2016 Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL/EBCI) latest news

Post by sn26567 »

CNN has just published the list of the most punctual airlines and airports for 2015, based on OAG data.

Not surprisingly, the Japanese airports and airlines score very well in that ranking.

A nice surprise is to see CRL as number 2, right behind Osaka, for the small airports. Congratulations!

1. Osaka Itami, Japan (93.85%)
2. Brussels South Charleroi, Belgium (93.51%)
3. Panama Tocumen International (92.55%)
4. Stavanger, Norway (91.15%)
5. Bergen, Norway (90.91%)
6. Cologne Bonn, Germany (90.42%)
7. Adelaide, Australia (90.18%)
8. Warsaw (89.87)
9. Bristol, England (88.64%)
10. Hannover, Germany (88.59%)

The construction works of Terminal 2 will start mid-March to be completed by year end at a cost of 13.3 million euros (less than the 15-20 million that had been forecast).

Wasn't this already announced in their PR of last month, when they gave an overview of their Belgian operations? They seem to have announced it twice and unsimultaneously (at both ends).

The government of Wallonia wants to buy back the 27% of Charleroi airport in the hands of the private Italian Save consortium. The intention is to resell it to an interested party. Aéroports de Paris, which owns 25% of Liège Airport, could be interested in buying that share.

Save is in a hurry to get out (because the lack of dividends) and the Government takes over for the time to find a new investor.

Good news indeed, but CRL is not a new route from PRG.

The Walloon Region does not have enough money to fund the extension of the runway of the airport of Charleroi. This extension to 3200 meters has yet been confirmed in the Declaration of General Policy of the current Walloon government.

But Sowaer, the Walloon company that manages the airport, has not received all of the expected money: fifteen million euros instead of the thirty necessary. Jean-Jacques Cloquet, the CEO of BSCA, is still confident. "Given the potential of Charleroi airport, I think the government will do everything to do it, because this is the future for the next 20 years of the airport. I remain confident but also as CEO, I am convinced that we must do it! "

Does anyone have a graphic/illustration of the planned terminal extension that they could share?

Secondly, does anyone know if the now shelved masterplan is publicly available somewhere? I have searched the usual sources with no result.

Why would you need a longer track ? To fly intercontinental ?

Yes, indeed! And also to accommodate larger aircraft.

It's not that simple, unfortunately.

The current runway can be performance limiting in some cases (due to the Church which is an obstacle in the axis of RWY25). Current operations with 737NG's or A320's are not really limited in most of the conditions, but the 737CL was in the past (that's why Jet4you wanted the short hop to LGG initially). Using RWY07 was a possibility (much less limiting thanks to the lack of obstacles in that direction), but it was of course not always possible (i.e. In case of tailwind beyond aircraft limitations) and could also cause delay when RWY25 was in use (which is most of the time the case).

RWY25 still requires high take-off thrust (again due to the obstacles and not due to runway length only), that means more costs related to engine maintenance AND more noise, of course. Flights close to Max Take-Off Weight can also be limited.

Montego Bay also has a short runway (around the same as in CRL) but accepts a 787 close to Max TOW without any problem. A perfect example to explain basic performance to people who have no clue of how it works.

It all depends on the type of aircraft you use, and bigger doesn't necessarily mean more limiting, in contradiction to what many people think.

I doubt the main idea of CRL is to accomodate heavy aircrafts... Their current structure is not really made for that (definitely the current apron).

thanks for the explanation. Didn't know for the church. i have a question.... ( depending of the weather of course ) With the current runway, is it possible for a 787 or 767 to fly TATL ( with penality of course )
The difference with montega bay is the elevation.
thanks

Thanks for the explanation indeed, very interesting.
I heard about he chruch story in the past, but I didn't know it was that critical, planes are very high already when passing that point.
It's a big "funny" to think a plane could be so low at the end of the track.

So everybody is now thinking, let's get rid of the church ?
Yes, it has been asked, in 2014 already:
