Australia says stepping up hunt for MH370, confident of search area

Australia will step up search efforts in an area they believe holds the best hope of finding a missing Malaysia Airlines jet, whose disappearance last year sparked one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history, officials said on Thursday (3 Dec 2015).

The number of vessels searching for the jet would be doubled to four, Australian Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said. One of the vessels would be provided by China.

The search has thus far focussed on a 120,000 km² band of sea floor in the remote southern Indian Ocean, where the plane is believed to have gone down.

Truss, flanked by officials from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and Department of Defence, identified an area at the southern tip of that search band that is now believed to be the likeliest resting place of the wreckage.

The area, described by Truss as a "purple patch", had been chosen based on an analysis of the flight data, path and information gleaned from global satellite networks.

Experts involved in past deep-water searches have said the hunt could easily miss the plane because Dutch company Fugro NV was using inappropriate technology and inexperienced personnel for the highly specialised task.

Investigators: Both MH370 engines flamed out; search narrowed

Australian investigators believe both of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370’s engines flamed out, suggesting the Boeing 777-200 was not intentionally ditched. Also, new analysis has narrowed the search area for MH370, giving officials renewed hope of finding the aircraft.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has issued a new report on MH370 based on research and analysis conducted by the Australian Defense Science and Technology Group that confirms the search for the missing 777 is generally being conducted in the right area of the southern Indian Ocean. But it narrows the search area to the southern portion of a search area that spanned 120,000 sq km.

The analysis concludes that after MH370 had been airborne for 7 hours and 38 minutes, “fuel exhaustion was probable,” according to ATSB. “It is likely that the right engine flamed out first followed by the left engine.” ATSB said the left engine “could have continued to run for up to 15 minutes after the right engine flamed out.”

Aircraft debris washed up in Thailand. This video was put online yesterday:

It definately is from an aircraft, and judging by the panel numbers in the 3xx range, it is from the aft tail section. But it is hard to tell. If the numbers are according ATA, they should be followed by two letters, I don't see those... And, it is made of a honeycomb sandwich construction. I do not know the 777, and if there is a large section of this construction on the aft tailcone. Could well be, but the curvature doesn't add up if it is a smaller cross section.

Also, if it is from MH370, it sure is a loooooong way from where they found the flap. Wich is confirmed to be from MH370... Doesn't seem to be very logical for debris to float into two completely different directions.

Correction, Zone 323 is the top section of the vertical stabilizer...
Again, this does not coincide with the curvature of the part recovered.
We'll have to wait and see what investigators make of it.

Are you sure about that? I may be wrong but the heavy hex-bolt heads protruding also from the exterior surface, the honeycomb sandwich, the curvature,... , make me think more about an aerospace structure...

Yeah, I read the news article too, possibly Japanese rocket structure.
Very well possible.
I meant, it was definately not from a boat or something like that, but something that would have taken to the sky. ;-)
Anyway, they expect results in the next couple of days.

Australian authorities searching for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 have lost a deep-water sonar detector being used to scour a patch of the Indian ocean floor where the plane is believed to have gone down almost two years ago.

Image

The main search, using a sonar detector known as a towfish, is focused on a 50,000sq mile sea floor area in the Indian Ocean. That has now run into trouble and the sonar lost, although a second one is being prepared.

Earlier this month the Joint Agency Coordination Centre reiterated it would complete searching the seafloor by the end of June, ruling out a further expansion without new confirmation on the aircraft's location.

The Australian-led underwater search is one of the most expensive ever conducted. With the towfish delay what happens in June, assuming no results, remains to be seen.

Putin did it: MH370 mystery solved with hint from chickens

First published by RT Feb 29, 2016

It was the biggest blow to the Malaysian travel and tourism industry and to aviation. Who is the guilty one? Not Putin, but Kim Jong-un?

Although Wise’s “suspicion fell on Russia” back then, he still “had no idea” as to “why, exactly, would Putin want to steal a Malaysian passenger plane.” Though he hypothesized that “maybe he [Putin] wanted to demonstrate to the United States... that he could hurt the West and its allies anywhere in the world,” or that Russia’s leader could have been after “the secrets of one of the plane’s passengers,” or that he may, rather, have saved the plane so that it could “unexpectedly show up somewhere packed with explosives,” real clarity as to the exact motive behind the mystery still alluded the journalist-sleuth.

Not Putin, but Kim Jong-un

The missing Boeing might have been stolen by North Korea, a number of theorists have suggested. While some have linked the flight’s disappearance to South Korea’s claim that a Chinese passenger plane had nearly been taken down by a North Korean missile just three days ahead of MH370’s last recorded flight, others have theorized that the aircraft was hijacked, rather than shot down, at the order of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who was probably after the American technology it contained.

Tel Aviv stole the plane for Israeli-style 9/11

Another theory suggests that the Mossad was behind MH370’s disappearance, with its agents commandeering the Boeing for insidious purposes. Speculating on reports that two Iranian nationals had been traveling on the flight with forged passports, the blame-Israel camp think the plane has been hidden in a hangar in Tel Aviv, waiting for its time to serve as a bomb, like the planes on September 11 in New York. They further speculate that after the mass terror attack has been carried out, the two Iranian passengers will resurface, thus giving Israel a chance pin the blame on Iran.

