RwandAir already said few month ago that they won't add A330Neo leased from ALC. So i guess that Airbus has already a new customer.

The Netherlands have lifted their restrictions on travel to Rwanda for the Dutch. There were no restrictions for Rwandans traveling to the Netherlands since Rwanda is on the EU green list.

I have learned that before the Covid19, the Netherlands was the 3rd market (I think outside Africa) in terms of tourism for Rwanda. Logically behind the USA, the United Kingdom and therefore ahead of India and Belgium (the former colonial power with Germany)
KLM should be happy to be able to fill its A330s in Kigali more and more often with point-to-point traffic which should be on the rise, before covid19: mrgreen:

The only domestic rout Kigali-Kamembe is now operated on a daily basis: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/wb601

Rare, Ethiopian used a widebody aircraft on his night flight to Kigali (a 787 on May 29, 2021). Usually these flights are operated in Q400 or B737. widebody aircraft come to Kigali are on the daylight flight.

4 of the 10 largest companies in North America are doing code share on Kigali: Air Canada, Delta and United have just been joined by JetBlue (DOH-Kigali). Note that Delta has now put its DL code on the Nairobi-Kigali flight operated by Kenya Airways (connection on KQ's JFK-NBO flight) in addition to the code share with KLM on AMS-KGL.

LATAM has also just added its LA code on Doha-Kigali flights. Maybe LATAM estimated that the number of pax going to Kigali was interesting enough to put its code there. Iberia, and Royal Air Maroc have also code share agreements with Qatar Airways on the DOH-KGL, but they are missing.

But the record in number of code share to Kigali, it is Ethiopian: Air India, Egytpair, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines. Flightats did not show Turkish Airlines and RwandAir, but they do code share on Kigali-Addis.

The East African is a Journal which often has reliables sources.

Negotiations between Qatar Airways and RwandAir stalled on staff. Qatar Airways will send RwandAir staff to Doha to learn better skills. There will be RwandAir personnel who will be fired (less qualified personnel).

In terms of human resources, Qatar Airways would like to put it staff for it, but RwandAir is not very agree and would like to keep only its current staff.

The deal will be signed by the end of 2021.

Qatar, RwandAir deadlocked on staffing but deal is still on

The acquisition deal between Qatar Airways and Rwanda's national carrier RwandAir is still on, with those aware of the latest plans saying internal re-organization is going on at the national airline to accommodate Qatar Airways to reflect the new partnership in operations by end of this year .

Rare to see Turkish Airlines during the daylight at Kigali, but big delay (more than 6 hours) on 3Jun21. This flight was supposed to be operated by a B737, but it was operated by an A330-300. Only the flight overnight from Saturday to Sunday is currently operated by A330-300. Thansk again to Carlin, for the pix

Finally, the 2020 Rwanda Statistical YearBook but before covid with sometimes old stats. https://www.statistics.gov.rw/publicati ... rbook-2020

However i wanted to share them.

2019:

Kamembe Airport: 20 559 pax
Kigali Airport: 1 124 908 pax (853 894 + 291 274)

Total Rwanda: 1 145 867 pax

From 2015 to 2019, Air trafic passengers has almost been multiplied by 2, in Rwanda. However many people coming in Rwanda still arriving by land and not by plane. Rwanda is a transit country for many people either by Air or Land. Many Travel Agencies sell tours in East Africa including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.

Arrival by Continents. Main purposes for Rwanda are VFR, Business/Conference/Official and transit ((2017). It seems that Rwanda is probably a high yield destination with not very big flux .

Africa:

1 397 019 people (almost 1 000 000 make "long" stay in Rwanda, but how many Africans can afford to fly ? 5% ? 10% . The potential is very very huge). If i remmeber DR Congo is the biggest market for Rwanda. Then Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania and Uganda. I heard also Nigeria

Europe:

75 297 people. UK, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany are normally argest markets for Rwanda

America:

46 756 people. USA and Canada leading

Asia:

46 418. India, China, Japan and Australia are normally largest markets for Rwanda. There are also more and more South Koreans, they work mostly for Koreans NGOs

South Asia: 27 478 people East Asia: 15 868 people Middle East: 3 072 people

RwandAir doesn't serve New York

RwandAir Dream miles and Qatar Airways Privilege Club launch loyalty partnership

RwandAir has become the first - and only - Sub-Saharan African airline to launch a loyalty partnership with Qatar Airways.

