Antwerp airport registers robust passenger growth

Last year, the airport of Antwerp handled 221,155 passengers, an increase of 82 percent compared to 2014. here were quite some new routes, and with JetairFly the airport received for the first time in years larger aircraft.

The passenger growth is spectacular in comparison with 2014, but that year was a particularly weak year for Deurne.

2015 was a very eventful year for Antwerp Airport, with the advent of larger passenger aircraft such as Jetairfly and the start of TakeAir, a completely new concept where one can fly multiple times to Zurich with a monthly subscription.

The parking spaces at the airport are now paying, and the renovation of the outdated airport building started.

There is also bad news. VLM Airlines deletes this spring routes to Geneva and Birmingham, but routes to Hamburg and Southampton are retained temporarily. The company flies also several times a day to London City on behalf of CityJet.

VLM will stop flying ANR-GVA at the end of this week, but "another" company will take over the route in mid-march. But the article doesn't say which one...

Etihad regional?

Or OS for LX?? They fly a few routes from GVA on behalf of LX, that would be FANTASTIC!

But it would be a bit of a shame if a "foreign" airline would manage to make the route work (economically) where the "based" VLM could not.

a foreign airline will probably know how to publicize the route, and feed to and from other routes in its network. VLM never made an effort in Antwerp. They assumed that a news bulletin on GvA is sufficient.. and stickers on 2 cars..add to that their prehistoric booking engine, that does not even accept all major credit cards.. that was a real lost opportunity for them.
There is a huge banner of Icelandair outside the Museum of fine arts in Antwerp these days, announcing their new route to Iceland and beyond, FROM BRU!! VLM could have done something similar all around the city.. they could have teamed up with morning programs on popular radio stations, targeting all the (Ant-BRU) commuters stuck in traffic!!! These were discussed on previous threads, anyway... Wishing the new airline luck on the GVA-ANR route. Hopefully, they will last longer than a year..

Groen (a leftist Belgian political party) has published the number of complaints about Antwerp Airport in 2015. Source for the numbers is a reply from the Flemish Department of Transport.

In 2014, 36 people complained.
In 2015, 504 people complained.

Groen points to Jetairfly's new flights out of Antwerp.

Reply Antwerp Airport on ATV: ...we're talking here about just 14 flights a week by Jetairfly... We've invited the mayors of the surrounding towns... We've invited the complainants to discuss the issue, and some even didn't react to our invitation...

Flemish member of Parliament Annick De Ridder: ...Groen has actively searched for complainants and they have distributed ready-to-send complaint forms... 5% of the complaints about Jetairfly Antwerp are actually night flights to/from Brussels Airport, flying above ANR-region...

Anyway, the story gets a lot of press coverage in local and regional media:

It will be a foreign company, a French one as far I heard.

Antwerp Airport has also a fanclub it seems.
See below link.

-ANR-GVA: VLM will stop, but route will be taken over by a new company as from 14 March 2016.
-ANR-BHX: another airline could take over the route after VLM has stopped this one.
-4 new destinations as from september 2016 for ANR
-EGIS is 'talking' on new routes with 28 airlines ,combined for ANR and OST.
-ANR Shooting for 270.000 PAX this year.
-Planning for 500.000 Pax within a few years.
-ANR-airport will put online a new complaint form and aims to give feedback within 48 hours after posting.

I was thinking among the same lines at first, as they already have a (small) presence at Geneva. But then again, it would be an odd addition to their route network for sure. As it stands, all of their flights start or end in France and their operations at GVA seem to be seasonal and geared towards holidaymakers. Also, I'm not sure they have the right size of planes nor can they offer any connections on either end. Not going to make a prediction here, but I really don't see HOP doing this.

Who then? Well, there is this small company called Twin Jet. They fly Beechcraft 1900's (19 seats, much easier to fill on smaller routes) and have a somewhat... eccentric route map (reminds me of VLM's actually :)). They have no presence at all in Geneva and can equally offer nothing in terms of connections, but they don't really seem to bother with those in their business model. It's all very much point-to-point, offering a bunch of routes in France and between France and either Italy, Switzerland (Zurich) or Germany. However, they are starting up a new domestic route in Germany soon, flying between Bremen and Nuremberg - both wholly detached from the rest of their network. I'm basically saying here that they're clearly willing to start a new route by adding two completely new dots to their route map and as such... anything is possible :)

Who ever that new airline may be: they start the route within one month, and still no sales??? Must be an airline with a lot of cash, allowing them to start up a new route with a very low load factor.

Not to worry, as this 'new' company is in fact take Air already flying to Zurich and soon also to Geneva. As you know, they only fly a plane when there is a booking. So they are very flexible and do not need to have a full airplane every day. Too bad Antwerp Airport claims the flight will just go on, because it's totally different idea then VLM.
