According to the information readily available, that's an overstatement. The engine didn't fail, the crew shut it down. This may seem pedantic, but there is a difference between the two.

Brussels Airlines has announced that the engine stalled, and that investigation showed that it was not caused by a bird strike.

Update on Aviation Herald:

A Brussels Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration OO-SSU performing flight SN-3201 from Brussels (Belgium) to Venice (Italy) with 124 people on board, was climbing out of Brussels' runway 25R when the left hand engine (CFM56) stalled prompting the crew to level off at FL080, shut the engine down and return to Brussels for a safe landing on runway 25R about 45 minutes after departure. A passenger reported there was a huge bang from the engine, then the aircraft levelled off and returned to Brussels.

The airline initially reported an engine ingested a bird and received damage prompting the shut down of the engine but later amended that inspection of the engine did not reveal evidence of a bird strike. The exact cause of the engine failure is being investigated.

SN2836 (OO-SSG) from Moscow is being diverted to Berlin at this moment. Does anyone know the reason?

No circling around; it went straight in.

OO-SSG was about one hour on the ground in Berlin (TXL) and then continued to BRU.

My guess: a medical divertion.

Don't know if this is the right topic, but apparently threads are being made on twitter against Brussels Airport (and Schiphol) after yesterdays attacks at Paris.

Around 14h/15h, there was one thread indeed at Amsterdam, against Air France flight AF-1741 AMS-CDG (F-GTAT). The aircraft was searched, and the A321 took of around 18h00, with 3 hours delay.

That's right. But little after, the same Twitter account threatened with attacks on BRU and AMS as well, seperately from the AF1741-thread...

DL-162 Minneapolis-Amsterdam has just diverted to Brussels. At this very moment, stormy weather near Amsterdam is causing some delays and a few divertions.

DL-162 (A330-300 N816NW) landed in BRU about one hour after going into hold above the North Sea:

According to the Dutch press, it is a 16-year old boy from Rotterdam that probably threatened Brussels Airport and Amsterdam Schiphol. I guess he or his parents will feel the pinch!

Coming back from Berlin SXF tonight around 21:00, I saw a United wide-body (not sure from far away in the dark whether it was a 767 or a 777) on the tarmac. Any problem with one of the United flights today?

Do I really have to give the answer to my own questions?

N227UA (Boeing 777-200ER) is in Brussels since 16 November, after having flown flight UA950 from Washington IAD. One of its engines was in bad shape and had to be replaced. A fresh engine came from San Francisco on board of a Kalitta 747 and is being installed today.

Did it "feel unwell" in flight or did something happen on the ground at BRU like eating FOD or getting up close and personal with some GSE?

So that's the reason why the B742 was here. Thanks for the information!

Incident: Brussels A319 at Brussels on Nov 4th 2015, engine shut down in flight

By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, Nov 5th 2015 12:10Z, last updated Thursday, Nov 19th 2015 14:41Z

A replacement A319-100 registration OO-SSK reached Venice with a delay of 3 hours.

On Nov 19th 2015 the French BEA reported in their weekly bulletin that the crew heard a loud noise and observed an abrupt yaw of the aircraft while climbing through about FL060 having been cleared to climb to FL240. The crew performed the ECAM actions, declared PAN, entered a hold for 15 minutes and returned to Brussels. Belgium's AIB is investigating the occurrence rated an incident.

On 17 November, on Jetairfly flight TB2660 from Tel Aviv to Brussels, a 3-month old baby suddenly stopped breathing. The crew initiated artificial respiration and applied oxygen to the baby. The pilot diverted the flight to Rhodes for an emergency landing due to medical reasons; the baby was taken by an ambulance to a hospital and survived.

The flight arrived in Brussels with a 3-hr delay.

The OCAM has decided to push the cursor up , believing the danger to be at 4 on a scale of 4 in the Brussels region , the rest of the country remains at level 3 .
Among the recommendations avoid places with high concentrations of people in the Brussels region ( concerts , major events , stations and airports, public transport , ...)

Les passagers pourront prendre leur avion normalement, le niveau d’alerte reste au niveau 3 à l’aéroport de Zaventem. Les parking Kiss&Fly est inaccessible aux usagers.
IF IT AIN'T BOEING, I'M NOT GOING.
