easyJet in 2015

Post by sn26567 »

I was wondering why easyJet, a scheduled carrier with a base in Brussels, still had not its own topic in this forum. Let's repair this omission.

easyJet flies to Paris CDG. To bring its passengers from the city to this airport, it has organised an easyBus, which costs only 2 euros one way: a bargain!

Here is a picture of that bus.

I like what's written on the side of the bus (even knowing that FR doesn't fly to CDG).

No question they are flying to BRU, but are they having a base at the airport ? Do not believe they are basing aircraft in BRU at the moment. But could be wrong.

That is actually a photo of one of their London buses which is probably why it says that Ryanair passengers are also welcome as both Easyjet and Ryanair fly into Gatwick, Luton and Stansted.

They don't have a base indeed, but it's just a formality to most people whether or not their planes actually overnight in BRU: I don't know if there's any other difference between Ryanair (which has a base at BRU) and easyjet (which hasn't one): both are foreign airlines, serving routes from BRU to 3rd countries, staffed predominantly with foreign crew, so based on their significant operations at BRU, they definitely deserve a topic of their own here too. :)

My mistake if I told that Brussels is an easyJet base. Indeed, all the planes that fly from Brussels come from other bases. Nevertheless, Brussels is and remains an important destination for easyJet.

EasyJet, which flies exclusively with A319s and A320s, is examining the potential of the A321 but has no plans to switch current orders.

EasyJet's share price has tumbled despite investors seeing profits in the first six months of its financial year for the first time in a decade.
Its results for the six months to 31 March showed a profit before tax of £7m, compared with a loss of £53m in the same period last year.
EasyJet confirmed the timing of Easter boosted its revenue and profits as sales fell inside the reporting period.
Revenue grew by 3.8% to almost £1.8bn while it made an average profit of 21p per seat, compared with a £1.70 loss in 2013/14.
The airline said falling fuel bills were a factor but it warned on its outlook, with summer bookings flat and strikes by air traffic controllers in France hitting current revenues.

EasyJet Falls After French Strike, Easter Timing Weigh on Sales

(Bloomberg) -- EasyJet Plc dropped the most since 2012 after Europe’s second-biggest discount carrier said strikes in France and the timing of the Easter holiday will weigh on third-quarter earnings.

Walk-outs by French air traffic controllers caused the cancellation of more than 600 flights in April, costing about 25 million pounds ($39 million), and will contribute to a decline in revenue per seat of about 3 percent, EasyJet said.

The threat of strike action, originally scheduled in March and then delayed following the crash of the Germanwings plane in France that month, in addition to the walk-out, weighed on bookings through April, EasyJet Chief Executive Officer Carolyn McCall said in a telephone interview. The crash itself was also a contributing factor, though the incident’s precise effect on demand is harder to calculate, she said.
“April is very much a one-off,” the executive said. “The revenue-per-seat effect was all about disruption, it’s not a permanent state of affairs.”

Profit before tax in the fiscal first half through March 31 was 7 million pounds, compared with a loss of 53 million pounds a year earlier, the Luton, England-based airline said in a statement today. It was the airline’s first winter profit in more than a decade.

EasyJet has become the latest airline to commit to a higher-density Airbus A320 layout with the decision to fit 186 seats in the type.
All new A320s delivered from May 2016 will be fitted with 186 seats.
EasyJet also says that it will retrofit its current A320s with the higher seat-count from winter next year. This retrofit will be completed by the summer of 2018.
The layout will result in a cost-per-seat saving of 2% over the 180-seat version.

EasyJet shares indeed dropped some 10% today. But apart from the above reasons (like the French ATC strike), there was a general malaise in London today, with a drop of 2 or 3,5% for other carriers also.

"...The FTSE 100 fell 1.4%, the biggest percentage decline since late March as shares of only 10 companies on the index finished higher... The FTSE 100 fell alongside the Stoxx Europe 600 SXXP, -1.31%, which lost as much as 2.1% intraday. In addition to Greece’s bleak financial situation, stocks also wrestled with a renewed selloff in global bonds, driving yields higher... The “extent of the bond market selloff is surprising,” as the European Central Bank “has only just started its colossal bond-buying program, which should keep yields under extreme pressure for another 1.5 years at least,” said Fawad Razaqzada, technical analyst at Forex.com, in a note. “Indeed, we are of the view that bond yields will probably head back lower soon, and this in turn may result in a rebound in European stocks... U.K. stocks dropped by the most in six weeks Tuesday, in step with a selloff across European equities as bond prices dropped and as Greece’s debt crisis talks reach a crucial point..."

