Quick evolution: Ethiopian Airlines is in early talks with the Democratic Republic of the Congo to launch a new national airline. Kinshasa would hold 51% of the shares against 49% for Ethiopian.

In the meantime, Kenya Airways will lease two E190s to Congo Airways, following the start of a cargo codeshare partnership between the two carriers.

Isn't Congo Airways no longer good enough? Anyway, Air Congo is to be set up by the DRC government soon, in a joint venture with Ethiopian Airlines. The carrier, owned 51% by the DRC and 49% by Ethiopian Airlines, will start with seven planes provided by Ethiopian.

Congo Airways plans to reach a fleet of ten aircraft to meet domestic demand of 40%. Delivery of the first of four E2s arrives in May 2022, with ACC Aviation (UK) already mandated to organise the financing under sale/leaseback.

DRC: the leasing contract between Congo Airways and Kenya Airways will not be renewed, the Kenyan company recovers its planes

The leasing contract between Kenya Airways and Congo Airways will not be renewed. It was for a period of six months, reports the Congolese company. This wait was six months renewable and concerned two Embraer E190 aircraft. It updated the Memorandum of Understanding between Kenya Airways and Congo Airways signed in April 2021 in Kinshasa and attested by the President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta and the President of the DRC Félix Tshisekedi.

Congo Airways evokes "strictly operational reasons" to explain the withdrawal of Kenya Airways planes.

“Furthermore, the company reassures its kind customers that this fact will have no impact on the continuity of its services. Your national airline also informs you that its fleet will be reinforced by the imminent return of its Airbus A320 aircraft located in Morocco for maintenance as well as a leased A319 capable of carrying 150 passengers”, tries to reassure Congo Airways.

To whom did Congo Airways lease its A319?

I couldn't find anything on an A319.
But they have this factory-new Embraer E190-E2 (ERJ-190-300 STD) on order:

No info for the moment. Same thing happened with CAA (Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation) few days ago. Their A330 is currently in maintenance and a website said that they will lease an A330 from a Taiwanese airline. But i can"t find the airline https://www.newsaero.info/airlines/rdc- ... ?true=4944

Air Congo, a joint venture with Ethiopian Airlines, expects seven planes before July 2022, including one B787, three B737-800s and three DHC8s.

Meanwhile, Congo Airways is undergoing an in-depth restructuring, with the help of a new interim CEO. The carrier has only one plane left to cover domestic flights, which are experiencing significant disruptions between delays and cancellations.

I wonder why the D R Congo needs to have two state-funded national airlines.

In deed like in Nigeria, where the Nigerian Gov is merging Arik Air and Aero Contractors and they are creating a new airline Nigeria Air

After the non-renewal of the lease of 2 ERJ 190s from Kenya Airways and in full restructuring, Congo Airways plans to cancel its order for E2 and to order A220s. An E2 is already stored in Brazil, awaiting delivery

Congo Airways Considering the Airbus A220 Over Embraer E2 to Expand its Fleet

Congo Airways is on the hunt for new aircraft. With its current fleet comprised of Airbus A320 and Dash 8 turboprop, reports have it that the state-owned carrier may be on the verge of canceling its Embraer E2 order preferring the Airbus A220 aircraft.

Congo Airways is looking to secure leased second-hand aircraft to avoid a temporary halt of operations due to its only two aircraft needing maintenance.

Game over? Congo Airways is bankrupt and could stop its operations at any time, says former DR Congo presidential candidate Noel Chiani Muadiamvita. The carrier recently requested US$92.7 million in government assistance.

Congo Airways financial director, Emile Gilbert Kakese, was imprisoned, having been accused of embezzlement of public funds following an investigation by the General Inspectorate of Finance. Meanwhile. the general manager, Pascal Kasongo Mwema, has disappeared.

What a nice company!

Not about Congo Airways, but another local airline:

Compagnie Africaine d’Aviation (CAA) intends to operate service to South Africa in January 2023, from Kinshasa to Johannesburg via Lubumbashi with A330 and direct flights with A320.

Congo Airways temporarily suspends flights from 11sept2023. The airline hasn't aircraft to fly. They are grounded due tech issues

https://taarifa.rw/congo-airways-suspen ... ty-issues/

Remains only CAA to operate domestic flights, but the airline is also struggling. They have only 3 aircraft.

It's quite pretty sad. People have sometimes to fly from Kinshasa to Addis Ababa or Nairobi to fly then to Goma or Lubumbashi. It was also the case with RwandAir till DR Congo gov decides to suspend RwandAir to serve Kinshasa, Goma and Lubumbashi due to M23 rebeillon.

However some people use to go Brazzaville then to fly to Kigali and take the bus to Goma or the plane to Kamembe to go to Bukavu.

It's a mess, really. Congo has immense resources that it is unable to exploit to the benefit of its population.

However, SN nor AF/KLM can't seem to make a local airline work, albeit both companies having heaps of experience in flying to Africa.
