The name of the airport on Facebook (HKIA) is misleading: usually, HKIA refers to Hong Kong International Airport, not to Windhoek!

Eurowings (operated by Brussels Airlines Airbus A330 reg. OO-SFP) thus returned to Windhoek, Namibia this morning

Windhoek airport's official name is Hosea Kutako international airport, hence HKIA.

Yeah, revisiting the title of the old song : What a difference a year makes.
Screenshot of 22SEP … 2019.

Then, SN long-haul fleet all out towards NA and AFI markets.
Today, a handful of commercial flights per week. Most not even sustained by commercial demand but by spot requirements.

Our capacity to envisage the future is typically based on the assumption that it will be in line with the recent past. A type of linear regression. So, what base do we have for our projection? How can we prepare for what future?

Time to think out of the box?
Lots of barriers for candidate travelers. Business demand is a good as dead for +6 months to come, and for all travelers : red countries, closed borders, $150 PCR test on arrival, quarantine on return, fear of contamination, ...
Lamar Muse left Southwest to start his own MuseAir, 2x2 leather seats DC-9, comfy, non-smoking, and siphoned out of Southwest those who didn't want to be considered like sardines. Muse had identified that there was a market segment where people were ready to pay a bit more to travel differently. That's out of the box thinking. (not that MuseAir was successful in the long term though and was later bought by ... Southwest).

OK, cost cutting and reducing personnel is the default panacea but then what?

See ya ... on 22SEP21.

As to the future of business travel. Our organisation is active in 120+ countries, with repo office in 15+. Myself, for 20 years, I have been flying weekly, either intra-Europe or Intercontinental. We are all grounded now since March, zero flights. We foresee nothing until maybe next summer. But then, we foresee T&E budget cuts by well over 80%. Virtual meetings have now been accepted as the norm, also for commercial interactions. Large industry conferences that used to attract 10K + participants all moved “virtual”. Somehow it works. I have no view how an organisation like SN is going to survive this, let alone the business hotel business. That part of the aviation business is not coming back any time soon.

And in this real world, who are the passengers on these planes, I don't quite understand, and how many are there? I guess you can count them on the fingers of one hand!

Few days ago, i was working on a flight at Paris CDG, and a SN 320 was parked next to me. There were many heavies bags. I guess that the final destination, was the African continent.

From mid October2020, Qatar Airways will resume almost its African network and will start services, to Accra and Luanda. I guess the airline will tap into the trafic, between Africa and Asia

For exemple, the 3 main biggest markets, between Africa and Asia:

China: business, African students
India: African students, VFR (Indians living in Africa), medical tourism, Humanitarian staff deployed for the UN
Middle East: business, VFR (Lebanese living, in Africa) and workers. There are many African domestic workers who work in Lebanon in the Emirates, or in Saudi Arabia.

RwandAir has said that flights to China are almost full, and Dubai flights have good loads. https://www.theeastafrican.co.ke/tea/bu ... ts-2370300

Demand to Africa is probably, higher-than-expected

I must admit I do not see a bright future neither... how long will airlines be able to survive on such low income. How long will civilians be willing to support airlines via government subsidies/loans. In my sector, we are having hard times at -25% revenue vs last year, let alone you are at -95% ... ! I saw a publicity campaign recently of SN on Facebook, low fares to Italy. All, but ALL comments were negative, in the sense of “pay my refund of my cancelled flights of June first, before I am even considering of booking a new flight, that might probably get cancelled as well..” Desperation is never good, but who sees any relief for this industry... ? Chances, opportunities that keep your fleet and staff busy ? OK, some cargo, but that won’t make up for the total loss, would it ? Before the confidence of the public is reinstated, a lot of water went to the sea... and airlines to the bottom of it ? ( sorry to be so negative...)

Neither does BRU CEO Arnaud Feist.

I can't read the article below, but the header says ‘We no longer see a light at the end of the tunnel' and 'Thousands of jobs will disappear’.

I wonder what he expected? That after summer Covid would be over? The second wave is coming fast now, it will be a horid winter and many business and people will have to find a way to survive until next spring and even months after.

I agree that the future looks bleak, but we have learned from the past that the world can bounce back faster then expected after a crisis. Sure, this one is unprecedented but specificaly in aviation, it might present an opportunity to rethink the entire business.

Hello

Anyone knows, when SN will publish its winter timetables ? Or did they already publish it ?

Air France will operate only 50% of its capacity and probably thanks to the, the airline domestic network

Thanks

I doubt it: KLM has no domestic network and will fly more than 55% this winter.

About KLM, if i understand, it's 55% for its European network only, for November: https://news.klm.com/klm-prepares-for-winter-schedule/

About Air France, it's 50%of capacity for its global network, currently till 3JAN21. Air France has ended several domestic routes, operated by HOP and many regions, in France are in red about covid19. But AF will operate some flights between Paris Cdg and some French Overseas Territories (Fort de France and Pointe à Pitre)

Routes closed by AF / HOP

After more than 6 months, first commercial flight to EBB today as SN467.
Will be a 1-hour turnaround before returning to BRU. Very low load apparently.
SN467 to EBB 20201003.png
EBB reopened to scheduled traffic on 01OCT with TK, EK, ET and a couple of others.
KL is also flying back to EBB today but via KGL.

Really wonder how much money they are losing with this pandemic.

I think we took the same flights. I find a really nice gesture that they spray your hands with antiseptic upon entrance and that they do distribute one wipe per pax. onboard.

Service also is fully back (buy-on-board). Service in C seemed to me different on the BRU-FCO (only 1 pax and i think they just distributed a sandwich with a bottle of water). On the FCO-BRU (which had way more pax incl. the president of the EP), i think they served something more substantial and service seemed more attentive.

Also, the dividers are now business/economy, compared to the previous ones.
