British Airways plane completes 6,000 mile 'flight to nowhere' from Heathrow after u-turn due to minor fault

The BA flight from Heathrow to Tokyo took off at 12:00 noon yesterday (Thursday) and turned back half-way over northern Siberia to return to Heathrow, where the passengers landed at midnight, 12 hours and 6,000 miles after having left the airport.

A spokesman for BA said that a "minor technical fault" was to blame for the return to Heathrow.

In a statement, the airline said: "Our pilot returned to Heathrow after a routing change by air traffic control significantly lengthened the flight time."

BA could be hit with a bill of up to £300,000, as it is expected to pay hundreds of pounds as compensation to the passengers on board and those in Japan who were due to catch the plane’s return flight.

It was a failure of the airconditioning:

This morning, a Royal Air Force (U.K.) BAe146 from Northolt RAF Base to Brussels Airport diverted to Luton for a technical issue. On board: 16 pax, including Boris Johnson, the newly-appointed Foreign Secretary. Luton runway was blocked for half an hour, the BBC reports. Johnson will now be too late for his "informal dinner with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini".

Several planes were diverted from Lisbon to Porto and Faro after a terror scare at Lisbon airport yesterday evening (Saturday). The airport was shut for half an hour after some passengers of a plane from Algeria tried to escape immigration controls by forcing an emergency exit.

Fog, fog, fog.

Lovely British summer weather, isn't it?

Current TAF looks promising.
TAF: EGJJ 071356Z 0715/0724 24012KT 0200 -DZ FG OVC000 BECMG 0715/0718 4000 BR BKN002 BECMG 0718/0720 9999 NSW SCT008

They should be able to handle Mist (BR) thanks to the Brexit, but there is no Fogxit planned so have to wait...

Emirates A380 flight EK225 from DXB to SFO made a medical diversion to CPH. Afterwards it took off to ... JFK! And it will thus operate a US domestic flight from JFK to SFO. With a big delay!

Man from Italy dies on Air France flight before it lands in Labrador

Police say a man from Italy died on board an Air France plane before it landed in Labrador after being diverted there after midnight.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police say the flight was headed to France when a passenger became ill and the on-board crew notified airport officials in Happy Valley-Goose Bay about a suspected medical emergency.

Police and paramedics met the plane, but say the man who was travelling with family passed away prior to landing.

Source: CTV news

Flight was AF673 from MSP to CDG (Airbus A340-300) on 25/08/2016. It arrived at CDG with a delay of 3 hours.
