SHANNON Airport is set to overtake Cork as Ryanair’s biggest passenger base in Ireland outside of Dublin.

From April 1 next, Ryanair will double the frequency of its flights to Kaunas in Lithuania, and its year round flight to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.These will rise from once a week to twice a week.

Meanwhile, there will also be increases on services between Shannon and London Gatwick which will revert to seven days a week, having operated six days during the winter period.
The service between Shannon and London Stansted airport will continue to operate twice daily, in the morning and evening.

A number of ‘summer sun’ flights are set to return to the airport, with Palma, Malaga, Tenerife and Fuerteventura set to be connected.

A service to Memmingen will also return for next summer’s season, as will a twice-weekly service to Poitiers in France.

The carrier will also continue its routes to Berlin, Faro, Krakow, Nice, Paris, Warsaw and Wroclaw.

This all means that Ryanair is expecting its passenger numbers in Shannon will top 825,000, an 18% year-on-year growth.

Ryanair statement:
Two of our aircraft were taxiing slowly to the runway at Dublin Airport this morning. The winglet of one aircraft appears to have scraped the tail of the other. Both aircraft were under the instruction of Dublin Airport Air Traffic Control at the time. There was no impact on customers on board and Ryanair contacted the IAA and worked with them to return both aircraft to stand. Affected customers disembarked, were provided with refreshment vouchers and boarded two replacement aircraft, which departed to Brussels Charleroi and Edinburgh later this morning. Ryanair apologises sincerely to customers for any inconvenience. Both aircraft are being repaired by Ryanair engineers and will be returned to service shortly.

Its seems a little easy to blame Dublin ATC...

Having spent more than two decades at the helm of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary seems to have finally learned that being less abrasive can have its benefits.
Efforts to woo more passengers by introducing allocated seating, flexible tickets and revamping its website saw the budget airline recently raise its full-year profit guidance, and more details on the outlook should emerge with next month’s interim results.
“As I say somewhat tongue in cheek, if I’d known that being nicer to customers was going to work so well on the business side, I’d have been nicer to ­customers years ago,” says O’Leary on a, er, flying visit to Edinburgh.

O’Leary was in town to take part in an Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce breakfast event, held the morning after Virgin Atlantic announced that it was pulling the plug on its Little Red domestic offshoot, which only launched last year. Services from Heathrow to ­Aberdeen and Edinburgh will end in September, but Ryanair was quick to capitalise on its rival’s demise – “no more Virgins in Scotland”, O’Leary says.
He adds: “I talked to Edinburgh Airport last night and we’re going to increase our frequencies from three flights daily to five flights daily in the autumn of 2015. This is an immediate response to Little Red stopping their flights, which means we’ll keep the capacity up and the prices down.”
Ryanair will not be going to Heathrow, instead choosing to serve London Stansted from Edinburgh and Glasgow International when the routes start towards the end of this month.

O’Leary has been chief executive of Ryanair since 1994, but when asked whether he has been tempted to take a seat in the cockpit, he replies: “Jesus no. I can barely drive a car. I’ve no interest in flying and never had. One of the great problems with the airline industry is that too many bosses are former pilots. It would be better off if they were former accountants.

RYANAIR EYES MOSTAR FLIGHTS (AND ITS PILGRIMS?)


Ryanair could soon launch flights to Mostar in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina following talks between the airline and local authorities earlier this week. Ryanair’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Luis Fernandez Mellado, said the no frills carrier is currently expanding its network and fleet and is considering up to forty different destinations in Europe, among which is Mostar. “We are the leading airline in Europe. We have developed many small and regional European airports and there is no obstacle for us to do the same in Mostar”, Mr. Fernandez Mellado said. He added that Ryanair’s only condition is for flights to the city to be profitable. Over the next two to three months the low cost airline will make a final decision on whether it will add Mostar to its route network, following additional talks with authorities.

Mostar Airport and local authorities are confident the city will soon be served by Europe’s busiest airline. Marko Djuzel, head of Traffic and Security at Mostar Airport, said, "Our goal is to link Mostar Airport with European hubs in Germany, Austria or Scandinavia where our passengers can transit and continue their journey further on". Ljubo Bešlić, the Mayor of Mostar, and Denis Lasić, the Prime Minister of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, are certain that a common interest will be found between the two sides in order for the flights to be launched. “We agreed today to consider all the information we have exchanged and prepare for our next meeting in two weeks”, Mayor Bešlić, said. The Prime Minister added, “Now is the time to prepare and plan our budget for the coming year. I think that sufficient funds will be found in the budget for these flights and they will become operational”.

