SAA is bankrupt
Ho! Hm! Haaaa! Reading is an art! The cited article does not say "bankrupt", it says "technically bankrupt" - carefully explaining that its debts are greater than its assets. Measured along that line, very many are bankrupt, governments not least. Not naming any in particular, of course.

That said, the airline does seem to be in dark waters. I cannot say I am really surprised, all of that country has been going down hill for a couple of decades now, why would the "flag carrier" be an exception?

South African Airways will not present any financial results for the 2017/18 year to the Parliament, as required by law, as it’s "technically" bankrupt, and continues to burn through cash. Sources say that SAA is now considering selling off some of its businesses to help raise funds after banks have refused to lend it any more money – and its debt ballooned to US$206.4 million more than its assets at end July 2018.

Wayward fire tender water cannon at Dubai DXB causes Saudia jet's emergency escape chute to deploy (port side, behind the wing). The 'salute' was to commemorate the 88th birthday of Saudi Arabia.

Boeing (US) and Adient (Germany) launch new company to design and build aeroplane seats.
16th January 2018 - Boeing and Adient today announced the formation of Adient Aerospace, a joint venture that will develop, manufacture and sell a portfolio of seating products to airlines and aircraft leasing companies. The seats will be available for installation on new aeroplanes and as retrofit configurations for aircraft produced by Boeing and other commercial aeroplane manufacturers. The joint venture between Boeing, the world’s largest aerospace company, and Adient, the global leader in automotive seating, addresses the aviation industry’s needs for more capacity in the seating category, superior quality and reliable on-time performance. Adient Aerospace will benefit from the world-class engineering teams and innovative cultures at both companies, as well as shared expertise in managing complex, global supply chains.

“Seats have been a persistent challenge for our customers, the industry and Boeing, and we are taking action to help address constraints in the market. Adient Aerospace will leverage Boeing’s industry leadership and deep understanding of customer needs and technical requirements, to provide a superior seating product for airlines and passengers around the world,” said Kevin Schemm, senior vice president of Supply Chain Management, Finance & Business Operations and chief financial officer for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “This joint venture supports Boeing’s vertical integration strategy to develop in-house capabilities and depth in key areas to offer better products, grow services and generate higher lifecycle value.” “Adient has a strong set of transferable competencies that will offer a unique opportunity to create value for our company and for Boeing, our shareholders and the broader commercial aircraft market,” said Adient chairman and CEO Bruce McDonald. “To enhance the customer experience for passengers, airlines and commercial aeroplane manufacturers, we will apply our unmatched expertise for comfort and craftsmanship along with our reputation for operational excellence.”

Adient Aerospace’s operational headquarters, technology centre and initial production plant will be located in Kaiserslautern, Germany, near Frankfurt. The joint venture’s initial customer service centre will be based in Seattle, Washington. Adient Aerospace aftermarket spare parts distribution will be performed exclusively through Aviall, a wholly owned subsidiary of Boeing. Adient is the majority stakeholder in the new company (50.01 percent share) and expects the joint venture to be included in its consolidated financial statements. Boeing (as 49.99 percent partner) will receive a proportionate share of the earnings and cash flow. Both will have representation on Adient Aerospace’s board of directors. Industry analysts forecast the commercial aircraft seating market to grow from approximately $4.5 billion in 2017 to $6 billion by 2026.

08th October 2018: European Commission clears the creation of a joint venture by Boeing and Adient for the production of aircraft seating.
The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the creation of a joint venture by Boeing and Adient, both of the US. The joint venture will design, develop, manufacture and sell seats for commercial aircraft. Boeing designs, manufactures and sells commercial aircraft and defence, space and security systems. Adient designs, manufactures and markets a full range of seating systems and components for passenger cars, commercial vehicles and light trucks. The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would raise no competition concerns. First, the overlaps between the companies' activities are limited: Boeing does not manufacture but only resells aircraft seats on a minority of its aircrafts, while Adient is not active in the production of aircraft seating. Second, the Commission found that despite Boeing's strong position in the manufacturing of large commercial aircraft, the transaction is unlikely to lead to competing aircraft seat suppliers being shut out from the market. The market in commercial aircraft seating is currently characterised by the presence of three large players and the transaction will lead to the creation of a new entrant in that market. The transaction was examined under the normal merger review procedure.

Let's hope that this joint venture will improve the comfort of the seats in Boeing aircraft, known to be narrower than on any Airbus. Of course, if Boeing doesn't make their aircraft wider, it will be difficult to make the seats wider :)

It's about time to acknowledge that these seats are mostly challenging for the customers!

I may be wrong but I wonder wether the diameter of the body of the Boeing aircraft isn't limited by the available width of the railcars they use to move them from 1 factory to another (assembly line) in the Seattle area.
(You can see 2 of them in that typical greenish color if you look at their Renton factory on Google Maps.)

A small plane going from Goetsenhoven (EBTN) to Zwartberg (EBZW) misidentified the destination airport and landed at Kleine Brogel Air Base (EBBL), about 17 km north of their intended destination. The occupants were released after interrogation, but the plane is still held at EBBL: http://www.standaard.be/cnt/dmf20181015_03846602

There is an update for a story that was published on the homepage (18th July 2017) and that was discussed here quite often: “State aid: EU Commission finds Belgian support to three airlines incompatible with EU rules”

On 15/10/2018, the complete file has been published in the EU’s Official Journal:

European Commission clears the acquisition of control over Avolon by ORIX Aviation Systems and Bohai
The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the acquisition of joint control over Avolon by ORIX Aviation Systems ("OAS"), both of Ireland and by Bohai of China. Avolon is a subsidiary of Bohai and is active in aircraft leasing services. OAS is an investor aircraft and asset manager. It belongs to ORIX Corporation, a Japanese financial services group with a diverse portfolio of financial services. Bohai is a leasing group, which belongs to HNA Group, a Chinese conglomerate encompassing core divisions of aviation, holdings, capital, tourism and logistics. The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would raise no competition concerns as the companies' shares of the markets in which Avolon is active would remain limited. The transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure. More information is available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number M.9103.
