Eurowings Europe (Austria) applied for a foreign air carrier permit, an exemption, and a statement of authorisation for service between the EU and the US. To compete with Austrian Airlines? :mrgreen:

In other news, LGW (a Eurowings unit, formerly Air Berlin) will be owned by the Zeitfracht Group (Germany), effective 01 April 2019, following an agreement with Eurowings. The long-term wet-lease agreement will remain, with Zeitfracht planning to expand the fleet of the LGW in the medium term.

AFAIK all its longhaul is flown by either Brussels Airlines or SunExpress.

It looks like Trump is striking again! DOT will no longer accept flights operated for European carriers by wet-lease subcontractors. Thus Sun Express will not be allowed to fly to the US for Eurowings. SN being part of Eurowings might be allowed to continue. Did I understand correctly?

If I understand the article correctly, Trump-strikes-again just adapts the reciprocity principle: "we'll do to you what you do to us". From the article: "...The DOT notes that in September 2008 the EU limited to 14 months authorities for non-EU airlines to engage in wet lease operators for EU airlines. The US had no such restrictions – a discrepancy US airlines claimed hindered their ability to compete for European wet-lease work..."

No, reciprocity would mean banning US wet-leases amongst US carriers operating into EU. Where a EU ban for US carriers wet-leasing for EU carriers is for a Good reason. They are operating under a different set of FTL rules which are in general less limiting than EU rules, creating a sort of social fraud.

Eurowings and the union Verdi have made a breakthrough in collective bargaining for the approximately 1,000 cabin staff at the airline, however, it has not been finalised yet.

Eurowings to launch Cologne – Trieste, Dusseldorf – Tirana, and Hamburg to Ankara, Antalya, and Bodrum, in summer 2019 with A319s operated by Germanwings.

Lufthansa Group and United Airlines jointly protest the proposed US government’s limit or termination of wet-lease authorisation granted to certain foreign carriers of the EU.

Eurowings is in talks with some of its unions about merging its various AOCs to gain efficiencies.

Eurowings will introduce seasonal summer flights from Stuttgart and Dusseldorf to Ohrid, beginning 21 June 2019.

Has it been mentioned here that EW will take over the Munich-Bangkok flights from Lufthansa under an LH code? The flights will be done using an Airbus A330-200

LH792 will be taken over by Sun Express Germany, taking away Business class on this route. Starting november the route will be discontinued by LH and taken over completely by EW under LH5446 ( a code share )

According to De Tijd/L'Echo, Eurowings posted a loss over 2018 as was already reported by LH in today's press release, but Brussels Airlines itself was profitable, before consolidation into Eurowings:

Quite a strange attitude on display here not to be more forthcoming and proud even about its own achievements in Belgium, both on the operational front (more than 10M passengers last year) as well as on the financial one (being profitable), but to prefer to report about consolidated group results which are nothing to write home about really.... you'd almost get the impression the resilience and achievements in Belgium are an inconvenience to the German management.

in the first place LH said they'll downgrade to the A350

I'm convinced the resilience and achievements of SN are an inconvenience to LH management. They try to hide the good results in consolidated figures and say that SN must be even more profitable . In order to save EW ?

The SN results are positive, but not enough. SN is not allowed to publish separate figures as part of Eurowings, but they will be released in May by the National Bank of Belgium because every Belgian company has to report them and they are then made public.

IMHO, what will likely happen is that EW will not yield the "promised" profits on the long term, and I predict that EW will have two pillars (in order to avoid that CS is losing face):
-> Accelerate to replace all LH-flights that have a pressure on the costs (due the higher costs of LH-metal and personnel) and let the flights operate by the cheaper 'wet-lease' EW. Metal is still branded as LH but likely with the words "Operated by Eurowings" or "Operated by CityLine".

-> Focus EW on seasonal high density routes for the tour operators (point-to-point) because of the tour operators negotiate for heavy discounts.

That's likely one of the few options that is left for CS to deliver on his EBIDA promises made to the investors.

The SN is profitable (not much, but still positive); I suspect the profitability is actually higher because SN got A340 metal shoved to them (probably German cabin crew and pilots as well) that increased the OPEX but didn't add much top-line revenue (as SN hadn't a control what they could do with the A340's); so basically it is an artificial and sneaky way to show that SN doesn't deserve investments. (At least that's what I would have done if I was CS's shoes and under pressure to deliver).

Eurowings plans to offer new seasonal routes to Ohrid, from both Dusseldorf and Stuttgart, beginning in mid-July and June 2019, respectively.

Following Air Italy now Nordstar of Russia are adopting the purple and blue colours of EW on their first 738max.
