A Nationale Regionale Transport Embraer EMB-120, registration ZS-PYO (MSN: 120245) performing a charter flight from Libreville to Port Gentil (Gabon) carrying a Gabonese minister and delegation, was on approach to Port Gentil when the crew reported an unsafe indication for the nose gear and aborted the approach. Following troubleshooting the aircraft landed on Port Gentil's runway 21 at about 08:00L (07:00Z) but overran the runway end and came to a stop with the nose gear intact, both main gear struts bent backwards causing the engines to "pitch down" together with the wings. Emergency services were able to prevent an outbreak of fire, a number of people received injuries, the aircraft sustained substantial damage.

Indeed : NRT Gabon is banned in the European Union : just like almost all other carriers from Gabon. Only 3 Gabon carriers are allowed here, with additional restriction to a/c type: Gabon Airlines is only allowed to fly to EU with TR-LHP 762; Afrijet with their Falcon 50 and Falcon 900 to EU and finally Nouvelle Air Affaires Gabon/SN2AG with TR-AAG and ZS-AFG (CL-601 and HS-125-800).

So indeed: also this crash-landed ER-120 is (was) banned in Europe.

ZS-PYO is (was) a wetlease from Allegiance Air South Africa. So eventually, NRT Gabon could have asked the European Union for an unbanning of this wetleased South African aircraft. But given the fact that it is (was) highly unlikely (*) that they would ever fly with this ER-120 to Europe, they haven't asked for clearance.

Allegiance Air:

EU-Blacklist:

highly unlikely (*) : some will indeed say that it is possible to fly with turboprops from Gabon to Brussels...

Based upon the initial press release from Embraer released just after it happened, it was seen as an incident. But as soon as the real damage was established, it has been "upgraded" from incident to accident.

Says who? It's so obvious that this was an accident that it's useless to discuss this.

"Substantial damage" is an accident, says the FAA:

Aircraft accident means an occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft which takes place between the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight and all such persons have disembarked, and in which any person suffers death or serious injury, or in which the aircraft receives substantial damage. For purposes of this part, the definition of “aircraft accident” includes “unmanned aircraft accident,” as defined herein.

Fatal injury means any injury which results in death within 30 days of the accident.

Incident means an occurrence other than an accident, associated with the operation of an aircraft, which affects or could affect the safety of operations.

If you would inform yourself before posting a reaction, you wouldn't have to post stupid questions. I've seen three photo's from the aircraft. A wing almost ripped off and pointing towards the ground is substantial damage for me. Thus accident.
