On 29 June, British Airways flight #BA247 (Boeing 777-300ER reg. G-STBL) made an emergency landing 8 hours (!) after taking off from London Heathrow to Sao Paulo. The U-turn occurred off the South Moroccan coast.

OO-SSN operating BRU-MXP as SN3215 seems to have had a problem just after take-off this morning.
Very unusual engine sound when passing overhead.

OO-SSN RTB 20210708.png

Went around maintaining about 2300ft for an immediate return.

Landed back 12 minutes later on RWY25R. Vacated the RWY with Fire 022 in support.

Not that it makes a lot of difference, but the maintained altitude on downwind was 3000ft AMSL and later on 2000ft AMSL for the intercept according to FR24 pressure altitude data.

It looks like OO-SSV will take over. With a delay of 2 hr 30 min.

Thanks for the info.

That engine noise was really unusual which drew my attention. Now I know why. Must have been the bird yelling.
Congrats to the flight crew to have handled the situation without ending in the Hudson.

That would be a record flight for the A320 :D
But indeed, congrats to the flight crew.

A first for this 2021 topic, but bizjets also have their share of trouble: a FLYINGGROUP Falcon 8X returning to EBAW/ANR with a technical issue.

Did you mean diverted/returned to Porto due weather at destination? It would quite difficult to return to OPO without fuel...

Bad weather at destination and insufficient fuel to wait for improvement. Sorry if my sentence lacked clarity.

TUIFly's TB1101 ANR->ALC returned to ANR after half an hour into the flight. Fire brigade on standby as a precaution as no assistance was required, but aircraft was relatively heavy (full pax load) for the short runway. The flight was resumed within the hour.

Heavy fog currently over Addis Ababa, some planes are diverted to Nairobi.

https://www.flightradar24.com/airport/add

It's like thaht planes which are a few minutes to land at CDG which cannot go to Paris are diverted to ... Madrid or Rome, while London, Brussels and Luxembourg are not far away.

But 1500km in Africa, it's like 200-300km in Europe: mrgreen:
