Virgin Atlantic In Talks Over 10 Long-haul Planes

Post by TallDutch »

Virgin Atlantic is considering acquiring 10 long-haul aircraft to enter service around 2012, a spokesman said on Thursday.

"Virgin Atlantic is in talks with Boeing and Airbus about ordering next-generation fuel-efficient aircraft to operate Virgin Atlantic services from (London) Gatwick Airport," he said.

"The order could potentially be for 10 aircraft which could be 747-8s or A380s," he added. "These would enter service around the time of the Olympics in 2012. Virgin Atlantic will take a decision by May next year."

In April Virgin placed an order for 15 of Boeing's new carbon-composite 787 Dreamliner jets worth around USD$2.8 billion to be mostly based at London's Heathrow Airport.

Virgin already has six A380s on order from 2013.

Virgin Atlantic would probably take more A380's.

Strange given they deferrred delivery of their first batch of A380's. Also strange - did they not say they were not looking at 4 engined planes any more? Even more strange, given the 'green' BS they spun with the 787 that they would go for a 748 or 380 at all now.

Methinks they have been usurped by the BA order of 380's and the fact that SIA are seemingly so exited by theirs that they are havnign to act....

VA deferred their current deliveries to 2013, well past the required date alluded to by Branson, so that rules out A380's and with his perpencity toward twins now, that would make his choices A330's or 777's.
There are no strangers in the world, just friends we have yet to meet.

His cheapest solution has to be the A380's on order and on option as he was a launch customer and would have got a good price.

With his purchasing clout, I am sure he can if necessary re-schedule his current order.

The A380 is a game changer, like the 787. These two planes will boost the industry.