Last year, the Federal government of Bosnia and Herzegovina designated both Mostar and Tuzla airports as the country’s low cost hubs. Since then, Wizz Air has launched services to Tuzla and plans to open a base there next summer. Meanwhile, Mostar has struggled to attract scheduled flights but sees a significant number of charters throughout the year, carrying religious pilgrims visiting the nearby Medjugorje sight. Back in 2012 Mostar Airport held talks with Wizz Air over potential flights from Dortmund and Malmo, however, the airline opted for Tuzla instead. Ryanair has a limited presence in the former Yugoslavia. Besides a seasonal summer base in Zadar, the no frills carrier also flies to Rijeka, Osijek and Pula in Croatia as well as Podgorica in Montenegro. In 2007 Ryanair launched flights to Maribor, however, the service was cancelled due to poor loads after only a few months.

Not in that article: Groningen Airport and Maastricht Airport pay the bill for the expansion into Amsterdam. Ryanair will end all flights to/from Groningen Airport Eelde and will cut half its flights to/from Maastricht Airport.

Ryanair’s chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs, speaking at The Drum's Joy of CX event in London, said: “Myself and the chief executive [Michael O’Leary] sat down and looked at what we wanted to do, wrote a page on each, and then just got on with it,” adding it has been the leanest and "most straightforward" approach to business change he has seen in his career, which spans Moneysupermarket.com and Tesco.

“We haven’t been paralysed by consultants who end up going through a 200 page document of what we need to change and we haven’t been bogged down with change management programmes. We’ve really just gotten on with it and that’s the best way to do it,” he added.

Jacobs also suggested this has impacted how quickly its employees across Europe have embraced the changes, saying they want to see leadership in the business “cracking on”.

Interesting news! The Azores are a beautiful place, and there is lot of potential for tourism. It would also be good news for the Azorians, as the fares from the Azores to the Continent are not really cheap!

However, the weather is very changing, and diversions are common there! Sometimes passengers get stuck on another island for days as planes cannot take-off / land... and even ships cannot sail due to rough seas.

When you fly to the Azores, expect the unexpected, and don't plan a too tight timetable

Already Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers, selling over 80 million tickets last year, Ryanair is targeting 50 percent growth in passengers by 2019.

"A lot of the growth is going to be relatively unspectacular in appearance, but spectacular in size," said Ryanair's David O'Brien, who is in charge of doing deals with airports to add to the airline's 1,600 routes.

The focus over the next year is to give business travellers many more short-haul routes with at least two flights a day and more planes going to capital cities, while the number of domestic routes will increase significantly."That is quite boring and low key, but that is where the real opportunity in growth is to come from," O'Brien said.

Ryanair estimates that around 20 million of its 83 million annual passengers are business travellers and aims to increase that number to between 30 million and 36 million.

Ryanair intends to focus on "old reliables" like the United Kingdom, Poland, Italy and Germany, specifically on short, high-frequency routes, many of them domestic.

Ryanair ordered to repay €320'000 in illegal state aid to Germany

Ryanair has been directed to repay EUR318'569 to the German treasury after a European Commission investigation into agreements between Flugplatz Altenburg-Nobitz GmbH, the operator of Altenburg Airport, and the Irish budget carrier were found to constitute illegal state aid.

Situated on the former military airfield of Altenburg in the Thuringia region in the former East Germany, Altenburg-Nobitz airport has never served more than 150 000 passengers per year. Between 1 May 2003 and 31 March 2011, Ryanair was the only airline operating scheduled flights from the airport. No scheduled flights have operated from the airport since.

The EC said in a statement that although it had cleared 2003 and 2008 airport service and marketing agreements concluded between Flugplatz Altenburg-Nobitz GmbH and Ryanair as having been done under market terms and therefore not violating the bloc's regulations governing state financial assistance, the same could not be said for a later marketing agreement signed in 2010.

Ryanair has said it will appeal the ruling.
