to taking VEX or Veuling. I do understand that they are not getting that much business travellers on that route especially during afternoon flights.. but they should have discussed with IB to maybe serve the morning or evening flight. At least one flight from SN would be great.

Well, the reasons given from the posts are also logical. I would really miss SN if flying on this route. Maybe I should consider paying a bit more and waste some time now and take the train to Paris to catch AF.. at least at the same time I can earn and enjoy my benefit with SkyTeam. :P

Miss y'a SN in BCN!

To compare prices like this is not so good in my opinion. You should take the cheapest ticket possible with all four airlines.

A pity SN is leaving BCN. I cannot understand how they can do such a move and simply put their pax on IB flights where you have to pay for your food. Is that the way they are passionate about us ?

I can understand that an airline such as SN has "many" codeshares (although they have too much IMHO) but what I don't understand is how they choose their partners.

This might be off topic. But they claim to be passionate about us, by giving the pax a great service "free of charge" (well incl. in the ticket price...) but then you end up in planes of LX,IB....where you need to pay for your food and where the service is really poor compared to the SN service standard.
Is that the way of doing business ? Definitely not. If they continue like that they will certainly loose customers in my opinion.

Indeed Airbuske .
Don't forget last Summer Virgin used to have 6 daily flights between this city pair and now they cut down frequency with 50 % to 3 daily flights for this Summer.

I am hoping that Manchester and Birmingham are classed as business routes...

Pity the two airlines won't become just SN Brussels Airlines, then the 737s from Virgin Express could be used to inaugurate new routes which are out of the Avro's range.

Are you asking seriously? I would not even dream MAN and BHX as being tourist cities...

Oh dear Andre, you don't know England very well. Birmingham is very close to tourist hot spots such as Warwick and Stratford on Avon which get apcked out with foreign visitors in summer.

And Manchester is the nearest large airport to such areas as the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District, and also probably the Lake District, and even north Wales if you count Liverpool as a short haul airport.
