I think he simply means that if your position wasn't already the strongest, the Corona story definitely will not help neither
Exactly, just as with humans, the virus can be lethal for the weak ones whilst the strong ones just go through a difficult moment but recover quickly.
Flybe is, unfortunately, a good example as are the bankruptcy of Sabena and Swissair just after 9/11
exactly what I meant. When you are already going through a cost reduction program, having to cut 23% of your SH flights when you're costs remain relatively the same is a big thing, no matter how much some try to downplay it
I fully agree this will have a big financial impact on them, as on any other company probably.

However, it's not so difficult to single out these exceptional costs from the end result -which ALL airlines are currently suffering- and look at just the baseline performance as if there's no corona crisis.

The only real issues are:

1- is your shareholder willing to look to your strategic long term performance, rather than just your immediate bottom line results in such an external crisis?

2- is he sufficiently well funded to be able to 'forgive' you these exceptional costs?

As to that second question, I think there's no doubt about the fact Lufthansa can weather the cost of this storm; given the global and not permanent nature of this corona crisis, I very much expect the answer is 'yes' to the first question too in fact. In a way, you could argue they are already doing so right now even.

I'm just wondering: are these financial worries really only applicable to Brussels Airlines as Belgian carrier? Or do other Belgian carriers -some with limited financial backbone- also suffer?

3- is the sufficiently well funded, as my friend Ansett thinks, looking for an excuse to throw their stepchild overboard?
4–is the sufficiently well funded prepared to draw even more money down the drain just to keep some competitors out of their backyard?
5-are the equally well funded competitors looking into attacking the weakest link of the well funded?
6-is the well funded prepared to revert to a strategy of unsustainable growth once this is over or will they opt for a further consolidation?

No doubt the panic button has been hit in many boardrooms in Belgium and around the world, but this is a topic about Brussels Airlines.

Why do we have a topic "Impact of the coronavirus on aviation" then?

My take on this - it will affect everyone. SN if I am not mistaken is break-even (no profit or loss). They should be fine. OS in all honesty while 'doing better' but not really in my eyes has handful, Wizzair and Lauda + Malta Air will not stop expanding and will probably continue to do so. LH better focus on EW and its return to profitability. The separation should have already happened and dragging it out makes it worse for both EW and SN. SN is in the position it has already started a reboot programme. OS also, but I am begging to think they will need to do some drastic measures sooner than later.

Jan Smets will replace Count Etienne Davignon in May as co-Chairman of the Board of Brussels Airlines. Former airline CEO Christina Foerster is taking the other co-Chairmanship in replacement of Thorsten Dirks, who gets other responsibilities with the Lufthansa Group.

It has not been mentioned in the articles on the homepage. But Brussels Airlines, not only scraps the flights to New York LFK (keeping only Washington IAD in its US schedule), but also scraps the flights operated by Eurowings from Düsseldorf to all US destinations.

Sorry for those who take it wrong ... but two flights canceled. One at AF, settled in 24 hours ... flight moved to much later, and at SN ...Yes I still took an African flight with them...I await a response to a message left 5 days ago, the platform for moving a flight does not work ... and I don't even talk about the phone. I probably still had illusions! I don't think anyone will answer me anymore ...

Strange, do you think that there are more passengers who’s flight has been cancelled due to Corona, or might it be that you are the only one? Some patience in these harsh times for aviation, is that too much to ask?
