Helicopter crash in Huy kills two

Post by sn26567 »

A helicopter based at Namur airport at Suarlée, flying at low altitude in Huy (prov. of Liège), got caught in the cables of the local telecabin and crashed this Friday afternoon. The telecabin is also in danger of falling, but there is nobody on board. The pilot of the helicopter and his passenger, a photographer, both died.

The helico burning in a small park in the city center ...

said to be a Robinson 22, pilot J-Y Dantinne (ex-Belgian Army helicopter pilot).

Il s’agit du pilote Jean-Yves Dantinne et du photographe hutois Laurent Matagne. Ce dernier souhaitait réaliser des prises de vue aériennes de la ville. C’est pour cette raison que l’engin volait à si basse altitude.

I flew with the pilot on a number of pipeline inspection flights. Being a former BAF Agusta 109 pilot/instructor, he was often flying on the edge and taking (calculated?) risks. I once ordered him to return to the airport because I didn't want to fly with him anymore.
Unfortunately the last risk he took got him killed...

In this case, should you not report to the police? Seriously. :geek:
I have acquintances who died in the Cavalese murder ( I cannot give it another name , sorry ) where several of my mates died because a recless pilot liked to fly under cable car cables.
If these pilots should have been stopped in time, those fatalities would not have happened.
I don't mean you should have reported him before. I mean I think ( personally ) that in the view of the investigation, it is normal that you report your experience with this pilot to the concerned agency. It is than up to them to see what they do with your report.
( interesting stuff for the insurance company ! )
Sad news for the relatives and friends of this pilots. But aviation is an activity with very little room for mistakes.
And reporting your experience is not anti aviation: it could improve the general safety to avoid dangerous behaviour.