American military base in the Indian Ocean is involved

The US military has also been implicated in the MH370 tragedy, with claims that it is somehow linked to Washington’s military base on the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Here opinions are divided: some online researchers claim that the base was used to hide the passenger jet after it was hijacked by Americans, while others say the Malaysian plane was shot down by American fighter jets to prevent it from crashing onto the base after it was hacked.

The post hereabove (of Russian origin) was of course somewhat cynical. Here is something more serious:

Missing MH370 debris possibly belonging to Boeing 777 'found off the coast of Mozambique'
The words 'No Step' on the debris show it could be the tail end of a plane

An object that could be from a Boeing 777 was found on a sandbank off the eastern African country days ahead of the second anniversary of the jet's disappearance in March 2014.

Photographs of the debris have now been seen by investigators in Malaysia, Australia and the US and say there is a good chance it comes from a Boeing 777, according to NBC News.

It has also been found in the same part of the southern Indian Ocean where the only other confirmed piece of debris from the flight, a flaperon, was found on Reunion Island in July 2015.

"NO STEP" is written on the object, which makes it likely it is from the plane's wing-like parts attached to the tail that are called horizontal stabilisers.

Image

Boeing engineers are looking at the photos, according to sources, but the company has declined to comment. It was discovered by an American who has been blogging about the search for MH370.

Until now, about three-quarters of the 46,000 square mile search zone for the Malayasia Airlines Flight has been scoured without success by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).

Several false alarms have occurred during the course of the investigation, including a six-foot-long metal item in the eastern state of Terengganu, and a sonar search which turned up a 19th century shipwreck.

The ATSB has said it knows of the discovery and will be conducting a thorough examination of the object, according to NBS News.

Image
Until now, it had been conducting its searches on the assumption that the aircraft crashed when its fuel ran out after cruising on autopilot as a “ghost flight” with the pilots incapacitated or dead.

Last month, it was claimed investigators are preparing to revive theories that the plane may have been brought down deliberately.

Update Aviation Herald:

On Sep 3rd 2015 the French Prosecutor involved in the examination of the debris washed ashore at Reunion declared that the part, a flaperon of a Boeing 777-200, originated from MH-370 without a doubt, proven by a series number found inside the flaperon.

Two pieces of debris found on the beaches of Mauritius and South Africa are “almost certainly” from missing flight MH370.

Malaysia transport minister Liow Tiong Lai confirmed the new pieces of aircraft were an engine cowling piece with a partial Rolls-Royce logo and an interior panel from an aircraft cabin - the first interior part found.

All the debris is being examined in Australia by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and other experts.

The announcement means a total of five pieces of debris from the Malaysian Airlines’ jet have now been discovered in various spots around the Indian Ocean since it vanished.

The search was supposed to end in June, but will be ongoing until at least August.
Today (19th July) Ministers of Malaysia, Australia and China will meet to make a final decision on the future. Expect this to be the end of the search for MH370:

Statement of the meeting between Australia, China and Malaysia:

"Senior Ministers from Australia, Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China met today in Putrajaya, Malaysia to discuss arrangements in the event Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 is not located.
Malaysian Minister of Transport, Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai, chaired the meeting with the Australian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, the Hon. Darren Chester MP, and the Chinese Minister of Transport, the Hon. Mr. Yang Chuantang.
Ministers took the opportunity to reflect on the enormous sense of grief felt by so many people following the tragic disappearance of MH370 and again acknowledged and expressed their gratitude to the many nations of the world that had provided expertise and other assistance over the subsequent almost two and a half years.
Ministers were provided with an update on the status of the underwater search and the Annex 13 investigation.
Attention was particularly focused on delays to the search as a result of damaged equipment and recent poor weather, as well as discussion about the discovery of aircraft debris and what it meant in relation to search efforts and the investigation
While acknowledging the significance of the debris, Ministers noted that (to) date, none of it had provided information that positively identified the precise location of the aircraft.
With less than 10,000 square kilometres of the high priority search area remaining to be searched, Ministers acknowledged that despite the best efforts of all involved, the likelihood of finding the aircraft is fading.
Ministers agreed that should the aircraft not be located in the current search area, and in the absence of credible new evidence leading to the identification of a specific location of the aircraft, the search would not end, but be suspended upon completion of the 120,000 square kilometre search area.
The suspension does not mean the termination of the search. Ministers reiterated that the aspiration to locate MH370 has not been abandoned. Should credible new information emerge which can be used to identify the specific location of the aircraft, consideration will be given in determining next steps."

Daily Intelligencer / New York reports new evidence that a suicide may be the cause:

"...New York has obtained a confidential document from the Malaysian police investigation into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 that shows that the plane’s captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, conducted a simulated flight deep into the remote southern Indian Ocean less than a month before the plane vanished under uncannily similar circumstances. The revelation, which Malaysia withheld from a lengthy public report on the investigation, is the strongest evidence yet that Zaharie made off with the plane in a premeditated act of mass murder-suicide.

The document presents the findings of the Malaysian police’s investigation into Zaharie. It reveals that after the plane disappeared in March of 2014, Malaysia turned over to the FBI hard drives that Zaharie used to record sessions on an elaborate home-built flight simulator. The FBI was able to recover six deleted data points that had been stored by the Microsoft Flight Simulator X program in the weeks before MH370 disappeared, according to the document. Each point records the airplane’s altitude, speed, direction of flight, and other key parameters at a given moment..."
