2011 Charleroi Airport (CRL) latest news
2010: 5.195.372 pax (+32%!)
Re: 2010 Charleroi Airport (CRL) latest news
5,19 million passengers in 2010!
An increase of 32% compared to 2009
Brussels South Charleroi Airport has closed 2010 with a new record in its number of passengers. In total, 5,195,372 passengers made use of the airport compared to 3,937,187 passengers in 2009; an increase of 32%!
Despite unforeseen circumstances affecting air travel in 2010, such as volcanic eruptions, air traffic controllers on strike and the heavy snowfall in December, the airport has managed to cater for over 5 million passengers. With this result, the BSCA has entered into a new category of airports like the airports of Nice, Alicante and Cancun.
The development of Brussels South Charleroi never stops. Jetairfly, started eight routes in 2010 (Algiers, Al Hoceima, Fez, Heraklion, Istanbul, Rhodes, Tangier and Toulon) and has already announced another one to Athens for the summer of 2011. Ryanair opened 14 routes in 2010 and has announced three new destinations for the summer of 2011: Perugia, Pescara and Volos. From March 2011, Wizz Air starts its new route to Belgrade and will increase its flight frequency to Prague.
Jean-Jacques Cloquet, CEO of BSCA, is thrilled:
"2010 was characterized by many new destinations at BSCA. 22 routes were launched and 5 new destinations have already been announced for 2011. We have achieved a remarkable result that has been made possible through the sheer hard work and full commitment of all our employees. For 2011 we expect a controlled growth in passenger numbers so we can continue to guarantee maximum comfort. We have started the first phase of construction works to extend the terminal, so from the summer of 2011 onwards, four additional gates will be operational. This will allow the airport better control of its growth and a solid basis for a more sustainable and responsible development of the airport in the future. "

The development of Brussels South Charleroi never stops.
Wonderful.
But that development entirely rests on Ryanair.
The recent example of Girona, who very nearly lost it, should inspire some caution to BSCA.
Who can say for sure that Ryanair won't go to Brussels as it just did to Barcelona ?

Re: 2010 Charleroi Airport (CRL) latest news
it rests primarily on ryanair, but jetairfly and wizz are also present and developing agreed at a much slower pace. I'm quite sure that Ryanair has shown the potential for the market. If they leave, traffic will decrease, but others will with time compensate.

A slowdown or a decrease can happen. But a catastrophy is unlikely.

Ryanair has shown that there is a market at CRL for low-fares flights.Megaman wrote: I'm quite sure that Ryanair has shown the potential for the market. If they leave, traffic will decrease, but others will with time compensate.
If Ryanair leave, other airlines might come in, agreed - but at what prices ?
There is a market at CRL at Ryanair fares, that does not mean that there is a market for higher fares ...
And what other company can match the fares offered by Ryanair ? (16 euros all included for a return trip to Dublin or Bergamo, for instance).

I'm not sure what you mean - they flew to Greece last year from Milan, Franfurt, Pisa and Rome.sn26567 wrote:First Ryanair flight to Greece from any base.
This year Volos gains new (completley new ones and not just seasonal) routes: Brussels and Rome.
Rhodes got a new Rome route in December 2010.
Thessaloniki is a completley new destination on the Ryanair network. Routes will be to: Brussels, London-Stansted, Oslo Rygge and Stockholm Skavsta - all bases.
Re: 2011 Charleroi Airport (CRL) latest news
You are right. I was misled by a press release announcing Ryanair's first UK route to Greece.

Re: 2011 Charleroi Airport (CRL) latest news
Thesalonika,
Volos,
Santiago de compostella
Kos
Lamezia
Athens
Belgrade
These are 7 new destinations for 2011 right?
Do those comprise the 5 that management announced (see top of the thread) at the beginning of the year?
Probably more to come... Extend that runway already and make room for Longhaul...

There are new routes, but also less flights on some old routes : for instance Stockholm, Girona, Dublin have less daily flights than before.Acid-drop wrote:seriously
