Yesterday's daily review:

ANA All Nippon Airways will suspend services on 16 international flight routes from late March 2021 due to falling travel demand.

HNA Group (Hainan, China) said a local government-led working team has finished due diligence at the company and laid out risk disposal plans, enabling it to move to the next stage of resolving a multi-year liquidity crisis. Also, Gu Gang has resigned as the executive chairman, but he remains as the head of the government-led workgroup.

Turkish Airlines resumed its flights from Istanbul to Isfahan after almost a year of suspension over the pandemic.

Volotea is ready to launch several routes between France and Algeria as soon as the latter’s borders are reopened.

Daily review:

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and easyJet criticised a possible plan for mandatory quarantine in hotels for some or all arrivals to Britain and called for a support package.

Southwest Airlines has dropped a large portion of its Hawaii flights from March 2021 to May 2021 due to travel restrictions. In other news, Southwest Airlines is offering employees another round of voluntary leave as its staffing levels remain high and the demand low.

The German government is discussing reducing to almost zero the number of flights into Germany in response to the pandemic.

New Zealand needs to provide roughly US$432 million in additional support to airlines in order to keep air links to New Zealand open while the country’s borders remain closed, says Board of Airlines Representatives of New Zealand.

France has just announced that Ethiopian Airlines won't be able to serve France due to high number of imported Covid19 cases in France, from passenegers flyging with ET. Don't know when the ban will be lifted. Flights to Paris and Marseille will be suspended

Incorrect translation: France requires airlines to check if passengers have a negative PCR test before departure to France. Several cases of non compliance by Ethiopian have been noted, hence the ban.

Daily review (not likely to stop any time soon):

Aeroflot has made changes to the flight schedule in spring 2021, and cancelled flights to 43 countries due to travel restrictions.

Aerolineas Argentinas received US$638 million from the government to sustain itself throughout 2020, similar to the state subsidies it received in 2014.

Aeromexico pilots’ union accepted a proposal to reduce up to US$350 million in equivalent salaries and benefits under collective bargaining agreements for the next four years. A total of 79 pilots will be dismissed as part of the deal.

Air Europa to readjust its flight schedule for the coming months and is also studying tightening the adjustments to the workforce, as part of plans to reduce costs through salary adjustments or cuts in benefits.

Air Transat has sent out a notice to its travel agent partners saying it is suspending its flights out of Toronto for the remainder of the 2020-21 winter season, due to “challenges”.

Amaszonas Uruguay has informed government officials that it plans to close its passenger operations in the coming days due to low demand. The carrier is looking to “reinvent” itself.

American Airlines Group retired five aircraft types in 2020 — E190, B757, B767, A330 and CRJ200, along with a number of older regional aircraft. The company also placed certain older B737-800s into temporary storage. The Group also reached an agreement with Boeing to secure rights to defer deliveries of 18 B737 MAX aircraft and finalized a series of sale/leaseback to finance its A321 deliveries in 2021. To date, five of the 18 MAX deferral rights have been exercised.

British Airways union Unite has secured a deal to end the long-running dispute over the carrier’s plans to fire and rehire the workforce in its cargo division.

Delta Air Lines plans to bring 400 of its pilots back by summer 2021 as the airline seeks to position itself for a rebound in travel demand.

Garuda Indonesia employees’ union asked the government to immediately disburse funds for national economic recovery to the airline, as they fear the carrier will go bankrupt.

Scope Ratings says the economic shock from Covid-19 has been especially severe in Europe where airlines have for years struggled to generate sustainable cash flow amid overcapacity and fierce competition. The credit outlook for European airlines remains negative.

Tunisair forms an advisory committee to restructure the company with the aim of developing a recovery plan.

Ukraine International Airlines plans to resume flights from Kyiv to Tbilisi from 31 January 2021, as Georgia partially opened its borders.

United Airlines is giving up about 150,000 square feet of space in its Willis Tower headquarters in response to the pandemic.

Norway follows other country that applies extreme measures despite the total lack of justification from the statistics.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but if we would have closed our borders a year ago with 0 deaths a day the crisis would, more than probably, be far behind us by now.

Aeromexico will temporarily suspend all its routes to Canada from the second week of February 2021, after the government of Canada tightens travel restrictions.

Air Transat announces the complete suspension of all scheduled flights until 30 April 2021 and the repatriation of its customers to Canada. This operation is expected to take place over the next two weeks.

Air Wisconsin is temporarily laying off 140 airport employees effective 01 April 2021 because of negative impacts from the pandemic.

American Airlines warns its flight attendants’ union of growing uncertainties in both international and domestic demand, and might again find itself overstaffed.

British Airways does not intend to operate scheduled passenger flights to South Africa for another two months, though this could be subject to change.

Etihad says it will continue to operate flights from the UK to Australia despite Britain halting inbound flights from the UAE.

