An-225 news

Post by Vic Diesel »

The "Giant", An-225 Mriya took to the air again today for what appeared to be a test flight. After being on the ground for quite a long period of time, the giant took off from GML (Kyiv-Gostomel) to fly a "round trip" in Ukrainian airspace.

Speculations already flying about the reason for the flight, one reason could be rising need for cargo aircraft: after more and more airlines being grounded as the Covid-19 virus spreads around the world, less belly cargo space is available. Subsequently, there is a growing need for air cargo capacity via dedicated air freighters. Being by far the biggest cargo aircraft, the An-225 can carry as much as 345t of cargo - and this crisis might as well be its opportunity to see some regular "action" again. But then again, this is just speculation - the upcoming days and weeks will show if it returns to more-or-less regular service.
Best regards,
Viktor

And because there is lots of room inside the beast, maybe also some "spare parts" from a nearby company in Steyr?
Reminds me of some similar loads at Herstal West, err Bierset, a long time ago

There are unfortunately more important losses in Ukraine at the moment but the loss of the unique An-225 will be long remembered.

I remember seeing her in Iran some 10 years back. An incredible sight.

the mother of all tow bars. Carried on board of course but it can hardly affect the carrying capacity of the beast.

We sometimes refer to the A388 as the "pregnant skateboard" when seen from close by on the ground, but then what would you call this?

I will not forget what you did Vlad. And don't touch that button !
