Re: 2013 Charleroi airport (CRL/EBCI) latest news
If I'm not wrong, CLR were in the process to extend the runway. The expectation supporting this project would be to allow medium/long haul flights or bigger aircrafts.
Anybody able to give informations about this (long) procedure ? I suspect that's gonna be like at LGG.
Long, long process with a lot of road blocs and gimmicks (political , neibours actions, other airports and budget restrictions.)

I'm not so sure abou that, the locals dont really seem to mind the airport with it's current opening times. I guess they learned not to bite the hand that feeds.

Ecolo is blocking the request for two years now in Namur(wal govt).

Yes... pretty sad politics, as usual.crlhub wrote:Ecolo is blocking the request for two years now in Namur(wal govt).
I would understand if that famous new runway would have a negative impact on the environment... but it's not the case at all, quite the contrary. Using a longer runway would optimize the performance of all the current aircrafts flying out of CRL. Noise pollution would be reduced. But do they really care? I don't think so.
Re: 2013 Charleroi airport (CRL/EBCI) latest news
Wouldn't be bad if they lenghten the strip.. But apart from that I do not see any new infrastructural changes?

I'am not sure that Ecolo are fully responsible for the delay. In fact, in order to short cut the legal (and long process), the Gouvernement Wallon have taken a "decret" call DAR (Décret d'application régional). This decret is suppose to give the Parlement the possibility to reduce (and overcome) usual hurdels.
But récently, the DAR vas invalideted by the Conseil d'ETAT...so back to square one. Kafka is still alive

About the expansion plans, is it really possible to extend the runway?
The 07 has the displaced threshold which i'm guessing is there because of obstacles so they can't move it.
On the other side there is a little place to expand the runway but a taxiway to the runway will be another story. To the north they are bounded by the graveyard and to the south with the P3.
I'm thinking that P3 can be moved easily (maybe across the street from P1 and 2? But what about the graveyard? And how close is the easterly expansion of the apron coming to the graveyard? If i look on Google maps i see that if you add 3 stand there is only a few meters left in between.

I suppose you mean the westerly expansion of Apron 1?
If not and you are talking about a suggestive easterly expansion of the runways + the aprons. Then I would say it's a no go. I honestly cannot see any runway being expanded except for 20 on the 02 side (railway side), because they could put a bridge over the railway and build the runway right over it. But then again that would be quite expensive.

Where do you see a railway around CRL ? the nearest tracks are at Courcelles on the west, Fleurus on the east.
As regards runway extension, there are roads just at the western end : E420, RN5, chaussée de Bruxelles.
The only possible runway extension is at the east; it would involve relocating the ILS; a taxiway to the end of the runway would have to cross the graveyard - but many airports don't have taxiways right to the end of the runway (Luton, for example, for many years, perhaps still now).

Re: 2013 Charleroi airport (CRL/EBCI) latest news
The bus shuttle to Brussels Midi is presently run by a private company (L'Elan).
An "airport fee" is paid by each passenger (for instance, on a 22 euros return trip, the airport fee amounts to 6,4 euros), and the total for the airport is 3 million euros per year.
The TEC would like to take over the line and pocket that sum.
The problem is that the Jumet TEC "base" (nearest to the airport) is competing each year with the other TEC bases as to which one will have the more days of strike (wildcat strikes, much more fun) - and often wins the contest, beating even Dampremy, which is no mean feat.
If the TEC wins, there will be an added suspense for the CRL passengers to/from Brussels : will Jumet be on strike today, or not ?