Greater Bay Airlines of Hong Kong may start with cargo services first in late summer 2021 if the pandemic makes passenger flights infeasible.

Hong Kong Airlines has been penalised for breaching the rules of a government coronavirus wage subsidy scheme that provided it US$19.9 million.

TAP Air Portugal to suspend 93% of its operations in February 2021 after additional travel restrictions were announced. It had previously planned to have a 73% reduction.

United Airlines said the jobs of roughly 14,000 employees are at risk when the second round of federal aid expires in spring 2021.

Canada’s major airlines suspend all flights to Mexico and the Caribbean until 30 April 2021, due to the pandemic.

Daily review:

Airbus workers in Flintshire have voted to reduce their working week by up to 10% in a bid to save jobs. The proposal came after the firm announced in 2020 it was looking to shed 1,435 posts at its Broughton plant.

American Airlines chief executive Doug Parker told employees to brace for another round of furlough warnings in the near term as it expects to be over-staffed on 01 April 2021, when a payroll support package for airline workers expires.

IndiGo says international operations could make a full recovery by the end of 2021, with domestic recovery at 100% by April.

Middle East Airlines is reducing frequencies between Beirut and Paris as well as to several cities in Saudi Arabia, due to new travel restrictions.

Philippine Airlines announced that 30% or 2,300 of its over 7,000 workforce will be laid off by mid-March 2021, as the airline weathers the pandemic.

Qatar Airways has temporarily suspended acceptance of new bookings from the UAE for the next seven days due to the British government’s concerns. South Africa and Rwanda are also temporarily suspended.

SWISS is temporarily reducing its already-downsized flight operations in Geneva to an absolute minimum until the end of February 2021, in view of the tighter travel restrictions announced by the Swiss government.

Aeroflot has postponed deliveries of previously ordered aircraft to 2022-2025. The type of aircraft was not disclosed.

Air Canada to indefinitely suspend all activities at its low-cost subsidiary Rouge and lay off 80 employees effective 08 February 2021.

Air France-KLM CEO Benjamin Smith warns against possible “drastic measures” imposed by the EU for the recapitalisation of the Group, such as the sale of slots at Paris Orly.

Alitalia may receive at least another €150-200 million as compensation for the damage suffered from the pandemic.

Austrian Airlines to accelerate its austerity plan and examine further measures due to increased travel restrictions.

Regent Airways of Bangladesh will resume flights in March 2021 after a 10-month hiatus.

S7 Airlines proposes the Russian government should extend the airline subsidy programme by another US$158.5 million until April 2021, amid restrictions due to the pandemic.

TAP Air Portugal pilots’ union has reached an agreement with the airline and the government on suspending the existing company agreement, as the airline prepares for a restructuring to cope with the effects of the pandemic.

Virgin Australia warns of more job losses with government support for the airline set to end in March 2021.

Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau insisted Ottawa would ensure airlines survived the pandemic.

Daily review:

Air India is set to witness record loss this fiscal amid strict travel curbs and border lockdowns due to the pandemic. The airline is likely to incur a net loss of US$1.3 billion in the year through March 2021.

ANA Holdings plans to reduce its workforce in the aviation business by roughly 20% over the next five years through natural attrition to cut costs and cope with depressed travel demand.

Emirates has been suspended in Nigeria for alleged violations of COVID-19 guidelines in its operation.

Thai Airways International plans to bring the number of pilots in its workforce down to 905, and to achieve this it is considering laying off 395 pilots. The carrier also does not plan to hire more pilots between 2021 and 2022. Thai Airways plans to focus its fleet on the A350-900, the B777-300ER and B787, and retire its 15 A330s and four A380s, while replacing the lost capacity with up to 10 more B787s.

Boeing executives have warned the White House that requiring COVID-19 tests before travelling on US domestic passenger airline flights could pose significant economic harm.

LAN Argentina announced the definitive cessation of its operations in the country due to the impact from the pandemic.

Talofa Airways of Samoa has suspended scheduled operations until the country reopens its borders.

Viva Aerobus will maintain growth plans even in the midst of the pandemic as the carrier expects to receive 40 new aircraft in the next five years.

Greece is extending the restrictions on domestic flights and international to 15 and 22 February 2021, respectively, to help contain the spread of Covid-19.

US House committee will consider a Democratic plan to allocate another US$14 billion to extend payroll assistance to US airlines to keep thousands of workers on the job through 30 September 2021.

Over the course of last year, a dramatic fall of 60 percent in international air travel had been witnessed by UN's air transportation agency. This is due to the coronavirus pandemic that has battered the aviation and tourism industry all over the world. The report said the pandemic caused international air travel to drop to levels last seen in 2003.

Australia announced on February 5 that it would keep mandatory two-week quarantine for all overseas visitors, even as vaccinations are rolled out across the country and the world.
