04 August 2021 - SAA receives renewed operating license

JOHANNESBURG (August 4) - SAA has taken another significant step closer to resuming operations after being granted a renewed operating license by the regulator, the South African Civil Aviation Authority, under the stewardship of Captain Sakhile Reiling, SAA’s Interim Executive: Operations.

SAA’s Interim CEO Thomas Kgokolo says, “This is an important development as SAA readies itself to take to the skies again in just a few weeks. At our Airways Park headquarters, in hangars and at terminals around the country our staff are hard at work in finishing the final preparatory phases before we make an official announcement about the exact take-off date.

Mango Airlines (the low-cost subsidiary of South African Airways) begins its first meetings as part of its business rescue process, with employee representatives and creditors being briefed on the steps ahead.

South African Airways itself has chosen a strategic equity partner, the Takatso consortium, which is at an advanced stage of the due diligence process that should be completed “in the next week or so”, says the Department of Public Enterprises.

South African Airways will need a more modern fleet to be competitive on routes outside its home continent, as its ageing Airbus planes have prohibitive operating costs.

South African Airways said an amended business rescue plan for its subsidiary Mango was approved at a meeting of creditors, paving the way for the airline to seek an equity partner. The bidding process is anticipated to be completed by the end of March 2022.

South African Airways will still need to account for the public funds it was allocated when it underwent business rescue, and 51% of its shareholding was disposed of.

SAA stands to lose some key routes if it fails to comply with obligations from air services council

An Aviation expert has warned that South African Airways (SAA) could lose some of its lucrative routes if its operating licence is suspended.

This is after the national carrier was this week, given 90 days by the South African Air Services Licensing Council to meet its compliance obligations and give more details regarding its deal with Takatso Consortium.

It seems that the airline plans to relaunch intercontinental routes, to Brazil, USA and Australia.

South African Airways is adjusting its hub strategy by considering a multi-hub approach under inclusive plans.

South African Airways (SA, Johannesburg OR Tambo) has shifted its pre-Covid strategy from single hub focused on Johannesburg OR Tambo and is considering a multi-hub approach as it slowly re-enters the intercontinental market, says newly appointed Acting Chief Agent commercial Tebogo Tsimane.

[...]

He previously told Travel News that planned intercontinental routes by the end of fiscal years 2022/2023 (March 2023) include:

• From Cape Town: New York JFK (United States), Sao Paulo Guarulhos (Brazil) and at least one Australian city (Sydney Kingsford Smith and/or Perth Int'l).

• From Johannesburg: Perth (Australia) and Washington Dulles (United States) via Accra (Ghana).

South African Airways is in talks with Airbus to acquire a new widebody aircraft by April 2023 to replace its A340 which it wants to dispose of. The international destinations are to be announced by 2022 end.
