Transformation of Brucargo

Post by Atlantis »

Just like in my Topic: BRU Star, Oneworld and Skyteam under one roof and the future plans of the PAX area, also Brucargo is changing a lot.

This is maybe less spectacular and not so seen and experienced by PAX, but Brucargo is also changing already since a couple of years.

This is also part of the plan to make it modern, greener (renewable enegry, green transportation and green roofs) and to make it bigger regarding volume and diversify regarding cargo. During the years a lot of old cargo buildings were demolished and replaced by modern ones. Clients were moving from one to the other new building according to their needs.

Just like the future A Pier West, we have also a Brucargo West. Despite A Pier West, Brucargo West is almost finised. Many years ago they started to develop with new buildings next to TNT Express. TNT Express was the last building at that time at Brucargo. But at the new Brucargo West, Second Line, B Post, UTI, DHL and many others found their new and very modern place. In this Second Line, this is only for services/handling, a last new building will be constructed before the end of 2021.

But what is also important in Brucargo West is the current construction of First Line. First Line has direct contact with the tarmac, planes. WFS, Expeditors and Kuehne & Nagel will be the new tennants. The huge new long building, almost till the Brussels highway, will be finished in 2020.
This whole project, but of course also some other construction works, has an investment of 100 million euro.

What is not in this budget is the new tarmac and new parking space for cargo planes in front of this new First Line buildings. This will be budgetted later.

By this we can say that Brucargo West will be for 99% finised by 2020. The whole First Line handling has to be finised in 2021 which is Phase 1.

In meantime also the very old building of Swissport, also First Line, is under reconstruction.

In June 2019 Brinks received a whole new building, VTAC - Valuables Transport and Accomodation. This was very needed to have a very secured and modern building for them.

What not many people know is that many years ago, I speak around 20 years ago, the biggest zoo of Belgium was located at BRU, better saying under the ground of BRU. Temporary of course as a lot of animals came in and out via BRU. During the years after it decreased drastically.
But since two years, this idea popped up again to diversify the cargo operations. Not only heavy export of cargo and Pharma but also to construct a whole new center for life animals. This building, quite big, is also under construction.

When we go back to the East side of Brucargo, the main entrance of Brucargo. We will see also there huge changes.

This part includes the Delhaize supermarket, Car Hotel, the empty space next to Car Hotel and the gas station.
This will become a cargo Hub. By 2021 a 1st phase has to be completed. This means that a whole new building will be constructed where a new supermaket will be, parking space for PAX and staff, the new car rental, car hotel and check-in for pax and new baggage drop-off.
Pax and staff will experience the full automated transport system, the airport shuttle, which will bring them to the Pax terminal

This new Cargo Hub will be extended before 2030, which is in Phase 2.

Swissport International has opened its state-of-the-art Pharma Center for temperature-sensitive cargo shipments at Brussels Airport. The new facility offers 3,620 sqm of temperature-controlled warehouse space, providing clients with an end-to-end cool chain. Once completed the cargo complex will boast some 25,000 sqm of warehouse space.
