Hi,
Just landed on SN255 from Bru to Ouagadougou.
1. The plane kept flaps 1 - is this so air can circulate better around the wing for cooling?
2. On take off to Ivory Coast, it literally backtracked and reversed at the end of the runway, and waited at least 15 minutes or so. Other airplanes and a helicopter landed the opposite direction during that time.
3. Once airborne, it didn't retract gears for a long while. Again, is that to cool the wheels or something?

1. That is to avoid detection of overheating around the bleed air ducts in the wings.
2. Probably just traffic as you described
3. One of the most common reasons is a deactivated brake, the gear is kept down till the wheel stops spinning.

Brake, not break.
Because, for whatever reason, it can't be used. Having one brake inoperable is not that big a deal. It's taken into account for the performance numbers, but that's about it.

So you mean they would've let the wheel spin until the pilots think it's stopped and then retract it?

While that’s basically they way they handle it, the duration is not up to the pilots, but is prescribed in the relevant manual.
