Even the BELAIR restaurant is complaining about the reduced amount visitors.
Perhaps they are like farmers, for whom weather is never good? :) (and by-the-way I also heard rumours about their staff being so unfriendly that regulars like the BAFA student pilots preferred to go elsewhere for lunch!)

That said: I remain unhappy about the present efforts to make EBAW/ANR into an airport "like all others" - it is really too close to Zaventem for that. One minister Bertrand said so 50 years ago... but times have changed since. As a complement to BRU, Deurne can be valuable and effective, serving high-yield low-frequency operations such as business jets and high yield scheduled traffic like the LCY route. As a competitor, it can only fail.

I think the comments of both saratoga and jan olieslagers are correct!Only a few people are interested in flying from ANR, beside JAF and the LCY flights, they are all becoming failures...A dedicated "biz"airport is a good idea, like in several other countries(France, USA, etc)..

Aside from anything else, my (very frequent) experiences with the BelAir restaurant can only be described as very, very positive. Good food, nice atmosphere, and a decent price.

I remember the good old days of ANR :)
Flying the Sabena 737-200 to LHR and the NLM FH-227 to AMS hahahaha
SN had 2 or sometimes even 3 flights to LHR with 100+ seats and they were pretty full every time I flew... so how come this worked 30+ years ago and now they can't even have a few people on a Fokker... the train?
NLM was mostly connection on KLM so there I can see how thew train has absorbed all that traffic..

But in all honestly if you're flying to one of the destinations served from ANR such as TUI does... and you live within half hour of Antwerp Airport... why on earth would you want to drive to BRU... park and then stand in lines... and then more time waiting between push back and takeoff when you can come to Antwerp and be steps away from the plane and takeoff in 5 minutes.... ANR doesnt need to become a mega busy airport but if TUI can serve their routes and fill the planes 80-90% they can make money and offer a service that the people on the Antwerp region can enjoy.
VLM on the other hand is trying to cover business destinations with non-business schedules so thats not going to work not to mention that you're flying an old prop compared to a new jet with TUI...
If VLM were to offer the same kind of routes as TUI but just other destinations it may work...but making money with a small plane trying to offer low or reasonable fares is no good.... you need 100 seats to be able to make it work.
TUI is smart and doing what they do well... VLM is starting up wanting to be all over the place... Fokkers in Antwerp... A320s for charters... and A330s for China... they should come up with 1 good plan and execute it... perhaps use the Fokkers to feed the A330s and build a network around that and try to cover things that aren't covered yet and where a potential exists...
Ok enough said for tonight :)

I can confirm this. The last few months I passed 3 times by the BelAir restaurant. The staff was very friendly, food was OK . You can have a very good meal at an affordable price in a nice atmosphere, with a view on the tarmac.

With regard to ANR as an airport for scheduled airlines,I am also convinced there is potential which should be exploited to the full .ANR even complements BRU if you look at it from a 'Belgian' perspective.
e.g. the catchment area of ANR stretches out further north than BRU ,well into the Netherlands.
A few weeks ago I was surprised to find that many cars with a Dutch license plate on the parking.
And indeed, for businesses located in Breda,Tilburg,etc..ANR can be a valid alternative as it is closer than AMS and BRU.
For some destinations ,it is currently even the BEST alternative in terms of total traveltime and price.(e.g.LCY,ZRH,and soon: Split,Firenze,Birmingham,Munich,Maribor,London Southend,...)

Having said this,I think the airport and other stakeholders can/should do still a bit more to promote their operation. In Belgium we see regularly ads promoting either EIN or MST (via Corendon). I'm wondering what ANR,VLM,TUI are doing in the Netherlands to promote the airport /flights with our neighbours?
2 weeks ago I paricipated in a seminar near AMS.Many of the Dutch participants were living near Breda and Tilburg,Roosendaal,..I found out that ,unfortunately, most of them were very ignorant as with regard to the destinations and possibilities Antwerp-airport has been offering lately....

So, to summarize,IMHO Antwerp-Deurne for sure has a future as an airport offering both Leisure AND business destinations but it will require quite some extra efforts by all stakeholders involved to exploit the full potential of their USP.

Thanks FLYAIR10, at least one person on this topic who is not negative. Of course everybody is entitled to have an opinion, but please base it on facts:
- TuiFly is having load factors upto 100% and are gradually expanding their offer (Firenze, Innsbruck)
- VLM is reborn, load factors on LCY are growing (in Dec already 25pax average per leg), ZRH just started (of course a code share with LX would even be better). Remember, many of you were so skeptical about their re-launch, now they have 3 AOCs with 6 F50’s and 2 A320s...
- Flying group and ASL are already operating many locally stationed biz jets, and everyday many foreign business planes visit ANR. EGIS needs to make money though, and passenger & landing taxes generated by an EMB190 with 112 pax are much higher than a Citation jet with 1 pax...
- ANR is not trying to compete with BRU or CRL, there is no intention or efforts made to attract Ryanair or similar. The runway is simply too short for that. ANR can be complementary to BRU, looking for niche destinations/traffic (for example specific routes for the Jewish community in Antwerp)
- FlyBe will inaugurate the SEN-service end March. FlyBe is not a ‘cowboy-carrier’ who likes to burn money, they must believe in this route, starting it up for the 2nd time

Finally, I do not know if the forum members follow the news on ‘luchtvaartnieuws.nl’. There you can see how the Dutch defend/invest in their airports (new terminal/parking in Rotterdam, Groningen, Eindhoven, attracting 6M passagiers in Eindhoven and now Corendon starting with 18 destinations at Maastricht, maintenance center CS300 at Rotterdam, new company at Twente to dismantle B747/A340, etc). Then I become so depressed, reading the reactions on this forum.
In 2015, the Flemish government announced they would extend the tarmac at ANR in 2016, build a parallel taxiway in 2017 and re-surface the runway (with new approach light systems) in 2018. NOTHING was realised, now it is rumoured works will only start in 2020. THAT SHOULD BE THE FOCUS ON THIS FORUM, that we should challenge all together!!

Fully agree with ironspan.

I hope that TUIfly will ininvest in some E190E2 . This would allow them to fly to Tel Aviv From Antwerp.

Huge potential on that route, I would think.
However TUI fly stopped flying to Israel from BRU & LGG...I don't know the reasons.

But can an E2 be completely filled with pax and luggage take off from ANR and reach TLV?

Good start for Antwerp-airport in 2018.
TRAFFIC FIGURES JANUARY 2018
Comparison traffic figures between January 2018 and January 2017
Passengers
18,404 in January 2018 compared to 16,808 in January 2017 (+9.5%)
Movements
2,457 in January 2018 compared to 2,233 in January 2017 (+10%)
Freights/tons
143 ton in January 2018 compared to 125 tons in January 2017 (+14.4%)
I'm still puzzled how the freight figure is generated. TUI & VLM or charters and/or road cargo under AWB?

AFAIK, in addition to 'real' airfreight, included in the freight figures are: Luggage: yes / Trucks: not any more

Was the first thing I checked, that's why I asked it here.... but thanks.
And to answer my own question, they are planning to re-open in summer when there are more TUI flights.

Just minutes ago, the first TUIFly flight ANR - Firenze departed, preceded by the traditional water salute from the Firebrigade.
