Swissport Belgium nv/sa bankruptcy

Post by Passenger »

Passenger wrote: 08 Jun 2020, 10:02 Both Luk De Wilde (senior aviation journalist) and Frederik Ureel (Belga) report on Twitter that Swissport Belgium nv/sa has filed for bankruptcy.
.
Brussels, 08th June 2020. This morning, the management of Swissport Belgium (Swissport Belgium SA/NV and Swissport Belgium Cleaning SA/NV) filed for bankruptcy, the ground handler said in a statement. Next to Aviapartner, both companies are handling nearly all ground activities at Brussels Airport. Note that Swissport Cargo Services Belgium, a separate entity, has not been affected by the bankruptcy and will continue its activities at the airports of Brussels and Liege.

This decision will possibly have an impact on the 1,309 employees of Swissport Belgium NV and the 160 employees of Swissport Belgium Cleaning NV. In total, 1,469 jobs are involved.

“We have assessed the situation from an operational and financial point of view and considered all scenarios in order to examine whether ensuring a sustainable future for ground handling and cleaning services was possible,” said Thierry Miremont, CEO of Swissport in Belgium. “Unfortunately, we could not meet our financial obligations in this particularly difficult period for the aviation industry. We regret the impact this bankruptcy has on our employees, customers and the Belgian aviation community.”

The financial situation of Swissport Belgium became particularly difficult after its main customer Brussels Airlines stopped flying on 21 March. The handler indeed carries out all the ground services for the passenger flights of the airline and only a few activities related to freight keep the company busy.

Swissport Belgium was in terrible shape long before the corona crisis.

Airlines lowering costs all over the place, at the expense of employees. Working harder, less wage, more flexibility etc ...

There should be a drastic change in how things work with a minimum price of airline tickets and handling fees.

€9 for a flight no more!

It remains to be seen how the collapse of the GH working for quite the most major airlines at the airport will affect the re-launch of pax flights out of BRU...

Hi,

A plane is never filled with only 9 euro tickets..
These are promo's which every firm tries to get attention.
They are there yes but try to find one to your destination and date at choice, so stop wining about those fares...

But yes there is a strong need for a fair job, fair taxes , fair playing field etc.. ( for whole Europe ! )

And with these (!) fair rules a fair ticket fare will follow naturally....
Do we can see still 10 euro flights but with happy customers and hopefully happier employees :)

Or do we get basic prices for coke, water, electricity also.. ???

You want communism ( 😂 ) !

Let's hope there will be a takeover as soon as possible (I've heard some speculations about dnata) and that they'll preserve as much jobs as possible...

Sure, let’s hire those workers at less pay, work harder and already less favorable conditions than at Swissport. Everybody happy.

Hi,

Austria communist maybe not but for sure populism ...

If they think a minimum fare will exclude the real problems.. sorry .. not a chance...

But at least some dumb green ecologist are happy ...

But this won't save jobs, won't bring better work conditions...

But now the government don't have to deal with the real problems, Austrian is saved and some voters Will be happy...

Well done !

Laudomation left the building already so nothing left for that fares anyway 😂

Please be smarter here...
Save jobs, make fair rules ...

Anyway who will win what with this rule ?
10 euro or 40 euro for a flight... , Really ..???

Want to pay a real fair fare.. ? 150-200 at least..
But then these planes won't be full anyway..
So WHO ARE YOU fooling with this rule...

Well time will tell...

BRU should launch a bidding process between 6 to 12 months from now. Meanwhile, Aviapartner has a wide road ahead and can double prices for newcomers if they want (as long as they abide by existing contracts).

Hi, no this cannot be bcs of the current license.

There should be now found a solution for the effected clients. Cargo is not hit, so there they stay with 3 handlers.

Dnata could now try to have a license for pax handling. Aviapartner could try to extend the current one or a whole new one, Menzies, could send an offer too. Menzies tried already before.

Or there could come a whole new concept like in the past. SABENA handling did cleaning, waste water, baggage also for a lot of other carriers. But if there will be now the money for it is the question.

Or, but this is also not for this hard time, a Brussels Airport Handling. Then you keep everything in the own house. But this is hardly impossible bcs of competition. You cannot be objective then. And BRU is also making this year a huge loss, so each euro counts now

As far as I know, there is no limit on how much % of flights a handler can handle. So why would that be impossible?
As Swissport is defunct all handling agreements have been ended also. As there is now only one handler allowed on tarmac airlines will not have much choice but to contact AP for the time being. I can however imagine they will not tender for a normal (long) period as prices could end up higher than when there is some competition.

Or could you enlighten us with the specifics in the licence that limit their share of flights handled?

I cannot give you specifics regarding licence bcs that's confidential info.

There will be now a period, normally till the end of the year, regarding the procedure for a second handler.

So, for the next coming months a solution has to be found

Thanks !
Handling agent is free to negotiate prices with airlines.

They of course negotiate different fees per client. A client who is only flying 1 time per day towards an other who is flying 260 flights a day, is completely different.
The type of aircraft they are using and the number of people they need to handle that client. And of course the client itself also negotiate discounts for the volume they bring.

Can't this procedure for a second handler be speed up? I mean: this situation is super urgent. We can't wait 6 months for a second handler, can we?
