And the Geneva International Motor Show

The 90th edition of the GIMS, which was supposed to welcome the media from next Monday and the general public from 5 to 15 March 2020, will now finally not take place. This is an injonction decision of the Federal Council of 28 February 2020 that no events with more than 1,000 people are allowed to take place until 15 March 2020. The decision falls 3 days before the opening of the exhibition to the media.

Airlines suspending or readjusting routes due to Coronavirus

Post by jan_olieslagers »

As for the Geneva motor show being cancelled: that is just one more indication of the virus outbreak affecting the complete economy and the complete society, far beyond our little domain of (commercial) aviation.

The impact on commercial air transport seems to be huge indeed, IATA publishes quite panicky reports about both passenger and cargo transportation. Many airlines being already in financial trouble, this added problem could well be a death blow to several. Not to mention the B737MAX catastrophe - no airline will be in a hurry now to put this type into service, given the wide and relatively inexpensive availability of better proven airframes.

ITB Berlin was 04-08 March. I hope for the thousands of overseas visitors that they hadn't departed yet, because even for the industry, air tickets to the ITB are expensive. Let's hope airlines show their goodwill now...

Hm, that sounds like a nice wish, I can only agree. Only, it seems that the highly competitive market leaves less and less room for goodwill. More's the pity, of course.

It is now confirmed that HNA will be taken over by the government of the Hainan province.

There will be a few options with 2 possible important once:

1. They will rescue them and let them stay independent
2. They will let them merge in one of the several big ones

Let's hope that we will not lose the connections with China after the lost of 3 connections with India with Jetairways

Not willing to sound like an alarmist, but it you look at the pace and the depth at which European airlines are cutting back also regional flying, I think BRU will soon have other worries than losing some connection to the PRC...

I have no figures, but circumstantial evidence points to booking numbers simply falling through the floor everywhere right now, which wouldn't surprise me at all, given the travel ban issued by many big companies.

Hainan has been struggling for a long time and even without Corona their future would have been very uncertain.
I am afraid others could follow indeed.

Strangely enough, during the Airlines for Europe Summit today at Brussels, the coronavirus crisis was not mentioned in the presentation to the press, though it is severely affecting the airline industry. But during the Q&As session, most questions were about that topic.

Willie Walsh (IAG) replied that airlines were doing the utmost to prevent the disease to spread, reducing flights being the best response. Michael O'Leary (Ryanair) commented: "Let's take the Coronavirus hit, rather than discounting to fill aircraft and encouraging unnecessary travel." He expects the crisis to be forgotten in a few weeks.

Thomas Reynaert (A4E) said IATA had demanded that the 80/20 slot allocation rule be suspended (which is currently refused by the European Commission in expectation of further data). Nevertheless, the airline CEOs call on regulators to act fast and to temporarily suspend slot use rules.

Walsh added that the coronavirus crisis should not be an excuse for weak airlines to ask for State aid. Carsten Spohr (Lufthansa) mentioned that the number of aircraft grounded changes on a daily basis and is constantly adapted to the needs.
