British airways to lay off “up to 40%” of it’s staff short term and maybe longer term. Looking into faster retirement of older aircraft and parking newer ones.

IATA has indeed called on governments to consider extending lines of credit, reducing infrastructure costs and cutting taxes amid the coronavirus outbreak, as airlines appealed for urgent government financial support.Inquirer wrote: ↑13 Mar 2020, 20:57 Meanwhile, reports are emerging that national governments are going to be asked to bail out their flag carriers, including our government.

That would be starting a dangerous game, unless the EU puts limits on the level of assistance that could be provided to airlines. Otherwise, Italy will jump on the opportunity to save Alitalia at any cost. France with its nationalistic habits will inject whatever is necessary to keep Air France afloat. And Germany will maintain its assistance to Lufthansa at the lowest possible level. And in the UK, Johnson is unpredictable.
So far for the "level playing field" that the EU is supposed to protect.
