Brussels Airlines flight #SN379 to Douala (Airbus A330-300 reg. OO-SFF) made a U-turn in the neighbourhood of Metz and came back at low altitude to Brussels Airport where it landed without holding, which seems to indicate an urgent technical problem.

Or an urgent medical problem.
When you don't know, why don't use your usual "reason unknown"?

SN203 to DSS-BJL got cancelled today.
OO-SFC was to run but got swapped in the early morning by Golf, then one hour later by X-ray, and at 10h00LT by Delta.
New gate on B Pier which is never a good sign.

Flight cancelled at 10:50LT and replaced by SN1203 directly to BJL, stopping at DSS on the way back to BRU.
OO-SFD left as SN1203 at 15:33LT.

It was actually a technical problem. For a medical issue, the aircraft would probably not have descended to a low altitude (6000ft).

There were 235 passengers on board, for both Douala and Yaounde. Alternative flights have been proposed.

Why would the “no holding” imply an urgent technical problem?
An aircraft with a real urgent technical problem overhead Thionville probably wouldn’t return to Brussels and certainly wouldn’t come back at low altitude!

Hi

Anyone knows why the SN flight to Kigali is canceled today, while the OO-SFE (that was planned to fly to Kigali) will fly to Douala / Yaounde today (flight delayed) ?

https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/oo-sfe

Thanks

No idea. But one element that could have triggered the decision is that SN379 to Douala and Yaoundé was cancelled on 31 July; with 265 passengers to rebook.

@EBAW at 23LT + a few seconds, a biz jet arriving from the UK, was instructed by ATC to go around, as the airport was officially closed at 23LT.

The Falcon 8X was over the approach lights at less than 150ft, when the go-around was initiated. And doing so, effectively creating the noise associated with a departure, after 23LT

Strictly applying the rules! "Dura lex, sed lex".

A little flexibility for a few seconds would have been way more intelligent and would have done a lot for the good reputation of the airport.

Aha, you think?

Airport closed = no landing/take-off.
I completely understand why the ATC *had* to do this.

Some airports with closure times have possibilities to extend the opening hours by a couple of minutes. I guess it's not the case at ANR?

On August 12th, an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787-9 flying from Brussels to Manchester experienced an engine fire warning on the descent towards its destination.

Any idea what what incident caused the diversion of LX-NCL (Cargolux retro livery) tonight ?

It looks like an emergency happened shortly after takeoff on a LUX - VCP flight, the crew went on holding above the sea near Ostend (maybe dumping excess fuel(?) ) and performed a landing at LGG.

A spokesperson for Ryanair explained the diversion was made due to a medical emergency and said: "This flight from Dublin to Brussels (27 Aug) diverted to Stansted after a passenger became ill on board.

"The crew called ahead to request medical assistance upon arrival, the aircraft landed normally and the passenger disembarked and was met by medics for further treatment.

"The aircraft departed for Brussels a short time later. Ryanair apologises to all customers for this short delay

Air Belgium 132 ATL-LGG on Aug 28 diverted JFK after holding several minutes above ACY. Diversion to JFK is certainly not coincidental to the airport having the largest inventory of A330 spares on the East Coast save ATL.

Thanks for reporting, longwings. Here is the track of this flight, operated by OO-AIR. The aeroplane is still in JFK at the time of writing.

EDIT: The Aviation Herald reports that "the crew requested to divert to JFK advising ATC they had lost one of their hydraulic systems with two still remaining. The crew requested to hold to burn off fuel and subsequently landed on JFK's runway 04R about 2:10 hours after requesting to divert and leaving FL350."
