05/05/2019 Aeroflot Sukhoi Superjet emergency landing at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport - 41 fatalities

Post by luchtzak »

On 5 May, an Aeroflot Sukhoi Superjet 100-95B (RA-89098) departed from Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport for flight SU1492 towards Murmansk. Shortly into the flight, the pilots requested to return to Moscow for an emergency landing as a fire was located on board after a lightning strike. 30 minutes after take-off, the aircraft returned to Moscow where the aircraft burned out completely.

A sad story! At least one person dead, likely more. The story is recent so information may change rapidly. But modern airliners are obviously not inherently resistent to lightning strikes, more's the pity.

Very sad indeed, only front slides appeared to have opened as you can tell from this picture by a friend who was at Sheremetyevo at that moment.

Dear old VRT mentions the pilot REQUESTED an emergency landing - hm, I always learned emergency landings were announced, rather than requested...

I am more worried about the Fire Brigade not being there
But hey, it's Russia, what do you expect

About the luggage, I understand you being pissed off
But people are selfish and will do bad to eachother for one's convenience
Look at all the commuters to Brussels racing through with their cars
People will kill someone else if it suits them

IMHO this has nothing to do with Aeroflot. Some people will behave like that, whatever the company, notwithstanding what the crew will tell them. Sad!

How stupid can you be to film this from inside the cabin??? It' for a reason that you have to 'brace for impact'!

At the same time Aeroflot has very recently placed a billboard at Brussels Airport departure hall advertising flights to Colombo, Sri Lanka. It wasn't there on May 1st and I saw it last night. I feel sorry for them.

15:03z : Take off
15:10z : reaching 10 000 ft
15:11z : squawk 7600
15:28z : after a 180 following a first landing attempt, squawk 7700 below 2000 ft

Time stamps rounded to the minute by FR24
Screenshot 2019-05-06 09.41.37.png
Screenshot 2019-05-06 09.47.14.png

So maybe the initial problem (due to lightning ?) was a radio failure > squawk 76
On final, declaring emergency squawk 77.

This may explain why the RFFS had not be called in advance and pre-positioned.

Sad day.

SuperJet International desires to extend its profound condolences for the families and friends of the victims in the Aeroflot flight SU1492 accident in Moscow, as well as its best wishes for the recovery of those injured.

SuperJet International remains available for any eventual further support to the Authorities, the TCH and the OEMs, even if, in accordance with international protocol governing aviation accidents, SJI is not in the position to be directly involved in the investigations. For any further information, contacts have to be directed to the competent bodies of the Russian Civil Aviation Organizations.

Both flight data recorders from the Aeroflot Sukhoi Superjet 100 that burst into flames after emergency landing at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport yesterday have been found.

"Both recorders have been recovered. Their condition is yet to be determined. Whether we can decode the data will be clear after we open them," an emergency service source told TASS.

Interesting piece in The New York Times questioning communications of Aeroflot after Sunday's SSJ100 crash, initially talking about smooth evacuation and no victims. Almost reminding of propaganda, before a rude awakening with at least 41 dead only today.

The only good reason is that they were maybe not really in touch with what was happening.

Please note as well firefighters brigades were blocked outside the airport...