The two carriers have joined forces to offer RwandAir Dream Miles and Qatar Airways Privilege Club loyalty members access to each other’s destinations with the opportunity to ‘earn and burn’ points across their reciprocal route networks.

Under the new deal, RwandAir Dream Miles members will be able to fly to more than 140 Qatar Airways destinations using miles earned by flights bought through RwandAir.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club members will have the ability to earn miles on RwandAir’s flights, both within Africa and on long-haul routes, to destinations such as New York and London.

Does the press release come from RwandAir or from Qatar? In the first case, it's surprising that the airline doesn't know its own destinations.

Some stats (before covid19), mainly 2019.

Brussels-Kigali:

2019: 93,557 pax (Brussels Airlines: 5-6 flights per week tag with Entebbe + RwandAir 3-4 flights per week tag with London Gatwick. SN and WB is A330-200 / 300)

Amsterdam-Kigali:

2019: 65,781 pax (daily KLM via Entebbe, in A330-200 / 300)

Dubai-Kigali:

2018: 42,000 pax (daily in B737-800 or A330-200 / 300) https://www.newtimes.co.rw/news/rwandai ... e-dubai-17

Mumbai-Kigali :

2019: 29,384 pax (RwandAir 4 flights per week in B737-800 until June 18, 2019. Then then 3 flights per week in A330-200 / 300):

Jan-Mar: 2836 + 3806
Apr-Jun: 4122 + 5738
July-Sept: 2661 + 3115
Oct-Dec: 3682 + 3424

For India the figures on the left are traffic to India and the figures on the right are traffic from India: https://www.dgca.gov.in/digigov-portal/ ... ervicename

London Gatwick-Kigali:

2019: 28,504 pax (RwandAir 3-4 flights per week in A330-200 / 300). Flights on Heathrow now

In my opinion on Europe (London and Brussels), RwandAir should be around 45,000 pax in 2019

Routesonline said that O&D traffic between Heathrow Kigali was 23,240 pax in 2019 (+ 7.7% vs 2018). It's certainly not huge, but I thought this number smaller. https://www.routesonline.com/news/29/br ... k-lax-cun/

Mumbai-Guangzhou:

2019: 14,026 pax ( RwandAir 3 flights per week in A330-200 / 300)

Apr-Jun: 543 + 458 (1st BOM-CAN flight on June 18, 2019)
July-Sept: 3234 + 2556
Oct-Dec: 3399 + 3236

A report from a Rwandan website about pax traveling on flights between Brussels and Kigali, operated by RwandAir.

Loads seem to be good (even if this is not a guarantee of profitability and that even before covid the RwandAir was not profitable).

Ayway what is interesting is that currently the most popular destinations from Brussels with RwandAir are:

Kigali (Rwanda), then Kinshasa (DR Congo), Bujumbura (Burundi). The 3 former Belgium colonies. More surprisingly, Bangui (Central African Republic) and Accra (Ghana).

Some Rwandans arrive from some cities in Europe pass through Brussels to travel with RwandAir. Others have decided to fly with RwandAir since the airline serves London Heathrow with the possibility of making connections with flights to the USA and Canada.

RwandAir and Qatar Airways join forces to give customers greater choice over combined networks

Partnership will leverage Qatar Airways’ global network and increase access to African destinations and integrate respective loyalty programmes’ benefits.

KIGALI, 2 August, 2021 – RwandAir customers will be able to explore even more of the world following its new partnership with Qatar Airways via their hubs at Kigali and Doha.

As part of the strategic partnership, the extensive interline agreement will give customers access to the networks of both airlines, providing a seamless travel experience and enhanced customer service the frequent flyers programmes.

Customers can pick and choose from over 160 destinations in the combined networks of both airlines, which are perfectly connected via their home main hubs.

https://www.rwandair.com/media-center/n ... -networks/
[...]

With more frequencies being added to key hubs, Qatar Airways offers unrivaled connectivity to passengers, making it easy for them to change their travel dates or destination if required.

