Eurowings will suspend flights between Cologne and Cape Town indefinitely from October.

From a South African travel news daily: "...Tourism Update understands that the underlying problem is that in terms of the bilateral aviation agreement between Germany and South Africa, the German carriers have reached the limit of flights they can operate. With only one flight a week the German carrier needed to increase the number of flights for the route to become more efficient..."

That seems to be the obvious thing to do, even to the cost of a stop in Cologne on the way!

And as an alternate, Joburg wouldn't be bad either for SN.

Thanks for this enlightening video.
At 01:16 appears a pop up "Reclinable Backseat" in the "Best" cabin.
Are they telling me that the backseat is NOT reclinable in the Basic/Smart cabin? For a 6+ hour night flight? Are you kidding?

This makes my next remark very futile but the indication of "Seat Pitch" is misleading for Joe Public. Yes, technically this is what it is : a pitch, i.e. the distance between one point on a seat and the same point on the seat in front or behind, but JP sees this (the arrows) as being the room between his seat and the back of the seat in front.

Shouldn't it be time for the airlines to drop the "economy" for the "backpacker" class definition?
There is a market for backpackers, and a large one for sure, and they want to fly ElCheapo but it is getting more and more annoying to have to scrutinize the "details" (seat pitch, degree of recline, F&B, baggage size and weight, cabin luggage allowed, ....)

Again thanks for sharing the video. Very informative and to be taken into consideration before I book with them.

All seats are reclining...
EW is just emphasizing on the large recline of the PY (Best) seats in an odd way.

No, it's not obvious at all. At least not from the Lufthansa perspective I guess. They want to concentrate traffic on their mainline. All the others (LX, OS, SN) are kept as feeders - with some more (OS) or less (LX and maybe SN) limited number of longhaul destinations.
Best regards,

That's not exactly what Christina Förster said: if there is traffic, there will be flights. If there is a sufficient number of passengers at either end of a route, there will be a flight.

Interview of Eurowings CEO Dirks by Süddeutsche Zeitung:

https://newscloud.eurowings.com/en/pres ... forms.html

A comment of the newspaper: "And Brussels Airlines recently joined the fold, even though that is not an intuitive fit. One gets the impression that Eurowings is a catch-all for everything that doesn’t fit the classic Lufthansa model."

And, apart from a lot of blabla, some statements of Thorsten Dirks which sound nothing good for Brussels Airlines:

Eurowings is clearly separate from the operations of the network airlines Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian. It is an increasingly strong and swiftly growing second pillar of Lufthansa Group.

At Eurowings, we fly directly from A to B, while the hub airlines fly from A to C via B.

Newspaper: Eurowings recorded losses of more than 200 million euros in the first quarter. (!!!)

Dirks: But we decided to prioritize rapid growth over profitability during this exceptional phase.

Draw your own conclusions!

Interesting article in ATW online:

Spohr: Eurowings switches from growth to profitability mode

Lufthansa LCC Eurowings is changing its priority focus from growth to profitability, Lufthansa chairman & CEO Carsten Spohr told ATW in Vienna.

Eurowings is the fastest-growing airline in Europe and will again be profitable next year,” he said. Following a €204 million ($251 million) operating loss in the first quarter of 2018, Spohr predicts the LCC will also make an operating loss for the full year.

We are reaching our strategic goal to operate Eurowings with 210 aircraft and become number three in Europe in terms of size [after LCCs UK’s easyJet and Ireland’s Ryanair]. However, the main problem with Eurowings for us is that we have put growth before profitability for strategic reasons,” he said.

To quickly become the third largest LCC in Europe, Eurowings has made massive investments—especially with significant one-off costs from the integration of former parts of airberlin. For example, the LCC integrated 77 former airberlin aircraft and acquired several new air operator’s certificates, including LGW.

Also, when you do not have enough aircraft available you lease them—this is what we did, but then you have additional costs on top.

Eurowings must reach a cost-structure like easyJet. “We will have a similar level on the revenue side,” Spohr said. “We want to achieve [easyJet’s] level of yield—this is our strategic goal,” he said.
