Ryanair today in a news/press conference in Athens stated there will be one more aircraft based there. There will be 2 new routes: Rome-Ciampino and Brussels-Charleroi that will be flown. They will start in September. Frequency is not yet known, but I am assuming it will be daily.

In the Ryanair jargon, that means one daily flight CRL-ATH and two daily flights ATH-CIA (and return of course).

Profits down 5% at Charleroi Airport

BSCA, the company managing the airport of Charleroi, closed 2013 with a profit down nearly 5% to 9.59 million. The market share of Ryanair is 82.7%, down 0.4% in favor of Wizzair and Jetairfly.

In 2013, passenger volume rose 4.13% to nearly 6.8 million passengers (6,786,979 passengers) compared to 2012 ( 6,516,427 passengers). At the same time, sales recorded an increase of more than 5%. It stood at nearly 61 million (60,951,284 euros) last year against about 58 million in 2012 (57.946.38 euros). These figures will be presented at the General Assembly of 20 June.

In detail, they indicate that Brussels South Charleroi Airport (BSCA), the company that manages the airport remains in the black figures in 2013. But profits last year were falling to 9,587,970 euros, down 4.93% compared to 2012 (10,085,242 euros). "The decline in earnings was due to higher labor costs and amortization of work done in 2013. There is also the development of pirate parkings which impacted our commercial non-aviation revenues. But we are above what we budgeted in 2013", explained Jean-Jacques Cloquet, Managing Director of BSCA.

Employment up
Indeed, the item "salaries, benefits and pensions" represents an amount of 29,837,908 euros in 2013, an increase of 3.82% compared to 2012 (28,738,923 euros). The annual report states that the company has hired additional staff to cope with the increasing number of passengers. A total of 25 workers were recruited last year, bringing the total staff to 434.57 equivalent full-time employees.

After deduction of various reserves, the company proposes to allocate a 5.761 million dividend distribution to the shareholders. The private shareholder Belgian Airports (SAVE, ex-Holding Communal) should receive a preferential dividend of 1,593,000 and other shareholders (Sowaer, Sogepa, Sambrinvest, Sabca, Igretec) will share an ordinary dividend of 4,168,000. BSCA also reduced its debt, which decreased from 39.6 million in 2012 to about 37,660,000 in 2013.

Market share of Ryanair down
BSCA recognizes to be always dependent on its main customer (Ryanair). But the market share of the low cost airline has dropped a bit: 82.7% in 2013 against 83.1% in 2012. At the same time, Wizzair and Jetairfly saw their market share grow slightly. That of the first rose from 6.3% in 2012 to 6.8% in 2013 and that from the second is 10.2% in 2013 (vs. 10.1% in 2012).

Ryanair's market share is expected to continue decreasing in 2014 thanks to the arrival of the Turkish airline Pegasus Airlines and the launch of activities by Ryanair at Brussels Airport. Although Ryanair has confirmed that Charleroi is its main base in Belgium, BSCA considers through its development in Zaventem Charleroi will lose a total of 600,000 passengers in 2014. It seeks an extension of hours (6-24 instead of 6:30-23 currently) to operate as in other surrounding airports.

No immediately I'm afraid. The route between Newfoundland and Dublin is flown by... Boeing 737! And I guess that a flight between Charleroi and St Johns is not possible with a full 737. But who knows, in future?!

extract :

Charleroi Airport is now too small. It is therefore planned to expand the terminal and, in particular, to increase the number of gates. 30,000 m² are expected to be added in 2018. The estimated cost of the work amounts to 100 million euros.
This should allow the airport to have a terminal for departures and another for arrivals. This should also solve the parking problems.
But before starting any project, the procedure is to conduct a public inquiry among the neighbours. It has been launched this week.
IF IT AIN'T BOEING, I'M NOT GOING.

4You Airlines has thus far sourced three A320-200s from Ukrainian operator, YanAir for charter services. It does not have an own Aircraft Operator Certificate but instead its flights are operated with EuroLOT flight numbers.
