Re: Repositioning of BRU operations to other airports after attacks

Post by MHG »

At LGG (and SN on a wider scale) I think they are very happy to have the "new" Terminal which can handle significantly more Passengers than the old one.
Imagine this whole operation would have to be handled in the old terminal ...

Only one thing makes me wonder: why are there only a few JAF flights moved to OST (not thinking of SN, though) ?
At least some airlines that operate small aircraft and/or only one flight or less a day to BRU could use OST.
Those operators do not have connex traffic anyways and the terminal at OST should be able to handle that traffic.

Pity that Airline Route doesn't show the shuttle flights between ANR/LGG and FRA/ZRH. Neither the LGG-FIH flights.

And the first Toronto flight will be operated from ZRH on Sunday 27 as SN1451.

Very impressive performance by SN people! But all these transfers must cost a fortune!

I'm typing this, sitting on the floor at the gate of LGG. The situation at the check-in desks and security check is very chaotic, to say the least. Flights are called one by one, but nevertheless, people who's flight has not been called make it to the front of the queue....

My flight to Linate is 1,5 hours delayed, but we'll get there eventually.

etairfly and Thomas Cook will now operate from the regional airports until Friday, April 1.
IMO a part of the BRU- flights will stay in the regional airports even after April 1st.
When reopening,BRU might not be able to handle all the traffic properly the first weeks/months.
Also passengers might prefer to travel through the regional airports in order to avoid BRU.
iI think this will become a point to be taken into account by travelagencies and airlines.

Air Malta continues operating to/from the rather distant airport of DUS until BRU reopens.

How badly does this affect the SN longhaul flights?
How is SN handling the O&D to/from BRU, ie the highest yielding pax?
How do they get to/from ZRH?
Are the connections on LX smooth or is there a lack of capacity?
Are the flights running anywhere near 50% load factor?

How are others dealing with it, eg EK, TK, QR, the US flights?

We didn't talk about CRL much, but they are apparently suffering too.
Sunday they expect 100 flights for 40.000 people.

Some news from Alitalia: I wonder why it only affected the LIN flight...
2:00 pm update, March 25

Alitalia was forced to cancel its flights between Milan Linate and Liege airports due to a security failure on luggage system at the Belgian airport.

The Company has immediately set up re-routing procedures for its passengers booked on flights to/from Milan which have been rebooked on flights to/from Rome. This plan remains effective until further update.

We apologized for the inconvenience that was not caused by the Company's actions.
Alitalia will strengthen efforts to provide all necessary assistance to passengers affected by the closure of Brussels Zaventem airport following the terrorist attacks in Brussels.
The Company has moved its flights originally scheduled to and from the Belgian capital to Liege (a Belgian town south-east of Brussels), providing special flights to and from Rome and Milan. An organizational effort aimed at ensuring flight connections between Italy and Belgium, in order to provide return flights to all passengers wishing to return to Italy and to all those who need to travel to Belgium.
Alitalia staff usually based in Brussels will be present at the Liege airport to provide assistance to passengers.
Alitalia will keep travelers informed with updates about its flight status information to and from Brussels both on its website and social media platforms. Information are available also through special line: 800650055 from Italy (toll free number) and 025511122 for passengers calling from abroad.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PASSENGERS BOOKED ON FLIGHTS FROM/TO BRUSSELS

If you hold a confirmed reservation and a ticket purchased before 22nd March, to fly with Alitalia to/from Brussels, we inform you that, within the next seven days (from 22nd March to 3rd April, 2016), you can request:

FULL TICKET REFUND without any penalty of the completely/partially unused ticket, only if your flight has been cancelled or the delay in departure is equal or more than 5 hours. Refund will be issued in the original form of payment.

RE-BOOKING without penalty on Alitalia’s operated flights or codesharing flights with partner airlines, in the same booking class or in the first available one. The reservation must be changed not later than Sunday, 3 April and travel must be completed within one week or within ticket validity. The original duration of stay will be preserved.

RE-ROUTING without penalty on Alitalia’s operated flights or codesharing flights with partner airlines, in the same booking class or in the first available one. The travel must be completed via an intermediate airport, with the same origin and destination, or to/from following alternate airports: Dusseldorf, Paris (Charles de Gaulle) and Amsterdam. Guests are required to provide their own transport between alternate airports and Brussels.
The reservation must be changed not later than Sunday, 3 April and travel must be completed within one week or within ticket validity. The original duration of stay will be preserved.

Interesting article on how Antwerp-airport is coping with the extra volumes. (see link)
In an interview Marcel Buelens ,CEO explains both ANR and OST are able to deal well with the extra flights, although some improvisation was clearly needed.
He also states they deliberately opted not to take too many extra flights in ANR and OST to have some 'room to manoever'.
LGG is running into trouble by accepting +50 extra flights,he thinks.
And there is also the hope in ANR and OST that when doing things properly, that could lead to some extra business in future...

It looks like LGG took a real challenge indeed.
on RTBF yesterday, Bernard Gustin thanked LGG and the walloon gov for their flexibility. It's bit gusty to say something like "Hun ogen zijn vrees ik wat groter dan hun maag", when somebody offers help.
there is also the hope in ANR and OST that when doing things properly, that could lead to some extra business in future...
That's for every business, indeed.