The Dutch investors site IEX.Nl also isn't panicking today: "between 2010 and 2014, EasyJet shares rose 334%".

Questor (The Telegraph U.K.) also advised today not to sell EasyJet shares, despite today's red:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/mark ... lence.html

Conclusion: yes, despite announcing better results ("it was the airline’s first winter profit in more than a decade") it was a terrible day for EasyJet. But their forecast looks great, as is it for all Low Costs.

Hi all,

I am curious how they are doing at BRU. They have not developed spectacularly over the past years, yet they are still there. However, I have no clue about the number of pax flown on them in e.g. 2014?
Did they feel the coming of Ryanair and Vueling, or do they have a quite stable / unique customer base?

Regards,
Danny

The easyJet destinations at BRU don't compete with FR or VY. And they seem to be doing quite well et BRU. I took 4 flights with them recently and the load factors were above 80% on each flight (3 A319s and 1 A320).

EasyJet has officially asked the Israeli authorities for permission to operate flights between Tel Aviv and Amsterdam, reports "Yediot Ahronot." It is understood that it wants to launch the route in the winter.
EasyJet Israel commercial manager Neil Slaven said at the time that market research conducted in Israel indicated the need for a route between Tel Aviv and Amsterdam.
EasyJet’s already operates nine routes from Ben Gurion airport and will fly more than half a million passengers into and out of Israel in 2015 on 37 weekly departures to London (Gatwick), London (Luton), Manchester, Geneva, Basel, Rome, Milan, Berlin, and Paris.

EasyJet has carried out a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle)-based aircraft ground inspection, deploying new technology in a situation usually involving humans.
According to airline officials, the results obtained underline that pre-programmed UAVs have the potential to reduce aircraft inspection times. As a result, a whole fleet of aircraft-inspecting drones will be inaugurated in months ahead.

“The use of these emerging technologies frees up our engineering and digital teams to enable them to undertake more skilled tasks, keeping our costs down which in turn keeps our fares low, helps minimise delays and ensures that we maintain our industry leading punctuality for our passengers”, engineering head Ian Davies says of easyJet’s drone inspection programme.

EasyJet disclosed details of another trial, this involving 3D-printed aircraft parts. The components involved will include seats’ arm rests and, again, the aim is to see if time savings can be made. For the future, the carrier intends to draw on 3D printing for larger projects, such as next-gen engine fan blades.

“EasyJet has always been pioneering”, comments Carolyn McCall, chief executive.

Since yesterday, easyJet now fly from Luxemburg to Porto thrice weekly, in competition with TAP and Luxair.
It's its fourth destination from Luxemburg, after Lisbon, London Gatwick and Milan.

EasyJet, Europe’s leading airline, has today announced an innovation initiative with Airbus to study fault prognosis capabilities to enhance Airbus’ prognostics maintenance eSolutions and services.

Airbus’ solutions for prognostics maintenance include services and eSolutions which can receive real-time information from aircraft systems via the ACARS messaging system. This information is then analysed, with fault predictions sent to airlines’ operations teams so they can use it to troubleshoot technical faults as soon as the plane lands or schedule the work into its regular maintenance.

As part of the initiative, easyJet and Airbus will study enhanced prognostics capabilities using an extended repository in which to collate data from the worldwide in-service A320 fleet, from easyJet’s fleet and also from Airbus’ own operational benchmark analyses. The resultant ‘data lake’ will subsequently be processed using innovative algorithms.

Overall, the enhanced prognostic capabilities would benefit airlines by further enabling their engineering departments to plan for component replacements before issues arise, and identify possible actions to improve fleet operational performance and decrease maintenance cost.

EasyJet plans to introduce a new service to assist passengers stranded by an evening flight cancellation that leaves them with no way to get to their destination that night.

From the end of July, easyJet’s version of the popular Flight Tracker app will allow passengers signed up for the service to press a button marked “Do you need a bed for the night?”

If the passenger presses it, the app will find a hotel room in the locality that will be pre-paid by easyJet, together with information such as directions to the hotel, whether there is a shuttle bus from the airport and what time dinner is served.
