Kanaal Z has an item about it in its daily news: it looks quite nice and the lounge is definitely much bigger than it used to be, which is a very good thing because the explosive growth of Brussels Airlines over the last few years ment that it was often quite full at peak moments the last year or so.

I spoke to Brussels Airlines about this issue last week. They are very well aware of this issue (which affects also other airlines). As a solution, they will propose a free check-in of trolleys which are not oversize. Remains to be seen if passengers will follow....
Have this improved the on-time performance ?

Actually it was and is always full on Mo-Fr afternoons. On weekends it can be very calm and... empty.

And it is just the extension that is due to be opened up in June: the former Loft was recently revamped a bit, offering even more space at the front windows. It is a really nice lounge now - and always a pleasure to visit!

More of the existing Loft will be upgraded in phase 2 once the extensions are fully operational. The whole sanitary area will be refurbished together with new finishing of the corridor towards it (will be same style as the new sanitary area of the extensions), the common nap box area will be replaced by more massage chairs of Panasonic (as the extension provides individual rooms for sleeping instead of a shared room) and the working space with the pc's will change into an entertainment room with eg pool table in a more livingroom type of style instead of the now quite simple working tables.

Good to hear that: the sanitary area is the bit of the current Loft that is really not up to even moderate standards: cramped, more than once partly out of order and smelly. The sooner this part gets a complete overhaul, the better.

Of course it makes sense to first open the extension and only then close down the "old" part: thus, there is still a lounge for the paxes while phase 2 is underway.

Just received an email from SN :

"From NOK 4,388* fly to 17 African destinations!"

Besides that, the flight to EBB is even lower at NOK3488 .....

So now SN takes me for a Norwegian, which is contradicted by my passport.

I had already been called Christina for several months in 2016, which is also contradicted by my passport besides other features that make me unfit for the role.

Methinks they should not keep the windows open in the marketing office; it mixes up the punch cards.

Brussels Airlines just wrote over Facebook:

"We regret that, despite a substantial offer made by the Brussels Airlines management, the pilot union delegation has called for strike actions as of May 11th. Between today and May 11th, negotiations between the Brussels Airlines management and the union delegations continue to take place. In case of strike actions as of May 11th, our flight schedule will unfortunately be affected, but at this moment in time we do not yet have a full view on the impact. We are working on creating a reduced flight schedule for that day and will update our website with more information as soon as possible:
https://www.brusselsairlines.com/en-be/ ... ssage.aspx

If you have a flight reservation for 11th May, we will update you as soon as possible about the status of your flight.
Therefore, we please ask you to make sure that you have given us your contact details during the booking process. If not, we urge you to add your contact details in the Manage My Booking tool.

We sincerely regret the impact that possible strike actions may cause.

Rest assured that everyone at Brussels Airlines is committed to limiting the impact of possible strike actions and to finding solutions for everyone whose travel plans may be affected."
Best regards,
Viktor

At the 19hrs news of VTM, they said that the gross wages of SN pilots are equal to those of KLM and British Airways but that more taxes are levied on their wage. I think that they compared with the wrong airlines, they should compare with the wages of LH, OS and LX as SN is part of the LH-group.

This strike comes at a very bad time, when decisions are made about the future of the company... It brings back the memories of the Sabena pilots strike just before the collapse of the company... They don't learn, do they?

How can we both scream because the Congolese authorities reduce the frequency of flights on FIH and afford the luxury of canceling flights to FIH... (today) unless there are few passengers of course.
Given the losses announced on this beginning of the year, it may be necessary to rethink the network ...

There is a worldwide shortage of pilots, many airlines have to cancel flights because lack of pilots.
SN pilots are amongst the worst paid pilots in Europe, they lost their special pension system because, for 10 years, their pension contributions have been used to subsidise Brussels Airlines.
The pilots are not responsible for the unsustainable growth and should not be paying for it! If SN goes bankrupt, the pilots will have a better paid job with another airline the next day.

Nothing to do with the pilot strike at the end of Sabena by the way. That was a strike out of frustration because the pilots knew Sabena management was paying themselves fat bonuses abroad, whilst pilots were asked for a huge salary cut. Mr Van Rossem knows all the details and will hapily explain them to you should you want to know them, it will make you change your point of view, I can assure you it changed mine!

I wonder where they get their information, especially KLM.
A 1 year captain at KLM earns +- 18% more than his colleague in Brussels. A full seniority captain in KLM earns +- 60% more than a captain at Brussels with full seniority. This is before tax and not taking into account they pay a 14th month + profit bonus as well in KLM...

BA is approx. the same for a 1 year captain. For full seniority a BA captain takes +- 30% more. Again before tax.

The problem goes beyond being forced to fly at lower frequency, it is a broad diplomatic conflict which resulted in a huge drop in demand between Belgium and the DRC.

As from June the 3 lost frequencies are put on other routes as mentioned before (IAD to daily, extra on ACC/LFW and extra on KGL/EBB). This will be the case until the end of the summer season. Future upgrades again on FIH will depend first on traffic rights but also based on actual demand as that's really weak now for the traditionally very strong local market between Belgium and DRC.

Don’t forget the BA pension fund: until a couple of years ago it was final salary, ie a pension of 10000+£/month at the age of 55. Today many BA pilots are struggling to keep their personal pension pot below the maximum lifetime allowance of 1000 000£....
