Airbus A380 news

Post by sn26567 »

Since there are already threads about several new Boeing aeroplanes (thanks MR_Boeing), I thought it would be interesting to have similar threads on Airbus developments. After the A350, here is the thread devoted to the largest commercial aeroplane, the A380.

Airbus confirms a 'temporary' slowdown in A380 production rate to 2.3 units per month, until the problem of microcracks in the wings is resolved; but Airbus maintains targets of 30 deliveries in 2012 and breakeven in early 2015.

Qantas delays two early 2013 A380 deliveries to 2016/17, and the final six to 2018/19 to help cut capital spending.

Meanwhile, the Qantas A380 that suffered damage in Singapore after Rolls Royce Trent engine problems is back into service after repairs amounting to 140 million dollars. A hefty bill for Rolls Royce!

A very hefty bill since Qantas didn't pay much more per plane... AFAIK did Qantas only pay about 150 million USD per frame (compared to the listprice at time of signing the order nearly a 50% discount which is quite normal). This is ofcourse without the engines which have a list price of about 13 million USD a piece (Qantas rents the engines (by the hour) from Rolls Royce). Normally the plane would be a write off (from an economy point of view) but since Qantas is very proud about the fact they never lost a jet it had to be repaired. Lucky for them it was Rolls Royce (their insurance at least) who picked up the tap.

The Airbus A380 made its Indonesian debut today, as a Singapore Airlines jet from Sydney made a medical emergency diversion to Jakarta.

Qatar Airways May Delay A380 Deliveries Pending Wing Fix

Qatar Airways Monday said it won't take delivery of five A380 super jumbos until the airline knows plane-maker Airbus has a permanent fix for faults in the aircraft's wings. Qatar says Airbus has pledged to provide definitive solution to wing problems.

The Middle East airline's outspoken chief executive Akbar Al Baker said he still has reservations about the manufacturer's plans for a stretched version of its new A350 jetliner (the A350-1000), casting a shadow over the future Airbus' latest products, but he has no plans yet to cancel A350-1000 orders.

Airbus still believe in their A380, according to John Leahy, commercial manager.
No A380 sale has been recorded since last november - but my aim is to sell 30 A380 this year; it will be difficult, we'll see where we are at the end of the year, he says.

"The starkness of the situation has been demonstrated most recently by Air Austral, which over the northern winter will reduce its long-haul network to a single destination and will postpone – or possibly cancel – its order for two Airbus A380s, following it being unable to pay for a new Boeing 777 awaiting delivery."

Air Austral has announced that it will cancel its order for two A380-800s originally placed in 2009. It had planned to use the aircraft in a full Economy Class configuration with 840 seats which would have allowed it to have a significant cost per seat advantage over its competitors between Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and St. Denis de la Réunion Roland Garros (RUN).

Source: ch-aviation

Some sources say that Air Austral would not be able to pay for the A380s, since it is already late in the payment for two just-acquired Boeing 777 aircraft.

Therefore, the most densely configured A380s will be operated by Transaero from Russia.

Today Malaysia Airlines (MAS) took delivery of ots first Airbus A380 and so became the 8th operator of the worlds largest passenger aircraft.

The AvGeeks who visited the A380 assembly hall in Toulouse on 31 March will remember having seen this aircraft on the parking in front of the hall.

Malaysia's A380 will start operating flights between Kuala Lumpur and London Heathrow in July.

Airbus expects a drop in A380 deliveries next year

Airbus expects a drop in deliveries of its A380 in 2013 as it introduces a fix to recent wing cracks. EADS has maintained a forecast for 30 A380 deliveries in 2012 but faces reluctance among some customers to take aircraft with an interim wing repair that it has devised until a definitive solution becomes available in 2014.

Qatar Airways has said it would rather wait until the all-new aircraft is available rather than have to return the double-decker for final repairs once it has already entered service.

EADS is progressively taking charges for the A380 cracks but a drop in deliveries would add a cash impact as airlines pay for most of the jet at delivery. Airbus expects to have European safety authority approval for its proposed solution to the cracked rib feet or brackets inside the A380's wings within weeks.

Singapore Airlines To Celebrate A380's Fifth Anniversary With Delivery Flight Contest

Singapore Airlines has launched a contest for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be on the delivery flight of SIA’s 19th Airbus A380 from Toulouse, France in early September.

The winner of the lucky draw and a guest of his or her choosing will be flown to Airbus’ headquarters in Toulouse from any point in the SIA network. In Toulouse, the pair will enjoy two nights’ accommodation, a half-day tour of the city, and dinners hosted by SIA and Airbus. They will also be treated to an exclusive tour of Airbus’ production centre, before boarding the superjumbo aircraft for its delivery flight to Singapore.[1]

Being on a delivery flight is a unique experience usually restricted to a small number of cabin and technical crew, as well as a handful of other SIA staff involved in accepting the aircraft. The operational nature of the flight means service is limited, but its exclusive nature offers a sneak peek into the real workings of the airline industry.

To qualify for the draw, contestants are required to own a passport on SIAJourneys.com. Those who currently do not have an existing passport may create one on the microsite. The contest ends on 28 August 2012 and the winner will be chosen from those with valid passports. More details are available on SIAJourneys.com.

SIA currently operates 18 A380s and was the first to operate the world’s largest commercial aircraft in October 2007. The Airline’s 19th A380 is due for delivery on 6 September 2012.

As the first airline to fly the A380, it is only fitting that we find a special way to mark its fifth anniversary. What better way than to offer an exclusive glimpse into the production and delivery process, followed by a chance to travel on the delivery flight,” said SIA’s Executive Vice-President Commercial, Mr Mak Swee Wah.

Over the past five years, our A380 fleet has grown to become the mainstay on our high-traffic, long-haul routes linking key hubs around the world. The aircraft continues to be a customer favourite, featuring our latest award-winning cabin products.”

SIA was the First to Fly the A380 in 2007, with an inaugural flight to Sydney on 25 October 2007. Today, the Airline operates the superjumbo to ten destinations across its network, including Sydney, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris, Zurich, and Frankfurt.

16 August 2012 - Singapore Airlines

[1] SIA will fly both the winner and guest back to their originating SIA destination after the delivery flight.
