Apparently, from an insider source working for Airbus, Cathay Pacific has 12 A380 on order. Won't be delivered before 2012.
This is due to the fact that Boeing is not planning to produce a lot of B747-8 pax version.
And this makes sense when you see CX operating 2 flights out of Paris 1h appart, or 3 flight from LHR each 2 hours appart.

Re: CX orders A380
If this is confirmed it is a further blow to the B747-8i i.e. the passenger version. It becomes a no brainer to see that Airbus and Boeing will be sharing the VLA market between the A380 for pax and the B747 for freight.
Wonder if Lufthansa didn't expect this all along and has actually positioned itself to highly benefit from a program cancellation that would give them the upper hand in negotiating a deal on anything Boeing has to offer.
The A380 in CX colors will sure be one hell of a bird, and I'd then expect to see repeat orders or upgrades of this order for longer range or higher capacity variants.

Re: CX orders A380
A bit surprised to see any orders during such an economic downturn, but it's good that CX ordered the beast, and quite surely enough the A350 is a better plane for them than the 787 it would seem, at least judging by what they have at the moment.
Re: CX orders A380
Not too surprising given that the deliveries are for 2012. Hopefully the economic downturn won't last that long...CX wrote:A bit surprised to see any orders during such an economic downturn.

it would be much appreciated that more information about the "insider" who released this piece of explosive information. Even indication whether it is a verbal or written one can help to determine the validity...

INTERVIEW-Cathay Pacific to wait on next-generation planes
Tue Oct 30, 2007 4:37pm EDT
That article is over a year old, maybe they have changed their minds and have decided to go for the A380 after all.
Things/plans do change, maybe now they have seen it in full revenue operation they have decided it's a plane for them.
Re: CX orders A380
This is seriously bogus. An unnamed inside source and zero confirmation by the watchers of such events.
And to add a badly worded phrase that "Boeing is not planning on production many 747-8I". Just what does that mean? Boeing will produce all that anyone is willing to buy.
Could Boeing cancel the -8I? Its possible, but at this point the answer is no.

Re: CX orders A380
Without any written or verbal evidence to support, I think the title "CX orders A380" is just a rumor at the very most. I personally spoke with CX CEO a couple of months ago on the subject and it seems A380 is something very very very distant for CX...

Re: CX orders A380
Well I personally spoke with a CX chief pilot, and HE told me this story, a few days ago. Of course it might still be a rumour.
Anyway, best thing is to wait until they officially announce they are either buying 747-8I or A380.
But I heard about an order for 12 A380.
I might repeat myself, but it makes sense to me.

Re: CX orders A380
They can change their minds... The 744s will need to be replaced some time, and with their volume i don't think 773ERs can do everything, while if you look at SIA, there don't seem to be a point to get 748s over A380s, unless they made a mistake.
I think it's likely they'll get their hands on some A350s sooner or later before all the slots fills up, for example some of their A333s, A343s and 772s, 773s are really aging, so the A380 can go together in a big deal? Of course nothing stops them from going 787/748, but A350/A380 looks more sensible to replace their aging equipment with now.
Also looking at the way they rennovated/upgraded the 744s interior, some airlines (like QF) does it the expenisve way to some of their planes by upgrading everything - seats, entertainment, floor, toilets, ceiling (overhead lugguage), lighting, while i think what CX did is just changed the seats, floor and entertainment system, and other small mods.. i mean, if they want to last another 10 years or so with their 744s, they would really do it the expenisve way.. just a thought..
