New twist in 737 MAX saga: American Airlines has threatened to cancel some of its orders for the troubled jet. Back in 2011, American's push for a new fuel-efficient narrow-body jet prompted Boeing to develop the MAX in the first place.

American Airlines told Boeing it will not take delivery of 17 B737 MAX aeroplanes unless it can secure financing to pay for the aircraft. Boeing Capital will look to arrange financing or may end up leasing the planes to American.

Boeing is scrambling to shore up financing for the B737 MAX as it awaits regulatory approval for design changes after the plane was grounded following two fatal crashes.

Actually, it's not only Boing who can offer the financing. Leasing companies shift their focus towards sale-leaseback transactions in order to make some money. This resulted in BOC financing 10 Max8 for Southwest with delivery 2020-2021. Though this resulted in BOC cancelling 30 Max, it's a win-win for Boeing, the airline and the leasing company. AA probably will not be leasing from external leasing companies given its credit rating, but others may do so.

Southwest Airlines and American Airlines say they are still committed to the B737 MAX despite delays in its return to flight and the pandemic, though the head of Southwest said contracts need to be “completely reset.”

Spirit Aerosystems told lenders that the aircraft manufacturer expects sharply lower deliveries of B737 MAX planes in the coming years than previously expected. In 2022, B737 deliveries were projected at fewer than 400 planes,

American Airlines expects the B737 MAX to begin flying in its network from December 2020.

Ryanair Holdings plans to accept delivery of its first B737 MAX 200 before the end of 2020 and potentially up to 40 MAXs ahead of summer 2021. Discussions are ongoing with aircraft suppliers to reduce aircraft lease rates and purchase prices to reflect the new reality.
