Accident Airbus A340 of Turkish Airlines @ Brussels Airport - engine cowls damaged

Post by SABENATH »

This morning during landing, the left engine of the A343 flight TK1937 hit the runway.
It seems to be a reverse problem.
A/C is now parked at Satellite.

incident with A340 THY this morning

Post by willyt »

I was on the flight THY IST-BRU this morning.
Coming from DXB we had to change plane in IST. A very nice A340 with very good business class seats.

We could follow the landing on our private seat screen (plane camera) and just after landing we could follow that it went wrong and a incident (accident) was going to happen.
I am not a specialist so I can only reflect what I think that happened : I suppose the speed continued to be to high and the plane jumped (bumped) over the runway. Suddenly I think the pilot tried to exit the landing strip at a to high speed and we could follow "live" that things were going wrong and we would end at a high speed beside the landing strip (not a comfortable feeling).... Any how the pilots did succeed to get control over the situation ,and we ended really at the end what was the emergency strip.

I am not a specialist , but I suppose we must be happy that the pilots were able to save the situation.I suppose these incidents are not exceptional, but I can testify that after being FT for a long time ist was quit an experience

Most likely because of a reserve plane is being sent out of Istanbul to pick up the stranded pax ?

Strange story. Sounds like a pod strike and no autospoiler deployment thereafter resulting in limited brake effectiveness. Lack of spoilerdeployment can result in the aircraft 'bouncing' across the runway as witnessed by willyt. Asymmetric use of reverse may also cause the aircraft to 'swerve'. Dunno if the 340 is certified for asymmetric use of reverse.

Weather appeared quite reasonable for runways 25 in the morning:

New here and not specialist.

I also saw the accident.
The plane remained pulled up longer than forecasted. At the time of the reverse (the nose wheel had not yet touched the ground and remained very high) I then saw the right wing raised like being turned over.
It was frightening for me.

New and not specialist.

It happened at the 25L rwy.

I also saw it from a very good spot and binocular.

The plane remained pulled up longer than expected. The plane reverse when the nose wheel was still very high.
Then I saw the right wing raised and I expected the plane turn over.

It was frightening.

I saw it happen, I must say that our hearts stopt beating for a few seconds (I was not alone). It looked very scary and believe me, it was not normal. I guess the pilots were lucky and/or capable persons. The A340 was under control when it was at approximately half RWY 25L (abeam exit C3) and vacated at the end. The left engine pod struck the runway surface slightly, leaving some pieces on the runway. This was known only when the aircraft was parked at his gate. The runway was closed afterwards for a short while. At least 3 American pilots and 1 'British Airways' pilot (all 4 of them passengers of the A340) made a complain about the landing. I wonder whether I will hear anything else about it.

Thanks for the update. So, a little crosswind then, but normally nothing out of the ordinary.

Are you sure ? I was by accident following the plane this morning on the casper tracker and it seemed that it did land on 25L.

Small article about the incident on 'de redactie':
Op de luchthaven van Zaventem is er vanmorgen een incident geweest met een vliegtuig van Turkish Airlines. Het vliegtuig maakte een bruuske landing en daarbij raakte een van de motoren het asfalt van de landingsbaan. Volgens enkele passagiers was er heel even paniek. Niemand raakte gewond.

Not that much information. It says that both the engine and runway got damaged. The runway is already back in use at the moment, so it probably suffered minor damage.
