Fourth MRJ aircraft joins flight test program

The fourth Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. MRJ90 flight test aircraft made its first flight in Japan Nov. 22.

According to Mitsubishi Aircraft, the aircraft flew for 2 hours and 4 minutes after taking off from Nagoya Airfield at 10:18 a.m. local time.

Two MRJ90 flight test aircraft have already been transferred to the US, where Mitsubishi Aircraft is conducting the majority of flight testing toward the regional jet’s certification. Two more MRJ90s are expected to be transferred to Mitsubishi Aircraft’s US flight testing base at Grant County International Airport in Moses Lake, Washington, by the end of 2016.

Fifth delay in Mitsubishi jet delivery -- it's official, almost
Group chief speaks of challenges facing Japan's first homegrown jet

TOKYO -- Work on the first homegrown Japanese commercial jetliner has suffered a series of setbacks, with delivery certain to be delayed a fifth time.

Shunichi Miyanaga, president of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, recently told media outlets including The Nikkei that the group "is carefully reviewing the delivery time" for the Mitsubishi Regional Jet under development by group member Mitsubishi Aircraft. His remark effectively confirmed yet another delay.

"I'll be able to talk about the results of the review in January," Miyanaga said.

The MRJ is supposed to be delivered in mid-2018. The focus is now on whether this time frame needs revision. The Mitsubishi group has been carrying out test flights to obtain a type certificate from the transport ministry.

Miyanaga also talked about the government's decision to scrap the Monju prototype fast breeder nuclear reactor. Japan nevertheless plans to continue work on such reactors, and Miyanaga expressed a desire for his company to play a key role in developing them and related technologies.

"My understanding is that effort will continue to go into core technologies," Miyanaga said, adding that "we will grow technologies that do not pale in comparison" to others in the world.

Under Miyanaga, Mitsubishi Heavy is trying to bring a sharper focus to operations. "We have to do a lot more" when it comes to mergers and acquisitions, he said.

Mitsubishi Aircraft to need to produce additional MRJ90 flight test aircraft to gain certification, a consequence of systems revisions that have caused the latest two-year program delay.

Mitsubishi Grounds MRJs Following In-flight Engine Failure

Mitsubishi has grounded its fleet of four U.S.-based MRJ flight-test airplanes following the uncommanded shutdown of FTA-2’s left Pratt & Whitney PW1200G geared turbofan while flying near Portland, Oregon, on August 21, the airframer confirmed Thursday. The airplane, flying out of Grant County Airport in Moses Lake, Washington, diverted to land at Portland International Airport “without incident,” according to a Pratt & Whitney spokesman. The engine company immediately sent a team of specialists to the site to examine the engine and assist Mitsubishi personnel with the investigation.

The Japan Times: "...Kobe Steel Ltd. said Sunday inspection data was fabricated on some of its aluminum and copper products shipped to about 200 companies and the systematic misconduct started 10 years ago at factories. While Kobe Steel did not disclose the names of the companies affected, aluminum products supplied with fabricated data were found to have been used in vehicles made by Toyota Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Regional Jet passenger planes, which are currently being developed by a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. Kobe Steel said inspection data, such as on the strength of the products, were rewritten when customer specifications were not met..."

Mitsubishi Aircraft forecasts more MRJ orders in 2018 due to a cyclical upturn in the market, shrugging off the impact of January 2018 cancellation of an order for the long-delayed commercial aircraft.

Mitsubishi plans to add two aircraft to the flight-test programme to verify design changes prompted by a reassessment of certification requirements in late 2016. This will bring the flight-test fleet to seven aircraft, with the two additional units good candidates for later sales to customers.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries aircraft unit’s negative net worth more than doubled to US$993.9 million at the end of March 2018, weighed down by ballooning development costs for its passenger jet. Mitsubishi Heavy plans to revamp the struggling unit with a capital increase.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries plans to release a smaller version of its MRJ in 2022, as the standard 90-seat MRJ is expected to be less profitable than anticipated. The parent company is also considering providing extra funds to Mitsubishi Aircraft to develop the MRJ70. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries may also ask for help from Toyota, Mitsubishi, Development Bank of Japan and other firms that have invested in Mitsubishi Aircraft.

Mitsubishi Aircraft issues a statement rejecting the lawsuit filed by Bombardier against the company alleging that Mitsubishi Aircraft hired employees from Bombardier to acquire trade secrets. Whom to believe?

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is arranging US$2 billion in financial support for its aircraft unit, which has struggled to deliver the MRJ. MHI is considering ways to resolve excess liabilities at the unit, but no decisions have been made yet.

Mitsubishi Aircraft received Type Inspection Authorization from the Japanese CAA for the company’s MRJ programme, thus allowing Mitsubishi to begin certification flight tests for its MRJ 90. The company expects to begin certification flight testing early in 2019 at Moses Lake.

In other news, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries says a trade secrets lawsuit brought by Bombardier* should be dismissed because the allegations are baseless and designed to “disrupt development” of the MRJ.

Mitsubishi Aircraft will change the name of its MRJ to “Space Jet”, as it looks to shed any negative images due to repeated delays.
