Whats really going on is the -900 is slipping, the engineering resources on the -800 will be diverted (like the 787-3 consideration for canceling it). The -1000 never did get close to final, too many big players want it to compete with the 77-300ER (or at least on range if not pax).
To keep the delays to the best selling -900 as limited as possible, they are throwing all the resources at it. How well they succeed depends on how solid the program is. Like the 787, we will not know until it starts to oooze or pour out.
Reality says at least a year, more likely 1.5 to 2 years late.
Happy Boeing as they can catch back up if the 787 finally makes it through certification and starts getting delivered.
Also allows Boeing to do the 737 (engine or replacement) and slip decision and resources to 777 upgrade to the right.
As they are struggling to even come close to the 777-300ER, I suspect Boeing can just do a wing and an engine and maybe stretch it a bit and be golden.
