Farnborough 2012: latest news and orders

Post by sn26567 »

The Farnborough Air Show 2012 has started today (Monday 9 July), and the traditional game between Boeing and Airbus about who is gloing to record the most sales as well. Le Bourget is traditionally considered as the Airbus show, whereas Farnborough is more a Boeing thing.

Airbus recorded a first: a sale to an Israeli company. Due to the support of the US to Israeli politics, Boeing had some kind of monopoly in the country. Now Airbus managed to sell 4 A321NEOs to Arkia: a big success, even if the number is small (more information: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47777 ).

Airbus also announced an enhanced A330 that will have 400nm extra range and a 240t MTOW (more information: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47779).

The A380 was the star of the opening day of the Farnborough International Airshow today, with a special visit from UK Prime Minister David Cameron. Mr Cameron visited Malaysia Airlines’ (MAS) second Airbus A380, which is on display at the show Monday through Wednesday.

Boeing on its side recorded a first large order: Air Lease ordered 75 Boeing 737 Max aircraft (60 MAX 8 and 15 MAX 9), plus an option for 25 more (more information: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47778 ).

United is rumoured to purchase 100 Boeing aircraft. We'll hear more about it later I guess.

Boeing also annouved that it is 'more committed than ever' to the future 787-10X and 777X.

The smaller manufacturers are not forgotten. Embraer announced an order from China’s Hebei Airlines for five E-190s (more information: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47782 ).

More news to follow. See the press releases in our official news and press releases section: https://www.aviation24.be/news

Cathay becomes first to commit to modified A350-1000

Post by Squelsh »

Airbus’s decision last year to modify the A350-1000’s design began to pay dividends Tuesday at the Farnborough Airshow when Cathay Pacific Airways (CX) agreed to order 10 of the type, valued at $3.2 billion, plus convert 16 of its existing -900 orders to -1000 models.

All told, CX has 46 A350s on order from Airbus, comprising 16 -900s to begin delivering in 2016 and 26 -1000s to begin delivering in 2018. CX CEO John Slosar said all of the A350 orders will imminently be firmed after the airline’s board gives its expected approval. The carrier became the first to sign up for the modified A350-1000 powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.

“It was always in our mind that we’d be interested in the -1000 model, which features a bit higher takeoff weight and range [than the -900],” Slosar said. “As a Hong Kong-based long-haul operator, the efficiency of long-haul [aircraft] is very important to us.”

At last year’s Paris Air Show, Airbus COO-customers John Leahy revealed the manufacturer and Rolls had decided to upgrade the A350’s design and performance metrics in an effort to overcome “softness” in sales of the largest version of the A350 (ATW Daily News,June 20, 2011). Rolls’ modified Trent XWB will deliver 97,000 lbs. maximum thrust, providing 600 mi. more range than the original A350-1000 design, according to Airbus.

“It’s a much better airplane than we had before and it’s a much better airplane than the competition [Boeing 777-300ER],” Leahy said at a Tuesday news conference. “At one point, Cathay looked at the lower thrust version and decided, no, we want the new version.” Airbus president and CEO Fabrice Bregier added that the manufacturer “listened to customers,” including CX on preferences for the A350-1000.

“We certainly are not shy about making our needs known,” Slosar said, adding the three main criteria were passenger comfort, environmental efficiency and operating economics.

FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom, July 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) announced today at the Farnborough International Airshow a commitment by GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), the commercial aircraft leasing and financing arm of General Electric (NYSE: GE), to purchase 75 737 MAX 8s and 25 Next-Generation 737-800s. The commitment builds on the momentum for the 737 MAX.

FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom, July 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Kuwait airplane leasing company ALAFCO today announced a commitment at the 2012 Farnborough Airshow for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 8s valued at $1.9 billion at current list prices.

Boeing looks forward to finalizing the agreements, at which time the orders will be posted to the Boeing Orders & Deliveries website.

Airbus says its planes are much better than the competition, and Boeing says exactly the same. In my view, it just means that they have the same performance. Today Boeing has revealed the basic data about the future 737 MAX: The 737 MAX models will have the capability to fly more than 3,500 nautical miles (6,482 km), an increase of 400 – 540 nmi (741-1,000 km) over the Next-Generation 737. In addition, depending on the model, the 737 MAX will have a MTOW increased by 5000 to 7000 lbs (more information and picture: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47790).