Qatar Airways serves Kigali from Doha five times per week via Entebbe, utilizing its sustainable and fuel efficient Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. The airline's customers can transit via Kigali to a diverse range of African destinations including Bujumbura, Brazzaville and Libreville.
I do not know if they mean that RwandAir will launch flights to Doha, in addition to those of Qatar Airways. There are also Douala, Kinshasa, Bangui Cotonou which will also be available via Kigali

Rwanda press announces that RwandAir will start to serve Lumbubashi and Goma, from 15 Sept2021. It will be two new destinations for Qatar Airways passengers flying through Kigali: https://www.facebook.com/TheNewTimesRwa ... 7585406629 & https://www.facebook.com/TheNewTimesRwa ... 8765362511

Competition from East African Airlines will be stiff in DR Congo.

Kinshasa: Uganda Airlines, RwandAir, Ethiopian and Kenya Airways
Goma (located few km from Rwandan boarder, near my birthplace :D ): Ethiopian Airlines, soon JamboJet (Kenya Aiways Low Cost), RwandAir
Lubumbashi: Ethiopian, RwandAir and Kenya Airways

I think they will serve Goma because, the airport at Gisenyi (Rwanda) is too small to handle the Q400 (even with former RwandAir Dash 200 it was alittle bit hard), and probbaly the project to expand the airport take too long time, while at Goma they can use B737s, CRJs (if demand is high) and Q400.

But RwandAir has a small advantage with proabably an important point to point market between Kigali and DR Congo. DR Congo is the biggest market for Rwanda, although many use Kigali as a transit place and many come from Goma by bus. There are also lots of Rwandans living in DR Congo

Flights to Lubumbashi and Goma will be operated without a tag serrvice. With Lagos, Johannesburg, Kinshasa (the night flight), Kamembe, Dubai, Bujumbura and Mumbai these are the only routes that are sometimes or still see operated without tag service.

Small stopover of a few hours at FBM, for a return at 19:00 to Kigali to catch connecting to Nairobi, Johannesburg, Lusaka, Entebbe, Brussels, Dubai, London, Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam, Mumbai and even..Kinshasa (night flight), Ethiopian Airlines makes the tag service via Lilongwe (Malawi) and Kenya Airways via Ndola (Zambia) which also saves them a stopover of several hours at FBM.

Note that on Mondays and Wednesdays there are also flights to Kinshasa, which leaves at 10:50 am.

Malaysia Airlines (you can see Kigali on the booking engine: https://www.malaysiaairlines.com/us/en.html) and Oman Air ((https://www.omanair.com/fr/en/alliances-and-partners) have began code share service to Kigali on the Doha-Kigali operated by Qatar Airways.

Even if i m not a fan that RwandAir serves London, i wonder if with the comming huge partnership with QR, RwandAir will become an member affiliates of Oneworld (not a full member). If it's the case at London they would have agreements with Finnair, Iberia, British Airways, and American Airlines for connecting flights. In 2018, RwandAir got approval from approval from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to put its WB code flights to USA via Code Share. https://www.theeastafrican.co.ke/tea/bu ... es-1395526

Star Alliance (Ethiopian, TAP Air Portugal, United, Egyptair, Brussels Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa and Eurowings) and Skyteam (KLM, Delta, Kenya Airways and Air France) have a bigger presence in East, Central and Southern African than Oneworld (BA in EA and SA QR in EA and SA and RAM for Central Africa)

About Oman Air, they have interline agreements since many years with RwandAir and they were planned to serve Kigali, but it was before covid19

Kigali now appears on the Finnair, American and Cathay Pacific websites. Surely soon code share via Qatar Airways or agreements with RwandAir following the QR / RwandAir paternship ?

RwandAir was voted best cabin crew in Africa by SkyTrax in 2020. And one of the companies that has improved the most. I know SkyTrax is no longer popular among the avgeeks, but an award is an award. A big thank you to Turkish Airlines forf the training of RwandAir cabin crew. It is clear that the arrival of Qatar Airways will boost all this. Hoping that the company will someday make a profit ...

I think it's 56 and not 46. Tomorrow (04 Oct), flight operated in B737-800. With the A330-200 which will be deployed to Kinshasa (in addition to the night flight in B737-700), with continuation to Lagos. Same for 11Oct21.

