Re: Russia threatens to ban all Western airlines

A new list of sanctions has been adopted last Monday. Publication however has been postponed, probably because the EU Commission was hoping that the first report from the Dutch Safety Board on Tuesday would reveal Russian complicity. The report failed to do so.

Some newspapers report that a new discussion at the EU about these new sanctions is set for tonight. With Timmermans (NL) becoming the first EU vice-president, there can be little doubt that the new sanctions will go on. As from day one, Timmermans is convinced that Russia has shot down MH17.

great for Air Serbia. They will profit from the boycott adnd become a transporter between EU and Russia. Good for them, bad for us :x
Serbia received large orders from Russia to compensate the ban on fruit imports from EU especially Belgium.

If the mutual bans and boycots continue, Serbia will profit from it.
Turkey is that other country that rides now also on that wave of unexpected exports towards Russia.
And it is in a similar game as Serbia to become a EU partner.
Well... why become a EU partner if the implactions are so high?

Next: Scotland, if it becomes independant

So now we'll see whether Russia will keep its stance and ban overflights.
The EU is playing a game, probably hoping that Russia will not enact its threats.
But they surely know that Putin will enact them. He's not a man to make empty threats.

Interesting times.
I'm off to buy some options.
If we can't do anything about it, we might as well make money on it. 8-)

Would be a disaster for Finnair. 40 Percent of its passenger traffic is between Helsinki and the Far East.

Russia can play it smart here.
What I think would be the best solution is if instead of completely banning western airlines, Russia increases Siberia overflight royalties to the same amount as it would cost to make the detour, ie to more or less 30.000$ per flight (depending on the aircraft type).

This has the following advantages:

-Russia will earn more revenue, hence compensating the financial impact of the EU sanctions
-the environmental impact will be zero or even positive as airlines will think of ways to rationalise capacity and cancel flights that do not justify the higher cost of neither the detour or the higher royalties
-airlines can maintain their schedules and compensate the higher royalties partly by increasing their fares
-airlines don't need to swap the aircraft for longer-range equipment
-AY will be saved as the royalties can be calculated for normal detours through Western-Eruopean hubs. This reduces the impact to them. In addition, they can continue operating A330's where they are within range instead of having to switch to heavier aircraft
-it would be much more difficult for the EU to justify sanctioning this: after all Russia can charge whatever they want for the overflight of their territory, but the EU can't charge different Eurocontrol fees to SU, just because the respective governments are arguing.

The financial impact falls back on our economies and on us. It makes sense.
