Chengdu Airlines took delivery of its 5th ARJ21 on April 29.

The aircraft, registered B-3388 and delivered in a 90-seat all-economy configuration, is the latest addition to the ARJ21 passenger fleet, which has so far transported over 65,000 passengers over 2600+ flight hours!

HNA Group (China) and COMAC (China) signed a LOI to purchase 20 ARJ21s, the first tangible result between the two sides after signing a strategic cooperation framework agreement in early June 2018. After delivery, the 20 jets will be operated by Urumqi Air, an HNA Group subsidiary.

COMAC says the third prototype C919 completed its first test flight, and that all six will be scheduled to conduct flight tests in 2019.

COMAC announced deals to sell 35 ARJ21-700s to each Air China, China Southern, and China Eastern. The order is worth US$1.3 billion each, with deliveries scheduled from 2020 through 2024.

COMAC (China) says production capacity of the ARJ21s has reached 30 per year and can be increased to 50–60 aircraft per year, pending demand.

China Eastern will start a subsidiary named Air 123 to operate Chinese aircraft exclusively.

On 27/12/2019, C919 AC106 successfully completed its first test flight mission with 30 test points over a 2 hr 5 min flight with a smooth departure/landing from Pudong Airport. As of today, all C919 test flight aircraft are active in the test flight process! Flying strong into 2020!

COMAC delivers 22nd ARJ21, registration B-604D. The aircraft was purchased by SPDB Financial Leasing Co (China) and leased to Chengdu Airlines (China).

COMAC C919 development is going slower than expected, as the company struggles with a range of technical issues that have severely restricted test flights.

China Eastern launched a new subsidiary – OTT Airlines – to push C919 and ARJ21 aircraft to wider markets. The carrier, which already obtained its AOC, will be based out of Shanghai Hongqiao airport.

China Express Airlines signs a strategic partnership agreement with the COMAC to buy a total of 100 ARJ21 and C919 aircraft for delivery from 2020.

A slightly altered confirmation: China Express Airlines signs purchase agreement with COMAC for 100 ARJ21 series and C919 series, with delivery from 2020 to 2030. At least 50 will be ARJ70s and the remaining 50 can be C919s and/or ARJ70s.

China’s Henan Provincial government has become a launch customer for a cargo version of the ARJ21, placing a firm order for 25 aircraft with an option for another 25 units.

Lessor CALC of Hong Kong purchased 30 ARJ21s plus 30 options from COMAC for the ASEAN market. Cooperation will also be explored in the after-sales market.

CALC to unite its subsidiary CATIC Aviation Aftermarket Holdings Co. and COMAC, using Southeast Asia operating outlets as a platform to build it into an overseas operation base for ARJ21 aircraft, as well as promote COMAC’s aircraft aftermarket service capabilities and deploy its aftermarket business development.

In its last days, the US Trump Administration has added Comac to a US Department of Defense blacklist that forbids US investors from buying securities to Chinese companies on the list.

China Southern, China Eastern and Air China held off on a total of 58 planes from Boeing and 53 from Airbus in 2020, but kept every single order from COMAC.

Protectionism? China first?

Commercial Aircraft Corp of China says the construction of the CR929 is expected to start in 2021, while the C919 will be ready for deliveries.

COMAC C919 aircraft is expected to finish flight testing and win airworthiness certification by the end of 2021.

China Eastern expects to take delivery of the world’s first C919 in 2H 2021, as the B737 MAX was removed from its delivery forecast through 2023. Two more C919s will join in 2022 and two more in 2023, with all likely to be operated by its OTT Airlines unit.
