British Airways resumes flights to Brussels, which were halted in March 2020 except for a short period in October/November. Only once daily for the moment.

Qantas is likely to fly to several new overseas destinations in 2022 after pushing ahead with plans to resume international flights from December 2021.

Portugal does not expect to give TAP a different treatment from that given to other airlines, but wants to reduce the loss of slots as much as possible.

Eurowings aims to return its fleet in 2022 to pre-crisis levels with around 115 aircraft, up from the current 81 aircraft. The carrier will return to the wet-lease market next year as well.

Lufthansa chief executive Carsten Spohr believes that consolidation in the airline industry will continue in the long term as the sector exits the turmoil of the crisis.

Air Montenegro will temporarily suspend its flights between Podgorica and Frankfurt on 13 September and will resume flights on 01 December 2021, due to travel restrictions.

EuroAtlantic Airways will also challenge the State’s support for TAP Air Portugal, which is currently being investigated by the EU.

Air France has postponed until early December 2021 the inauguration of its new link between Paris and Maputo via Johannesburg with Boeing 777-300ER, due to travel restrictions.

Qantas and Japan Airlines were denied authorisation by the ACCC to coordinate flights between Australia and Japan under the terms of a joint business agreement. The ACCC found that the agreement would likely lead to reduced competition.

US Biden administration is making US$482 million available to aviation industry manufacturers to help them avert jobs or pay cuts in the pandemic.

Air Canada plans to restart Sydney – Vancouver flights from 17 December 2021, as both Australia and Canada reopen their international borders.

Airbus believes the aviation industry will not return to pre-pandemic levels until 2023-2025, but said it has a backlog of almost 500 orders of its new A220.

Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O’Leary has warned that summer breaks are set to become ‘dramatically’ more expensive thanks in part to the pandemic.

Spain’s government recently indicated that it will not give details about the rescue of Plus Ultra, because the files processed by the Solvency Fund are subject to summary secrecy and legal conditions.

Qantas confirmed the first flights from Sydney and Melbourne to London will depart on 18 December 2021, followed by Los Angeles, Vancouver, Singapore, Tokyo, Fiji, and Honolulu in the days after.

Cuba announced that the island will reopen its international borders on 15 November 2021.

Air Transat is resuming operations to Manchester on 19 October 2021, earlier than originally planned in anticipation of significant passenger demand for the UK.

Eurowings Discover is postponing the start of its US routes until summer 2022 due to “ongoing US entry restrictions”.

Scope Ratings says signs of possible further consolidation in Europe’s airline sector are a reminder of how difficult the recovery from the Covid-19 shock will be for the still fragmented industry, particularly compared with the US.

US DOT finds that extension of the temporary blanket relief from current conditions is in the public interest, and will continue to afford air carriers flexibility to begin or resume their international services as market conditions warrant, without risk that they will lose their route or frequency awards for nonuse.

Regulators in Asian hubs like Singapore and Hong Kong have threatened to retaliate against EU plans to force airlines to start using take-off and landing slots frozen during the pandemic, a move that could oblige Europe’s carriers to fly empty seats for thousands of miles at a loss.

FAA will continue to waive slot-use requirements for international operations at seven US airports through 26 March 2022. The airports include New York Kennedy, New York LaGuardia, Washington Reagan, Newark, Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Australia to allocate an additional US$133.6 million to maintain Australia’s international aviation capacity, as borders are expected to open by the end of 2021.

India’s government said airlines could now operate a maximum of 85% of their pre-2020 domestic flights instead of the 72.5% allowed to date.

Aer Lingus ground crew have rejected proposed structural changes put forward by the company amid ongoing pressure due to the pandemic.

IAG is not planning to raise billions of euros from shareholders (like Lufthansa) to get the company through the extended crisis, says chief executive Luis Gallego. The company was talking through “different options” with banks.

Luxair agreed with the government for “a temporary labour loan” in order to avoid layoffs, which will see 69 employees pass under the government dome.

Chile has reopened its borders to visitors on 21 September 2021 in a bid to revive its ailing tourism industry ahead of the Southern Hemisphere summer 2021.

British Airways to resume flights from Austin to London Heathrow on 13 October 2021, after 17-month hiatus.

El Al has requested US$100 million in compensation from the government for its strict COVID-19 travel policies and asked the prime minister to help end a stalemate in bailout talks. El Al, Arkia and Israir demanded that the Israeli government provide them with financial and regulatory support, warning that otherwise, they could collapse due to the pandemic’s effect on the travel industry.

LOT Polish Airlines has decided not to take delivery of the two B787s parked in the Mojave Desert, as long-haul has yet to recover the airline.

AirAsia Indonesia to resume scheduled flights on 02 October 2021, flying from Jakarta to Bali and Kuala Lumpur.

Qatar Airways will resume flights with A380s earlier than planned to make up for capacity lost in the regulatory grounding of some of its A350s.

El Al Israel Airlines gets pushback from the state on its request for US$100 million in additional state support due to “damages caused to it due to traffic restrictions”.

IATA predicted that net losses at airlines would narrow to US$11.6 billion in 2022 from $51.8 billion in 2021. The losses for 2021 were revised up from $47.7 billion estimated in April. IATA also revised up losses for 2020 to $137.7 billion from $126.4 billion estimated earlier.

Ryanair announced a recruitment drive for 200 cabin crew at its UK bases as the carrier recovers and rebuilds from the pandemic.

Indonesia has set 14 October 2021 for the reopening of Bali to international travelers.

Aer Lingus is still in talks with the country’s sovereign wealth fund about a possible additional loan to help it with the crisis.

British Airways is set to rehire up to 3,000 cabin crew after thousands of jobs were cut when the pandemic.

Fiji Airways has announced a return to commercial flying for international travellers from 01 December 2021.

Thai Smile wants to restart its international services as early as November 2021, in line with the government’s plan to re-open the country to foreign tourists.

India is set to begin granting fresh tourist visas to foreigners travelling by chartered flights on 15 October 2021. Tourists may enter through non-chartered flights with a tourist visa starting 15 November 2021.

Thai Airways International will resume full service on 36 foreign routes to destinations in Europe, Asia and Australia, most on 31 October 2021, in response to the government’s decision to reopen the kingdom to tourists,

Rex to recommence its Australia domestic services connecting Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra from 15 November 2021, with B737s. Regional operations throughout NSW and Victoria will also resume with Saab 340s.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian predicted that the company will return to pre-pandemic levels by summer 2022, saying it currently sits at about two-thirds of its normal business.
