SAS announces fleet renewal

Post by sn26567 »

Scandinavian Airlines is to phase out its older MD80 and Boeing 737 Classic aircraft, replacing them with leased A320 and next-generation B737s.

In a release the carrier said that it has signed an agreement to lease five new B737-800 aircraft from GECAS, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding to lease 12 B737-700s.

In addition SAS says it will replace its MD80 fleet with Airbus A320 aircraft between 2012 and 2016. The carrier's president and CEO Rickard Gustafson said that the fleet renewal would "reduce complexity and improve our environmental performance".

SAS has earlier communicated the decision to phase out the MD80 and Boeing 737 Classic on the bases in Stockholm and Oslo and replace them with Boeing 737 NG (New Generation). In line with SAS strategy to streamline its fleet, a decision has been made to also phase out MD80 in its Copenhagen base and replace it with Airbus A320. The replacement will start in 2012 and is expected to be completed by 2016. SAS today operates 29 Short haul jets in Copenhagen, 12 A320 and 17 MD80s.

SAS President & CEO Rickard Gustafson comments. "We are very pleased that we now can continue the process of renewing our fleet. This will reduce complexity and improve our environmental performance."

Strange idea to "streamline" the fleet by using simultaneously Boeing and Airbus aircraft !

So Oslo and stockholm will get all B737 - 700 and 800

Copenhagen gets all A320

This leads to a simple maintenance structure in their main hubs because of similar type jets stationed at each respective hub.

They have 28 B736's wich are something like 11-13 years old (and yes the -600 is NG) so I doubt they will replace them in the comming years. It's a big fleet, and not so old, so I don't see the need for SAS to make such a big investment in the comming years. First the MD's and B737 classic.

BTW, doesn't operate the -600 also flights out of Stockholm?

My mistake, I just wanted to make clear that (in my eyes) a split between B and A whas likely to be a split over the main stationed fleet in a given hub. I didn meant to exclude other types of aircraft. Also I geuss that all 73XNG are quite matching in parts used. So a 600, 700 or 800 isnt that much of a diversification parts whise.

So 2 hubs will have Boeing, 1 will have Airbus. Flights between hubs will see a mix in type of aircraft depending on the hub in which the plane that flies the route is stationed.

Disclaimer:

This is just the thinking of an 'armchair CEO' on info given on this forum and does not include future fleet renewal plans with other type of aircraft ohter than B736, B737, B738 or A320. It also doesn't mean that other aircraft types other than '73X Classics or MD80' will be replaced will be replaced by 73XNG or A320.

Hope it's clear this way
