Farewell to AA at BRU on 06NOV12

Post by skumfiduse »

Hi all!

Tomorrow, 06 November 2012, the Silverbird will touch down at BRU for the very last time. A sad occasion, though not to be missed by former AA-employees and avgeeks.

With former employees we meet at 0900 at check-in row 9 where we hopefully can meet some ex-colleagues. Thereafter we'll go to Wingtips to wave the Silverbird goodbye. We're not allowed to go airside as one need a badge for that, of course.

Hi,

very sad indeed,
good for SN, bad for us .. was a lovely sight that silverbird ( but even this scheme won't last any longer .. )..
had hoped for some other routes by them but nothing in the near future..
will need to fly them from LHR, as their fares are very frequent the most attractive ones..

Lex, I thought you would have organised an AvGeek trip on this last flight ;)

Sad to see them go, really liked their c/s. Flew them 9 times in 2004 and 2006 from/to BRU. I really liked their service in that time, although I can't compare with recent years. Hopefully they'll come back in a couple of years.

Andre,

It's BRUssels AIRlines AVGeeks , as the name was given by a SN employee..
so I can't deal with this one..
maybe in the future I will expand to a historical plane-flight and/or JAF's 787.. as also an important belgian player ..

But : don't worry.. I would loved to have this organised also.. but could you please talk to my wife first then LOL !!

The article forgets to mention that Brussels has once been a hub for American, where passengers could change flights between the ORD-BRU-DUS and the JFK-BRU-MUC flights. Those were really the days of glory for AA in BRU.

Greetings,
OK guess they are also picking up some AA pax.
They also use A 767 on their BRU-ATL route if I'm not wrong...

DL was already back to 767 quite some time before 9W and AA stoped operating JFK-BRU. But indeed, it's normal that they also get a part of the pax.
ATL is also 767 indeed, but for the first time in a long time, downgraded to 5 weekly this winter (as they did with many routes).

Any pictures of AA's last flight at BRU already?

While the 757 isn't the most comfortable plane to fly transatlantic on, they will be missed: they were part of the line up of BRU in the morning.

Pity to see them go. I took AA from BRU on my second trip to the states. Flew them to JFK and then onwards with American Eagle to Washington DCA. I remember that Sabena was still advertised in JFK as a code share partner. That was in 2005.

Nice ultimate pictures of AA in Brussels. Thanks, hvs89!

No water cannon salute for this last trip?

I've seen two fire trucks coming back from pier B shortly before the take off of the AA, so probably ;)

On BRU's blog:
… but for some this was also a very sad day. During the Summer, American Airlines decided to stop flying directly to and from @brusselsairport. Today, November 6, election day was the very last day of their operations at our airport. The Boeing 757 was baptized before it took to the skies. A ceremony we normally reserve for new airlines only, but after (1 up to 3) daily flights for more than 23 years, this was goodbye to good friends. This picture was not made from our office window, but from gate B5, where the aircraft was boarding its final flight. When we finally saw it take off on RWY 07L, there was a tear at many eyes. Many folks at American Airlines have worked for the airline since the early days in 1989. Skilled and professonal airport colleagues. We hope their experience will help them find a new challenge with other airlines or elsewhere at the airport, soon. As for the big silver birds of American, we all felt the same in our hearts: this can only be a goodbye, not a farewell.
