Re: Strikes affecting Belgian airports

Post by Passenger »

The left wing union ABVV/FGTB (edit - see below) is holding a series of protests against the federal government. Today they're organizing a party in downtown Brussels, and many BRU Swissport employees didn't show up for work this morning. As a result, passengers have to wait more then one hour for their luggage.

Edit : it was not the ABVV/FGTB, but a joined organization by the 2,5 Belgian unions.

Anyone an idea how the upcoming national strike on 22 April will affect air traffic at BRU ?
I should attend a meeting in Leuven on 22/23 April and as the train from Frankfurt via Liege, which I would have preferred in this case, most certainly will not run there would be the option to fly into BRU and than to organize a private shuttle to Leuven. However, if air traffic will likely be affected by the strike as well this is no real alternative ... grateful for any information on this ...

Only the reds will be striking. The greens and the blues should keep working, so there is a chance that the airport operations will continue, albeit with some delays...

Border control police officers at Brussels Airport have started a work-to-rule action. At the moment, the impact of the work-to-rule actions is limited. It’s a busy day as it’s the start of the holidays, so passengers are advised to best arrive at the airport well ahead of their departure time.

Passengers travelling to Schengen countries do not have to pass border control and are not impacted by these work-to-rule actions.

Strikes of French ATC announced on 8 and 9 April, 16 to 19 April, 29 April to 2 May 2015.

The French ATC strike is expected to have a significant impact on air traffic in France on 8 April. DGAC has asked airlines to reduce their flights by 40%.

French ATC strike: DSNA have confirmed they are asking airlines to cancel 50% of flights tomorrow (8 Apr), up from 40% today.

Since 2010 European aviation suffered from no less than 39 ATC strike days in France.

French ATC strike: the positive attitude

This is what Jetairfly does to bring its passengers to their destination without having cancelled any flight (flight duration extended by 75 minutes, additional hours for crew, more fuel and CO2 emissions, etc.):
JAF_ALC.jpg
Other airlines simply cancel their flights...

Other airlines simply dont have enough planes to add 75 min to every flight. Im sure VTM will have another news item about this great JAF news

For instance, from UK, wednesday :
Easyjet has cancelled 118 flights, most of which involve journeys within France, though return services to Paris from Gatwick, Belfast and Luton have been scrapped along with the Gatwick-Tolouse route
Ryanair cancelled 250 flights, with airports affected including Birmingham, Luton, Leeds-Bradford, Stansted, East Midlands and Dublin.
Flybe has cancelled 16 services including flights to Paris from Manchester, Birmingham and Exeter and some flights from Southampton
British Airways has cancelled 24 flights to and from France, but says it has put on larger aircraft to accommodate some of those affected

Several airlines have been forced to cancel flights on Thursday because of a two-day strike by French air traffic controllers.
EasyJet said that it was cancelling 194 flights of which 48 were either leaving or arriving at UK airports while British Airways said it was cancelling 14 flights from London.

You've forgotten one paragraph, very on topic (which is "strikes affecting Belgian airports"):

"...A l'aéroport de Charleroi également, des annulations ont été annoncées pour des vols Ryanair en provenance ou à destination de Montpellier, Carcassonne, Perpignan, Marseille et Figari (Corse)..."

In Charleroi, Ryanair flights to/from Montpellier, Carcassonne, Perpignan, Marseille and Figari (Corsica) have been cancelled.

Budget airline easyJet cancelled 579 flights in total over the last two days.
Low-cost airline Ryanair cancelled just over 500 flights over the last two days.
Air France said 75% of its flights from Orly airport in Paris are cancelled. However, it said it is operating 50% of medium-haul flights to and from Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport. Around 40% of flights to and from cities in the rest of France are also operational. It said long-haul Air France flights were affected on Thursday.

AFP reported that by including all airlines into the cancelled flight tally, around 2,000 flights have been cancelled in total.

Sorry, French only (after all, they are French...), but easy to understand (at least the dates):

Le SNCTA, syndicat national des contrôleurs du trafic aérien, majoritaire dans la profession, appelle à des arrêts de travail sur les périodes suivantes :
du 8 au 9 avril, du 16 au 18 avril et du 29 avril au 2 mai.

easyJet is to be complimented on the way it dealt with last week’s French air traffic control strike, admitting there were problems, and coming out with a bold statement setting out the way the airline was dealing with the complicated situation that arose.

On the Wednesday 8 April easyJet cancelled 248 flights and the following day 331. The airline offered a free of charge transfer to another flight or a refund. easyJet provided hotel accommodation and on the Wednesday booked 3,103 rooms accommodating 6,066 customers. It also laid on five ‘rescue’ flights concerning schoolchildren.