The maiden flight was serviced by the carrier’s Boeing 737-700NG which landed at Lubumbashi International Airport at a few minutes past noon.

On board were 63 passengers, seven in the business class and 46 in the economy. https://www.newtimes.co.rw/news/busines ... e-rwandair

-------------------------------------------------- ----------

Some stats on the covid period. A first for me, monthly stats for Kigali airport. The stats stop in June 2020. Between March 2020 and June2020, there were no scheduled flights. Only repatriation flights operated by Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Air Cote d'Ivoire, RwandAir (China, India and Europe) Air Cairo or Amzan Airlines (Nigeria).

August 2019 is surely the record over one month for Kigali airport with 128,000 pax, which is almost the equivalent of traffic for the whole of 2002 !!

(Interview of 2002 of the director of the Rwandan civil aviation) Can you describe with a few figures the importance of the airport activity in terms of traffic, number of passengers per annum, aircraft movements?

We have 285 employees, a number of passengers of approximately 130,000. In terms of aircraft movements, we have around 11,000 per annum. Cargo ships are close to 5,000 tons. http://www.winne.com/rwanda/to00interview.html

-------------------------------------------------

Traffic projection for RwandAir for fiscal year 2021-2022: 479,138 pax.

For the 2019-2020 fiscal period, RwandAir transported 856,167 pax. There is a shortfall of more than 300,000 pax, despite RwandAir has operated few repatriation flights, from March 2020 to August 2020. And from August 2020 capacities were low.

For the 2020-2021 fiscal year, we should be very low.

About $$$ no infos, but i think they are not good We will have to wait for the Imihigo report (performance contract), to have all this data

After a long period of storage (a time stored in Zimbabwe then in Rwanda) one of RwandAir's B737-700 9XR-WJs carried out a test flight a week ago. The plane back to the service today: Kigali-Douala-Bangui. This aircraft has been leased to ILFC since 2013 (delivered new to Air Berlin in 2007)

An article on Qatar Airways' Africa strategy published by Jeune Afrique in October 2020 is now open access. I put the part that talks about RwandAir.

Basically RwandAir can theoretically fly between Doha and Kigali, replacing QR, it will depend on the business plan.

https://translate.google.com/translate? ... n-afrique/

RwandAir will start Kigali Doha service from December 2021. If QR stays on the route, they will be up 2 flights a day between Doha and Kigali.

4th destinations in Asia for RwandAir: Doha, Mumbai, Dubai and Guangzhou. 5th if we add Tel Aviv which is still suspended

If i understand well, RwandAir will add its WB code on some destinations served by Qatar Airways and And probaly Qatar Airwas will add its QR code to some RwandAir destinations. Will it be include ?

Operated by QR: Madrid ? Zürich ? Londres ? Los Angeles ? Dallas ? Washington ? New York ? Kuala Lumpur ? Bangkok ? Singapour ?

Musca

Operated by WB: Kinshasa ? Lubumbashi ? Bujumbura ? Note that Cotonou, Douala, Brazzaville, Kamembe Bangui and Libreville are served by WB but not served by QR. Lusaka, Harare, Cape Town, Nairobi, Entebbe, Lagos, Accra, Abuja, Dar Es Salaam, Kilimanjaro and Johannesburg are both served by RwandAir and Qatar Airways.

These destinations are listed on the article, below.

Or the code share agreement will be only the Kigali Doha operated by QR (with WB code) and Kigali Doha operated by WB (with QR code)

RwandAir and Qatar Airways seal milestone codeshare agreement

Customers of both airlines will benefit from convenient access to more than 65 global codeshare destinations
RwandAir’s new Kigali – Doha non-stop flights from December will provide a seamless travel experience connecting Africa to the world

RwandAir and Qatar Airways have signed a comprehensive codeshare agreement to offer travelers more choice, enhanced service, and greater connectivity to more than 65 destinations across Africa and the rest of the world.

As part of the deal, the Rwandan flag carrier will also launch new non-stop flights between their Kigali hub and Doha in December.

The agreement benefits travelers from across the globe who fly with both airlines, which expands each carrier’s route network.
