Some highlights:
Just 155 were built, last one almost a decade ago.
After Delta struck a deal to take 88 from Southwest to replace 50 seaters, other airlines took on the same strategy in the wake of durably lower oil prices and the more attractive cabin lay out of the plane.
Result is a 17% increase in resale value, with leasing rates soaring even 22% as there is now a real shortage of the plane on the second band market, with Qantas and Volotea looking to add up to 20 more, but not finding them.
Amazing.

Then why is SAS' Finnish subsidiary Blue1 trying to offload them?

Maybe that has to do with its size?
It a plane for 100 people, maybe they think its too small for them?
By the above article, it will not find it hard to find interested takers at a good price.

Re: 717, from flop to most sought after aircraft!
If only 155 were built, it makes me think that Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas only to kill one competitor. The 717 (formerly named MD-95) was a serious competitor of their smaller 737s (-500 and later -600). And the MD-11 was making shadow to their 747. Hence...

Re: 717, from flop to most sought after aircraft!
The MD90's were also competition for the B737. But the reason the B717 is so popular is because they are relatively cheap to lease as they are niche aircraft compared to aircraft like the CRJ, Ejets, Fokkers. They are also cheaper to maintain than the Avro's. If Boeing would launch a line of newbuilds, they wouldn't make it past the brochures.
Re: 717, from flop to most sought after aircraft!
Why limit the search to the 155 717's? There are also 117 MD95"s build. Quite a few of those are stored. Though I don't know in what condition...

Re: 717, from flop to most sought after aircraft!
They are, but the MD-95s were built by McDonnell-Douglas before the take-over by Boeing, which changed the name to Boeing 717 (much earlier, the 717 should have been the military version of the 707, but the name was never adopted, hence it could be recycles for the MD-95).Stij wrote:Aren't those the same?

Not a single MD-95 was ever built under that name.

In fact, there were 117 MD-90s built if I'm correct

I love the Boeing 717
Re: 717, from flop to most sought after aircraft!
Yes, my bad...
Years ago, I did a ramp servicing on what I remembered to be a MD95, but checked it, and it was a MD90, hence my confusion. Sri for that.