"These efficiencies translate into an eight percent per-seat operating cost advantage for the 737 MAX 8 over the A320 neo." How can they say that, when none of these aircraft has gone further than the drawing board?

Back to sales (and commitments, MoUs, etc.):

Today, Tuesday, second day of the Air Show, is another successful day for Boeing: As mentioned in the above azurxtror, GECAS has made a commitment for 100 B737s (75 737 MAX 8 and 35 737-800 NG - more information and picture: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47788) and ALAFCO a commitment for 20 737 MAX (more information and picture: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47789).

OK, a commitment is not a sale, but usually commitments are confirmed a few months later. Aircraft manufacturers are pushing potential buyers to make commitments at the Air Shows (Le Bourget and Farnborough) for prestige, just to show how strong they are...

On the Airbus side, just one sale (a firm one, noy a commitment): an A319 with sharklets to Bhutan's Drukair, the confirmation of a former MoU (more information and picture: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47786).

Besides that, Cathay Pacific has selected the A350-1000, as stated in the previous post by Squelsh (agreement to order 10 new A350-1000 and conversion of an order of 16 A350-900 to the A350-1000 model) (more information and picture: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47787).

On a lighter side, Airbus has launched the Space-Flex lavatory (for persons with reduced mobility) as option on the Airbus A320 Family aircraft. TAM Airlines is the first airline to get Space-Flex.

More seriously, leasing company BOC Aviation is buying 8 A330-200s from IAG (British Airways and Iberia) and leasing them back to these airlines. BOC Aviation is also leasing three new E190s to Air Astana. Embraer also records another successful sale: the Indonesian Air Force signs for a second batch of 8 A-29 Super Tucanos. The weapons integration for these Super Tucanos will be provided by Boeing.

And also some initial news from Bombardier: Riga (Latvia)-based Air Baltic has signed a letter of intent (LOI) to acquire 10 CS300 aircraft and take purchase rights on a further 10 CS300 jetliners (more information an picture: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47792). AirAsia is also in talks with Bombardier for 160-seat CSeries, up from 130 or 145 seats.

Bad news for Sukhoi: after the recent crash, Armavia refused to purchase the second Superjet. Some solace though, Interjet has firmed its previous option for five SSJ100s, bringing its total firm orders to 20.

On Wednesday 11 July, third day of the Show, Airbus seemed to regain some clout:

China Aircraft Leasing Company (CALC) signed a MoU for 36 current generation A320 family aircraft. The deal includes eight A321 and operators will be able to select Airbus’ new sharklets (more information and picture: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47808)

CIT Group announced a firm order for 10 A330 family aircraft. This deal includes five A330s ordered previously and a new agreement for five additional A330s, with the first commitment for the newly launched, longer-range A330 with increased take-off weight limits. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2014 (more information and picture: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47809).

But Boeing was not forgotten:

Avolon announced a commitment to purchase 30 737 family aircraft: 10 737 MAX 8s and 5 737 MAX 9s, as well as 10 737-800s and reconfirmation rights for five 737 MAX aircraft. The 737-800 aircraft are scheduled for delivery from 2015 onwards, the 737 MAX aircraft from 2018 onwards (more information and picture: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47812).

Among the smaller aircraft manufacturers, ATR made many sales:

TransAsia Airways announced the signature of a contract for eight firm ATR 72-600s, plus an option for one additional ATR 72-600. Deliveries will start in 2014. TransAsia Airways will progressively replace its current fleet of nine ATR 72-500s with the newest ATR -600 series aircraft configured with 72 seats (details and picture: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47814).

Air Lease Corporation (ALC) signed a contract converting two of 10 options for ATR 72-600s into firm orders. These options were taken as part of an order agreement between ATR and ALC booked in 2010. With the purchase of these two aircraft, ALC will increase its total fleet of ATR 72-600s to 14 (more information and picture: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47816).

