US airlines won't pay carbon tax

Post by airazurxtror »

The US Senate unanimously passed a bill on Saturday that would shield U.S. airlines from paying for their carbon emissions on European flights, pressuring the European Union to back down from applying its emissions law to foreign carriers.
The European Commission has been enforcing its law since January to make all airlines take part in its Emissions Trading Scheme to combat global warming, prompting threats of a trade fight.
Republican Senator John Thune, a sponsor of the measure, said it sent a "strong message" to the EU that it cannot impose taxes on the United States.

Fair enough. Now traffic rights of US carriers should be temporarily suspended.

AA123: "Brussels Delivery, AA123, stand XYZ, request start-up clearance"
BXL TWR: "AA123, confirm carbon tax deposited"
AA123: "Negative sir, John Tune sent a 'strong message' to the EU, AA123"
BXL TWR: "Too bad John Tune does not have the authority to approve your flight plan..." :D

If European airlines pay the tax and US don't then competition is distorted. US should learn they cannot impose unilaterally their will to the rest of the world.

you mean the EU should learn that they can't impose taxes on the rest of the world no?
its not only the US that rejects those stupid taxes.

@teddybAIR, obviously because you drive on their roads.
how can you compare air with some road that has been build?

A country is the owner of the airspace above and the soil underneath. So they can tax anyone to use the airspace above their territory. As they can forbid any plane to enter their owned airspace (see blacklist). It was an international agreement not to tax, but it doesn't mean they can't.

I think one of the problems US has is that the tax is not only for EU airspace but for the whole trip in and out EU airspace

Indeed. Quote of the day: "Americans shouldn't be forced to pay a European tax when flying in U.S. airspace "

No they want those Americans to pay an American tax instead. If they would pay the EU tax, then the USA would have a harder time making them pay another one.

EU sees progress on UN airline emissions deal

The European Union welcomed on Friday progress made by the U.N.'s civil aviation body (ICAO) toward a global deal to cut carbon emissions from the sector, raising hopes that the bloc may stand down from applying its controversial law that forces all airlines to pay for their pollution.

EU Commission freezes EU carbon emissions law for non-EU airlines

* EU member states will have to endorse Commission plan
* EU airlines will still have comply with EU ETS scheme
* Non-EU airlines get breathing space till Nov. 2013

The European Union will put on hold its rule that all airlines must pay for their emissions on flights to and from Europe, but will resume enforcement if ICAO fails to deliver a global deal.

will the EU airlines still have to pay it now? just for intra-EU flights or for all of their flights?
In case of the latter, it will form yet another competitive disadvantage to the EU intercontinental airlines, in case it isn't, i bet there are quite a few of them which will suddenly be able to book significantly better results as they had already budgetted a certain amount of money to pay for these emission rights.

All airlines flying intercontinental routes to/from Europe will be exempt, at least until November 2013, in the hope that by that date ICAO will come up with a global scheme. However, European airlines flying within Europe will continue to pay the tax.

For equity reasons, international airlines flying intra-European segments should be submitted to the tax when transporting intra-European passengers.

Airbus is happy, and so is IATA. Lufthansa however complains (rightly) that intra-European feeder flights submitted to the tax will cause a competitive disadvantage versus airlines flying directly to/from Europe.

That's how I'd handle it.