Lao signed for two ATR72-600s (more information: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47815)

Nordic Aviation Capital bought its first ATR 42-600. With over 100 ATR aircraft in their portfolio NAC is the largest ATR aircraft owner in the world (more information: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=47817)

But the big news concerns Mitsubishi:

SkyWest and Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation stated they have reached an agreement in principle in anticipation of completing a firm order for 100 Mitsubishi Regional Jets (MRJ), for delivery commencing in 2017. Mitsubishi Aircraft and SkyWest intend to continue their efforts to transform the agreement in principle into a definitive agreement in the coming weeks. MRJ had previously received 130 aircraft orders including 25 (15 firm, 10 option) from All Nippon Airways, 100 (50 firm, 50 option) from Trans States Holdings and five (all firm) from ANI Group Holdings.

Based on the airframers' orders pages and the new orders for Airbus (they'll announce their new orders page in August, they do it monthly and not weekly like Boeing):

Boeing:
- 737: 669 orders, 5 were canceled => 664 net orders
- 747: /
- 767: 19 orders => 19 net orders
- 777: 15 orders, 6 were canceled => 9 net orders
- 787: 24 orders, 25 were canceled (of which 24 by China Eastern that changed their order to 45 737's) => -1 net orders
Total = 691 net orders
They also had 145 MoU's for the 737 at Farnborough but these have to be firmed up yet, in total Boeing says they now have 1.200 commitments and firm orders for the 737 MAX, from 18 customers.

Airbus:
- A318: 2 orders, 1 was canceled => 1 net order
- A319: 32 orders => 32 net orders
- A320: 189 orders => 189 net orders
- A321: 4 orders => 4 net orders
- A332: 7 order, 1 was cancelled => 6 net orders
- A332F: 5 orders, 8 were canceled => -3 net orders
- A333: 13 orders => 13 net orders
- A330 (no exact type given during Farnborough): 5 orders => 5 net orders
- A358: /
- A359: 6 orders, 6 were canceled => 0 net orders
- A351: 0 orders, 7 were canceled => -7 net orders
- A380: 4 orders => 4 net orders
Total = 244 net orders
They also had 96 MoU's at Farnborough that still have to firmed up, mostly for A320NEO, but also 10 for A350-1000 (from Cathay, they also plan to convert 16 of their A359 orders).

For the first time in a long period Boeing is on their way to 'win' the order battle of this year. But that was already predicted by Airbus itself (because their NEO orders slow down because of the lack of early delivery slots and the 737MAX orders are comming up). Boeing is also slightly above Airbus in the amount of deliveries (Boeing delivers more widebodies thanks to the 747 and 787, but Airbus delivers more A320's than Boeing delivers 737's) but that can still change as in June Airbus was slightly above Boeing again.
Airbus said late in 2011 they would try to sell 30 A380's this year, but last week they said they probably wouldn't succeed in that. Boeing says for months they see new 748 orders comming, but so far still nothing. Turkish Airlines, Cathay Pacific and United Airlines are 3 big airlines that announced that they are evaluating the A380 and 748i (Cathay did this already several years ago, but they said they'll do it again because they can now see reall operating performances of their 748F's), decisions would come this year or in 2013.

United Airlines already has the 737-900ER inherited from CO, they also had some orders left for it (of course convertable to all 737NG versions). Partly because of that more -900ER's and the MAX9 is just the most logical choice as 757-200 replacement on the domestic market.
We can still expect a split order to replace the older 737's and A320's.

And United was not pro airbus tough CO was pro Boeing. United just bought what was best for them. The A32S proofed the best replacement of their 737's several years ago. For their long haul plans the 787 was part of the solution, as well as the larger A359 (so a split order).
As bigger the airline, as bigger the chance that they'll order from both airframers to get their aircraft fast enough (when you order 200-300 aircraft from two different airframers you will get them much faster than when you order them from just one airframer). See American and Norwegian. But of course they're not all like that (like Lion Air with Boeing and AirAsia with Airbus). If you know that, I see a big chance that UA will order the A320NEO eventually, next to more 737MAX. And probably they'll order more 787's eventually, next to more A350's. For the biggest aircraft tough it will be either 748 or A380, not both.

No i'm talking about the audit from fleet planning for replacing the 757's and oldest 737 and A320's
the A320NEO series came out best.
